Salad. Can't eat it. Anyone else?

As above, really ^
I was born in the 70s into a poor family. Salad wasn't really a "thing" to eat even at school.
Obviously, I know that salad is good for me. And not many calories (I'm trying to lose weight...) but...I just hate it.
I don't enjoy eating it and - as I've aged - I don't seem to be able to digest it properly 🤮
It makes me feel quite sick.
I've tried to make salads more interesting - flavoured oils, herbs, radishes, peppers, homemade coleslaw etc
Even sliced skillet cooked nectarines!
Nothing makes it more palatable to me.
Am I the only one? :(

No I hate it too. I try and try with it but it’s just rank. I can eat lettuce but that’s it.

tiredanddangerous · 27/04/2021 20:17

I eat it as a vehicle for dressing really. Love a nice fattening dressing. Salad tastes of nothing without it.

bonfireheart · 27/04/2021 20:17

I probably have a salad most days, a mix of greens, couscous, houmous, olive, sundries tomatoes, artichokes, rocket, chickpeas, fresh cucumber, so many options!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one!
(But sorry you hate it too)

i think you should define what you mean by "salad".... if you mean lettuce, cucumber and tomato type salad, then dont eat it.

anything that's shoved in a bowl with other things can be called salad... try calling these dishes something else, then you might like it...

my bro-in law didnt like stew but enjoyed casserole... doh... same food just cooked in a different dish..

its all in the head

Zandra123 · 27/04/2021 20:18

I'm exactly the same my diet is awful but it's not as easy as to say just eat it. In the 70s I remember my mum putting sugar on cereal and even sliced oranges for me. My teeth hav3 suffered for that!

FindingMeno · 27/04/2021 20:18

Have you tried the mixed baby leaves like kale, spinach, chard and lambs lettuce?
Much more interesting than iceberg.
Also I find chopping the cucumber/ tomato/ pepper into bite size pieces, rather than big slabs of cucumber, for example, much more appealing.
Feta, croutons, onion, sweetcorn, grated carrots, grapes, olives are all things you can add for variety.

Jenthefredo · 27/04/2021 20:18

I think I just need to accept I don't like it and it doesn't agree with me but it feels like a bit of an adulting fail 😅

Not a fan of most leaves if that's the part you're referring to but love all the other components - cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, cheese, beans, olives etc. Dressings definitely make the meal worth eating!

DisgruntledPelican · 27/04/2021 20:19

Salad can be a huge range of ingredients and meals. Tired and browning iceberg lettuce and soggy tomatoes is what I imagine a 1970s/1980s salad was like - how about chopped chicken, hard boiled eggs, spinach, cherry tomatoes, red onion, cucumber and sweetcorn, dressed with good quality olive oil, black pepper and fresh herbs? Much better.

GravityFalls · 27/04/2021 20:20

I’m not really into salad. I eat it a lot because it’s good for you, and I like most of the “ingredients” individually but even a mixed salad with lots of interesting stuff in it doesn’t spark much joy in me. It’s just cold and kind of monotonous. DP loves them and would have salad for every meal. I’d rather have cooked vegetables or pickles.

Jenthefredo · 27/04/2021 20:22

Yep tried most of those...
I'm allergic to cheese so that's a no no sadly
Don't eat carrot either but will have a go at most other veg/salad stuff
Not super keen on olives but can eat them if I have to
I usually eat salad leaves with egg or ham as a protein source which helps.
I just find it all so meh..I'm also starting to struggle with onions which is sad as I love them 😢

Have you gone really simple? Lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, spring onions with a bit of oil, some vinegar ,salt and pepper. Mix it all together and have as a side with chicken, chips etc.

Then if you get used to the taste and texture of it you can build up on it.

I have very particular tastes and I find the more elaborate the dressing and ingredients the less likely I am to like it because it's just "not right".

Egghead68 · 27/04/2021 20:25

Do you like pasta salad? Potato salad?

Jenthefredo · 27/04/2021 20:26

I don't even enjoy it with chips
(I know I know...)

OP posts:
H1978 · 27/04/2021 20:27

I don’t mind salad as a side with a meal but not as a meal in itself.

Jenthefredo · 27/04/2021 20:27

I love potato salad (which is just new potatoes, mayo and chives)
Not that fussed on pasta but can eat it with pesto

OP posts:
sunflowersandbuttercups · 27/04/2021 20:29

I can't eat it either - the texture makes me gag. I can eat raw veggies and such, but not leaves of any kind.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 27/04/2021 20:29

@Jenthefredo

I don't even enjoy it with chips (I know I know...)
Meh I'm fussy as fuck. Seriously not judging.

The only other two types of salad I enjoy are not even healthy. Loads of potatoes or mayo(even if it's home made). Grin

Oh or plain tomato and onion salad (with some oil and salt) and cheese. But cheese is a no go for you.

Jenthefredo · 27/04/2021 20:32

I just feel a bit...silly 😁
Dh has a salad every day for lunch.
I blame my 70s upbringing! My tastes are rather plain/basic I think.
I sometimes feel like I'm going to choke on the leaves. Weird.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 27/04/2021 20:32

I don't like salad, I do like steamed veg though so if I want to eat a healthier quick lunch I Chuck a load of green beans, sugar snap peas, asparagus, mushrooms, baby sweetcorn and whatever else I have into a microwaveable bowl with a dribble of water, cover it and blitz for 3 minutes.

Serve it with cold deli meat or cheese chunks, a knob of butter or salad dressing, or whatever you'd usually have with salad and it does the same job but tastes better.

pinkgin85 · 27/04/2021 20:33

Try adding chickpea and avocado, some pickled jalapeño? Chopped chicken? I love making different combos!

ILoveShula · 27/04/2021 20:35

I absolutely love salad but not all salad.
Dressings ruin it.

Try different types of lettuce. There are lots of different ones and a crunchy romaine is quite the opposite of a soft butterleaf lettuce. Watercress and rocket have a punchy taste, spinach milder.

I love chips too but not with salad.

If you don't like salad, eat more veg that you do like instead.

toocold54 · 27/04/2021 20:36

I love salad but I hate preparing it.
To make a decent one it takes a long time and then doesn’t seem to last very long so I can’t make a large one for the rest of the week.

Do you like cooked vegetables?
