Or is it something after a while you take for granted?

I absolutely HATE the whole "big day out at the beach" thing. The best thing about living near the coast is that we can go for just a couple of hours. I take the preschooler at least once a week year round. Older kids we probs go once a month through the winter, but at least once a week in the summer. I love being able to pack a picnic tea, grab the kids from school and head straight down the beach. Absolutely hate it in the school holidays though, obvs- the only way I can bear it is to get down there for 7.30am and leave before 10am!

On my doorstep. Literally 2 minutes away and I'm guilty or hardly going. Have started to more now.

HappyHedgehog247 · 25/04/2021 17:53

Never take it for granted. Go all year around. Whole days in summer with picnics and body boards. Winter walks with thermos. Love the sea!

joystir59 · 25/04/2021 17:54

I live five minutes from two beaches and go to the beach every day pretty day. We moved here four years ago and we chose a house very near the sea so that we would make full use of the location and it would never feel like a chore getting to the beach.
I swim in the sea, wearing a wet suit etc if need be. I love the beach and the sea.

We live less than ten minutes from the beach and have done for five years. Definitely don’t take it for granted (yet!) Can see the sea out of a couple of windows and it’s a lovely feeling. We don’t do masses of ‘beach days’ but go for walks multiple times a week. It’s nice to be able to go at odd times when tourists aren’t as abundant and has been an absolute god-send during lockdowns! Walking along the seafront in the evening in the dark with the waves crashing is my favourite thing to do. Have found that we get lots more friends wanting to come and stay here than when we weren’t near the seaside which makes us feel lucky that we live here!

joystir59 · 25/04/2021 17:54

I should explain that I live on a headland that separates the two beaches.

joystir59 · 25/04/2021 17:55

I also have an incredible view of the sea from.my living room windows

We live in rural Cornwall, and I know this will shock some readers, we rarely go to the beach. It's an hour's drive to get to either coast, and when you get there the tide has to be out (which rules out every other week) and if the weather is good, the beach is mobbed. So we only go in winter.

knockles · 25/04/2021 18:01

I love our beaches. I like them when their quiet, but in summer time they are heaving with tourists and I don't enjoy that, unless we go early evening. We are very lucky to have them

joystir59 · 25/04/2021 18:02

An hour's drive means you don't live at the coast. When I say I live five mins away from.the beach, that's on foot.

allthingsred · 25/04/2021 18:07

20 mins walk. In the summer we go daily. Now walk along 2x week purely for exercise

Scoobydoobydo · 25/04/2021 18:10

Yes, nearly every day with my dogs
Love it

AllOutOfNaiceHam · 25/04/2021 18:10

I work less than a minute's walk away from the beach, but only get the chance to go down there every 4 weeks or so, though I really want to try to get down more often, particularly in the summer, so I can swim.
I'll never get bored of living by the sea.

Autumnchill · 25/04/2021 18:11

I live this close to the beach and probably go for a walk 3-4 times a week. Never spend a day at the beach but love sitting and watching it

I love 10 minutes drive.

It's a very popular beach for lite surfers and paddle borders.

Last summer we used it more then ever. But you do have to get up and be there for 8.30am (fine we take stove and do bacon baps for breakfast).

We tend to leave at 12.30/1 though as don't do full day.

I go early to get a space in car park. There's only 4 disabled spaces and they also fill up quickly.

papooshka · 25/04/2021 18:14

I live a 4 min walk from a pebbley beach. I walk/run along the front about 3-4 times a week. During the summer I probably go 2-3 times a week to sit/watch the kids swim.
Never get tired of it and love the open space and sound of the sea.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 25/04/2021 18:18

I grew up 5 mins from the beach, we could see it from our house. I can't remember ever being on the actual beach.

We did use to walk the promenade a fair bit, especially if the waves were up but can't remember ever building a sand castle etc.

To be fair though the beach 30 years ago was disgusting, raw sewage was dumped in the sea and anyone who went in it was at high risk of having really bad upset stomachs.

Tal45 · 25/04/2021 18:19

I lived a 2 minute drive from the beach growing up but didn't go very often. I guess it depends how much you like UK beaches, I'm not a fan as I hate the cold sea, the wind and crowds of people but some people absolutely love it.

Harls1969 · 25/04/2021 18:19

I spent my first 32 years living in a seaside town and definitely took it for granted. I hardly ever went on the beach or for walks along the prom. Saying that, I thoroughly enjoyed working in an office overlooking the sea. I do miss it now though

leli · 25/04/2021 18:19

I live near the beach and I love it. I go maybe weekly? When I'm retired it will be much more often, probably daily. The wind and the sun and the sea and dunes and the people and my dog create a unique atmosphere, timeless, ageless and help my mental health a lot. We take a lot of friends there too.

Eatingsoupwithafork · 25/04/2021 18:21

I’ve been there both today and yesterday. I go much more since covid for walks etc. but I’ve always went there in all weathers. As much as I go for walks I’m not really in to sunbathing there or doing what I’d do at the beach on holiday. I tend to go very early or late in the day to avoid the crowds. It gets incredibly busy if there is even a little bit of sunshine.

Reinventinganna · 25/04/2021 18:23

We walk the dog daily along the beach and eat dinner there once a week in the summer but probably only sit on the beach once or twice a year because it gets so busy.
We are very lucky to be surrounded by beautiful beaches.

leeds2glasgow · 25/04/2021 18:25

Live just by it, usually would but at the moment it's too packed 🤷‍♀️

Knittingnanny · 25/04/2021 18:26

Ten minute walk from a shingle non touristy beach on south coast. I moved here in 1978 aged 21 and have never taken it for granted. We go most days all year round just for a walk or a sit with our beach chairs and tea for an hour or so.
Take some of the local grandchildren after school for an icecream maybe once or twice a week all year round.
If anyone takes it for granted, it’s probably my adult children who grew up here, we did go to the beach often but they were always happier in the park with a ball and a picnic. If we had been a sailing family I think they would have been keener but it was beyond our budget then!
2 of them live elsewhere now but by coincidence both near a beach.

RandomUsernameHere · 25/04/2021 18:27

We live on an island, so surrounded by beaches between 10 and 25 minutes away. In the summer I take the DCs a lot as they like it. I'm not really a beach person though. Wouldn't say I take it for granted, just don't really like it. I run along the cliff paths and coastal road a lot which is nice, but would be just as happy with nice countryside away from the coast.
