Salad. Can't eat it. Anyone else?

As above, really ^
I was born in the 70s into a poor family. Salad wasn't really a "thing" to eat even at school.
Obviously, I know that salad is good for me. And not many calories (I'm trying to lose weight...) but...I just hate it.
I don't enjoy eating it and - as I've aged - I don't seem to be able to digest it properly 🤮
It makes me feel quite sick.
I've tried to make salads more interesting - flavoured oils, herbs, radishes, peppers, homemade coleslaw etc
Even sliced skillet cooked nectarines!
Nothing makes it more palatable to me.
Am I the only one? :(

I like one that is broccoli and cashew nut salad. I recall it having red onion and a mayo/cider vinegar dressing.

DisgruntledPelican · 27/04/2021 20:37

I sometimes feel like I'm going to choke on the leaves. Weird.

Not weird, leaves are not nice! Stop eating them! A salad doesn’t need to have lettuce leaves. It’s just a mix of foods.

sonicshoegazes · 27/04/2021 20:37

@Jenthefredo

I just feel a bit...silly 😁 Dh has a salad every day for lunch. I blame my 70s upbringing! My tastes are rather plain/basic I think. I sometimes feel like I'm going to choke on the leaves. Weird.
I just wondered if you have had your gallbladder checked? I loved lettuce and onion but it made me feel sick and very bloated. I've had my gallbladder out now and I can eat salad again without all the side effects.

Surely it depends on the ingredients?

Can you expand on the tastes on maybe the textures you don’t like and we can try to suggest alternatives? Do you prefer warm vegetables perhaps?

So what green/red/yellow (or orange) do you like or most dislike?

Stormwhale · 27/04/2021 20:38

You don't have to eat salad to lose weight. Cooked veg will have the same nutritional value. Pretty much all veg tastes better roasted, so big trays of onion, peppers, courgette, beetroot, carrots, drizzled with olive oil and generously seasoned with salt, pepper, herbs etc. Or roasted cauliflower is gorgeous, so is broccoli apparently, but I havent tried that.

Or how about soup? You can pack just as much veg into a tasty soup as you can a salad.

Jenthefredo · 27/04/2021 20:38

I think that's good advice!!
I like avocado with eggs
I might try the steamed veg instead of salad 👍

PoTheDog · 27/04/2021 20:41

Try a Thai noodle salad? Completely different set of textures and flavours, but still full of veg.

Puttheneedleontheraquet · 27/04/2021 20:41

Mayonnaise is your friend in this situation!

I live in a mainly hot country, so have salad almost every day-lettuce, cucumber, cherry tomatoes..throw in red onion for more taste, some feta, hummus, tzaziki(spelling) etc and some mayo..I know it’s fatty, but I can’t eat it without, with, it’s quite nice and I’m getting all those good bits.

Jenthefredo · 27/04/2021 20:41

Had my gallbladder out 7 years ago :)
Its odd...I don't find salad filling even when served with a protein source.
And pretty soon after eating a salad* I get heartburn, feel bloated and more often than not nauseated.
No idea why.

  • eg: baby salad leaves, tomatoes, raddish, avocado, egg/ham, coleslaw

Anonmousse · 27/04/2021 20:41

I'm not a massive fan, but dressing ruins it for me.
But I'm quite bland, I can take or leave lettuce or any sort of leaves, I like cucumber, tomatoes, carrots (but not grated) avocado, beetroot (no vinegar) sweetcorn
Not keen on radish, raw peppers and celery but would consider eating if part of a mixed salad.
Actively dislike olives and raw onion.

DH loves salad. In the summer he often prepares what he thinks are amazing, interesting salads. They're still salad . (and I've usually snaffled a bag of crisps in the time he spent faffing chopping and preparing)

TokenGinger · 27/04/2021 20:42

I was the same. Hated salad all of my life. Only recently I've started to eat it and not hate it. I buy the shredded lettuce from the supermarket which seems easier to tolerate. I usually use a sweet chilli dressing to give it more flavour. I like it with pickled onions, they mask the flavour of the lettuce. I always have to have something else on the fork with the salad though; ham, egg, rice, potato etc. I couldn't just eat a mouthful of salad 🤮

PomegranateSeed · 27/04/2021 20:43

It’s such a broad category though. I’m not a big fan of iceberg and a lot of lettuce type leaves but do love spinach, lamb’s lettuce, watercress and rocket. Salads are just a bunch of chopped up stuff mixed together with other things so it’s hard to imagine not liking any. Salads have moved on from the 70s offerings but if you don’t like them don’t eat them.

Jenthefredo · 27/04/2021 20:43

My friend made me one last year and it was GRIM
It had fruit, nuts and loads of oil.
I felt quite ill after eating it:(

Fuck it . Grin

Life's to short to feel like that and eat something you don't enjoy in some weird quest for health.

Just eat veg in a form you do enjoy.

toocold54 · 27/04/2021 20:44

I sometimes feel like I'm going to choke on the leaves. Weird.

There is actually a thing where you can’t eat certain foods as you believe you’ll choke or they’ll make you sick. Maybe you tried it once and almost chocked and now you have a kind of phobia of it.

MilduraS · 27/04/2021 20:44

The only way I enjoy a salad is by adding enough calorific ingredients that it ends up being more calories than what I call "normal" food. I'll eat an occasional side salad with something heavy but I couldn't have a salad as a meal.

Jenthefredo · 27/04/2021 20:44

I don't mind iceberg tbh
I may just need to accept I'm not a salad person 😁

Yup. Can’t stand the stuff. I much prefer huge bowls of fresh fruit salad.

WorriedMillie · 27/04/2021 20:45

I find the leaves quite hard work to eat, I tend to give up half way through Grin

Jenthefredo · 27/04/2021 20:45

I shall, indeed, "fuck it"

Fruit salad...now you're talking!

I hardly ever have a salad. It is boring and doesn’t fill me up.

Titsywoo · 27/04/2021 20:47

Nope I just can't get on with it. All tastes like grass to me and i hate cucumber, tomatoes etc. If I cover it in loads of stuff so i can't taste it then I can bear it but seems like a waste of time to me. I love cooked veg so would prefer just to eat that.

Jenthefredo · 27/04/2021 20:47

I'm very glad I'm not the only salad hater 💜
