Or is it something after a while you take for granted?

Are the seagulls very noisy or bothersome ?
I’m a mile and a half from the sea.

Every morning I’m woken up by squawking seagulls fighting on the roof.

mumonthehill · 24/04/2021 15:52

20 minutes from the sea here and during the spring/summer go at least 3 times a week. Had a bbq on the beach last night and ds on his paddle board. In winter we go for a walk about once a month. You do take it for granted!

Kezzie200 · 24/04/2021 15:54

No! Hardly ever.

When I was growing up (70s) we would go during summer holidays and parents would go if they were free. There was always someone there to look after us if we had a problem. It was very informal! The only real understanding was we told our parents where we were going and didn't go anywhere else and were home for tea! Of course, sometimes they would turn up there too.

As an adult we've moved but have an even better beach here. Never use it as a beach, so to speak. Walk along it for the bracing air, but not for leisure.

The kids went on their way home from school with their mates but it was somewhere to hang out more than using it for bathing. A lot of local children do use it for sailing though.

Kezzie200 · 24/04/2021 15:56

Seagulls can be noisy, but at home there's enough sky they aren't a problem really. Just don't feed them.

They do cause problems in town though where there's more people eating takeout.

Devlesko · 24/04/2021 15:58

My dh grandparents retired to Blackpool from a Lancashire mill town.
They went once when they first moved in, never went again.

Kezzie200 · 24/04/2021 15:58

Where we are the beach is only one thing to "move for", there's a lot of other advantages and disadvantages you need to weigh up and that depends entirely on the town you are looking at.

ImInStealthMode · 24/04/2021 16:00

We live by the beach and I go often when it's hot, but not much otherwise unless the beach makes up part of a walk.

I very very rarely go to the beach on holiday though, on the basis that I can do it at home any old time, but I don't usually have outdoor pool / comfy lounger / pool bar access at home.

Both, but we live in a town on the sea. Different probably if it was more rural. They squawk no end, rip any bin bag they can get to apart and dive bomb the cat when he's relaxing outside Sad

That said, after 16 years here none of that 'bothers' me as such. It just is what it is and there'd be other nuisances in other places.

starfishmummy · 24/04/2021 16:08

Years ago I used to live 10 minites from the beach, Id walk along the prom or pier but rarely on the beach.

But I was single, kid free; i was in the area for work mon to fri and at my proper home most weekends. And it wasnt the nicest of beaches. I mean who wants to sit among the plastic debris from sanitary towels and the tampon applicators that escaped the sewage works?!!

fairydustandpixies · 24/04/2021 16:11

Nope. It's far too busy!

MingeOnFire · 24/04/2021 16:16

I live less than 2 minutes walk from door to sand, and don't take it for granted. Go few times a week in ok/good weather, less in winter but still go regularly. I love it.

The seagulls only bother me because they shit everywhere, I quite enjoy the noise of them.

MintyMabel · 24/04/2021 16:27

I used to live near a beach. We went there if the weather was good.

TinyGlassOwl · 24/04/2021 16:33

We're just about to move to a house 10 mins walk from the beach. I am ridiculously excited and determined not to take it for granted. When we were looking for properties the only real deal-breaking criteria was 'must be no more than 15 minutes walk from having sand between my toes' - partly because I knew if it was any further than that I'd probably not bother going!

I went to university by the sea and have never really got over how lovely that was, so I'm hoping this move lives up to those memories somewhat.

Might have to get a dog to force me down to the beach every day...

Sometimes in the morning in summer, when the sun rises v early, it gets quite noisy. They don’t attack you where I am.
cripez · 24/04/2021 16:33

We are five mins from the beach and go maybe once a fortnight on average, more in summer.

We don't take it for granted, DH and I will often pop down to the harbour for a quick lunch if the kids are out at school/childminder.

Natsku · 24/04/2021 16:35

I lived a 5 minute walk from the beach in my teenage years and went most days during the summer and fairly frequently the rest of the year for walks.

neroforte · 24/04/2021 16:36

i live literally 30 seconds down the road from one, so i go most days when i get bored of being inside.

Natsku · 24/04/2021 16:37

I currently live 5 minute walk away from a lakeside beach now, don't go quite so often as I prefer to swim from the jetty (a nearly daily thing in the summer) but at least once a week in the summer.

Aprilshowersandhail · 24/04/2021 16:38

20 steps from the sand here.. Very good for your mh.
Extremely..
Drifting of to sleep to the sound of waves is the best..
Don't even hear the fog horn anymore...
Dog walk every day. Dc go about once a week whatever the weather..

FSVin · 24/04/2021 16:40

I live somewhere with an absolute mass of gulls which are always audible, and which drive DP batty, but which I rather like - they remind me I'm beside the sea all the time. I never used to be very fond of them till I moved here, but now they sound like home. On the other hand, a friend lives by a different beach a few miles up the road and doesn't have anything like the number of gulls despite being a literal stone's throw from the beach.

They do get annoying early on a summer's morning sometimes, but I used to get more bothered by your "garden variety" birds jumping around on the roof above my bedroom early morning at a previous home.

MrsPsmalls · 24/04/2021 16:40

20 mins walk away and have been at least every other day during all lockdown, for a walk mainly or occasional lunch coffee icecream. It's been my saviour.

SelkieIntegrated · 24/04/2021 16:44

In the summer i go for a walk along the beach 4 or 5 times a week but during winter, it can be never! Although, all the bars and restaurants are near the beach.

luckylavender · 24/04/2021 16:45

I live at the seaside. Never go to the beach

Blindstupid · 24/04/2021 16:45

I live literally 2 mins walk away ... I rarely go. Not sure I’d say ‘take it for granted’ ... but dc (they’re now young adults) definitely didn’t/don’t appreciate what they have on their doorstep.

When dc were younger, it was absolutely lovely being able to pop to the beach in a matter of minutes. If they were tired/grouchy, it was great being able to nip there. I definitely see it as a bonus being so close - however it also means seaside holidays aren’t special, they’re just home from home.

RubyFowler · 24/04/2021 16:51

I live near a beach, go all the time even when busy as I don't have to drive, park, go in a cafe for lunch etc. which are the usual things that are annoying when its busy. I walk along the coast a few times a week, always think its beautiful.
Also its a nice place to be off season too.
Seagulls are noisy but I'm used to it.
