If you can buy a 3 bed detached house in a countryside area (not on an estate) for £450K or less near good or outstanding secondary schools, where do you live? and would you recommend your location?

@spookycookies I think you may live near me!

@Emma2021

Type in 'land of the living dead' in google and the towns and cities named in it you'll get a castle for that money.
My Google results for this aren't bringing up any lists of towns and cities, just websites about the George Romero Night of the Living Dead films. What should it find?

Yorkshire , delighted here that people are put off by BD postcode and our lovely town near the moors and easy trains nice schools great community is priced well
You'd get 4 bed with nice garden for £450 no problem

KingdomScrolls · 28/04/2021 07:48

Parts of rural Suffolk, you wouldn't be too far to visit family either. My PIL live in a lovely village, local pub, summer fete, music festival in the square, Christmas village panto etc

Jesus, you could buy my 5 bedroom detached house and still have nearly 50k left if you moved to Lancashire. We’re in the countryside and DS attends a top Grammar school having attended an outstanding primary school.

wonderstuff · 28/04/2021 08:12

Hampshire, but it wouldn't be period, could get one on a new build estate in a village near country and outstanding schools. I'd not limit yourself to what OFSTED claim is outstanding. The 'good' school I work at have got better results over the last few years than most of the 'outstanding' schools in the county. Outstanding schools don't get regular inspections so stay outstanding for years and years.

steppemum · 28/04/2021 08:15

@DancesWithDaffodils

Seriously? Most of the country I'd have thought.
exactly.

I started to think of places around me, and there were literally so many I couldn't list.

I live in Wiltshire, and know Gloucestershire quite well, both considered to be expensive, but there are certainly plenty of places you could get a 3-bed for under 450

8dpwoah · 28/04/2021 08:19

Lots of the West Midlands-thread here a few weeks ago about buying four bed on similar budget) 'where to live in Birmingham' I think it was called but covered Worcestershire, Warwickshire and other surrounding areas too. Three beds makes it a lot more doable I think.

8dpwoah · 28/04/2021 08:19

Few days ago 🤦

steppemum · 28/04/2021 08:19

example for you.
Secondary in Marlborough has good reputation

thatched cottage

Babdoc · 28/04/2021 08:26

The south east really is a different country, isn’t it! Nobody pays those mad prices elsewhere. With the obvious exception of Edinburgh.
OP, you can have a large 4 bed in perfect condition with a good sized garden and double garage, for £220,000 in my part of Scotland, just an hour from Edinburgh. And it’s not a wasteland- we have theatres, concert halls, shopping, and superb countryside - (mountains and coast) within a short drive.

YetGo · 28/04/2021 08:29

There was a similar thread a few weeks ago where the OP wanted 4 beds and didn't care about schools for same budget. Went on for pages and pages.

steppemum · 28/04/2021 08:31

That last one is near Salisbury. It is well worth a look
