If you live at the seaside, do you go to the beach often..?

Or is it something after a while you take for granted?

We can walk or cycle to the beach in about 10-15 mins. We have busy lives (outside of Covid) so extra curricular activities etc get in the way but we try to go after school once or twice a fortnight or so in the summer term. In the holidays we go quite a lot. I cycle along the prom at least once a week and during lockdown we went a lot as our daily exercise.
My kids are 10,13 and 14 and have lived here their whole lives but aren't bored of it yet. They still love to swim in the sea and just mess about on the beach.

I can sea the beach from my window, I live 1 minuet walk away, but since my dog died I’ve hardly been on. The kids love it in the summer but maybe only only go for a paddle twice a year or so.

I live on the seafront. We go every day to a beach in the summer holidays. And we try and go at least once on the weekend throughout the year - rockpooling so far whilst the weather isn’t warm.

But it’s been so windy this weekend, we haven’t been at all.

I grew up in England, about 1.5 hours away from the coast. I have so many memories of lovely full day out to the coast. I’ve lived in the Channel Islands for 11 years now, and still adore the many beaches and my bedroom view of the sea. I haven’t taken it for granted yet.

For 7 years we lived right by a beautiful beach. DC were young. From April to September practically went every day after school. Took picnics. DC just adored it and it was just like going to the local park. They met their friends there and spent hours in the water. Fantastic spot. We moved inland then and dc are grown up but all still love the sea and in the water any chance they get.

I’m a 30 second walk to the prom. I go most days. If nothing else just to walk the dog. In the summer we go to a lovely little beach 5 minutes drive from home that’s more sheltered most days after school. (A lot of people here seem to. It’s better than the park 😂)

carlywurly · 25/04/2021 20:10

I've just counted and we have 6 beaches within 5 miles of home.

We tend to go in the evenings for a post work swim or first thing for breakfast. I rarely go for the day - too hot and busy and you need to be organised with picnics or be prepared to spend a fortune in beach cafes.

Love the coastal paths at any time of the year if it's not raining or a howling gale.

I grew up by the seaside and moved away ages ago. Can't wait to move back! I used to go there a lot for walks with friends, for a drink, a proper beach day (probably the rarest). And I always knew quiet parts so it was great to get some space. I miss it. Whenever I go "home" I try to get to the beach for a walk. Something about the sound of the sea, it's good for me.

Scotland32 · 25/04/2021 20:32

We live a 5 minute drive. I go to that beach about twice a week for a swim and to other beaches in the area maybe once a fortnight for a walk.

Middersweekly · 25/04/2021 20:37

We live about a 10 minutes walk from the beach. I don’t go often during the winter but we go many times over the summer holidays. 🏖

Pickanee · 25/04/2021 20:38

We go almost every day. It blows the cobwebs away, the dog gets a run and the kids can splash. It’s breathtakingly beautiful and makes us all really happy 🥰

GettingItOutThere · 25/04/2021 20:52

no we are landlocked.

im so envious of those who live near a beach!!

where are these ideal places with no tourists>?

Sheilasfeels · 25/04/2021 20:54

We moved to about 30 mins walk of the seaside, after living in a Town. Every weekend we go to the beach for playing, swimming, sitting with my toddler. As soon as I get some free time I just head down for a coffee and a think. If you’ve always been someone who loved being next to the sea, then it’s a no-brainer. But if it’s just because you’re feeling a bit stuck where you are there might be better choices.

diamondpony80 · 25/04/2021 21:09

I grew up near the coast, about 15-20 minute drive from 4 beaches. We used to go nearly every weekend and often went swimming in the sea in the summer, although it was bloody freezing! I live about an hour from the nearest beach now and only go a few times a year. I miss having it nearby

waltzingparrot · 25/04/2021 22:11

5 mins away and we go a lot, but not on hot days when the world and his dog turn up.

We tend to go for late afternoon/evening walks when everyone's left. Occasionally take a disposable BBQ on summer evenings.

Wouldn't ever want to not live near the coast.

terrimom · 25/04/2021 22:15

Years ago I lived about 5 minute walk to the beach, I used to go 5 to 7 times a week. After work, I would bring a book and read for an hour or go for a walk. On the weekend I would go for the day. I loved it and miss it to this day! It was my favorite thing about living in that neighborhood, the apartment was nothing special but the beach made up for it.

FurrySlipperBoots · 25/04/2021 22:20

I live 5 mins drive/20 mins walk from the beach in Cornwall. I go about once a week in winter, walking the dog. In summer maybe twice a week to bodyboard. Spring and autumn once or twice a week.

PugInTheHouse · 25/04/2021 22:24

Don't often go and actually sit on the beach for the day but that's mainly because we are really busy with work and the kids sports however we will walk down there regularly or pop down for an ice cream. Never get bored of it and lived here all my life, in fact often when it's a beautiful day I just think how lucky we are (and ours is a crap beach compared to most). I probably did take it for granted in my early 20s but since having kids definitely not.

My nan spent every non rainy day from March to October at the beach pretty much, my mum took us as kids down there most days, it was a big thing in our family. Amazing memories.

gingercat02 · 25/04/2021 22:58

I live in the North so no one has a day out on the beach as we rarely have days when that is possible but you can always walk, have a coffee, ice cream, etc

Mamanyt · 25/04/2021 23:46

I grew up on the beach at Panama City Beach, Florida. Literally on the beach. Walk out the back door and step onto sand. After a certain number of years, you're done with sand. Sand in your shoes, sand in your clothes, sand in your food, your shower stall, your bathtub, on the floors, in the bed...EVERYWHERE. I now live about 18 miles from a beach, and may go every 2-3 years. So yes, YOU DO GET OVER IT!

Oh, and those romantic commercials on TV with a couple rolling about in the surf? Trust me on this...there are places on a woman's body that sand was NEVER meant to be!

Ariannah · 25/04/2021 23:59

I’m about 15 mins from the beach. It’s a dangerous place because once you go down the steps on the cliff nobody can see you on the beach. So you can only go at popular times otherwise you’re at risk of being attacked. A while ago the police arrested a man who was sitting in his van waiting for lone females to go down the steps to the beach early in the morning. There have also been attempted dog snatchings because thieves know that people take dogs to the beach and it’s sufficiently isolated for them to get away with it. So I don’t go on the beach unless others are there. But others are the last thing you want during a pandemic so I haven’t been at all in the past year.

OhGingleBells · 26/04/2021 09:27

Just to add that if you have a dog, your house will always be covered in sand!! We find it everywhere! But I would say that it’s worth it.

Aprilshowersandhail · 26/04/2021 09:37

We live across a green from the beach. Walking back across the green gets all the sand off all 16 ddoggy feet!

RestingPandaFace · 26/04/2021 09:38

I used to and never went for a day at the beach, but used to go for a walk along it or sit on the rocks a couple of times a week.

swimlittlefishy · 26/04/2021 09:40

And a few people said, it won't be as special when you live there and you'll get bored of it etc

I don't agree at all. I live 5 mins from the beach and I am there every single day. Sometimes more than once. Saved my life during repeated lockdowns.

MrsSprogett · 26/04/2021 10:13

I live near a beach. Practically lived there when the kids were smaller. I can't imagine living anywhere else, haven't been there since the lock down though as it got so busy. I'll never bore of it. The only downside of living in a seaside town is the traffic but you soon learn the short cuts
