Clean or dirty hair for going to hairdresser?

Random question but I can't make up my mind. I'm having my hair done tomorrow (cut and semi-permanent colour). I had been planning to go swimming tonight so was going to wash my hair afterwards. But that plan fell through and now I'm torn. My hair does need a wash and I don't want the hairdresser to think it's gross to touch it while dirty but is it ridiculous to wash it before going to the hairdresser as she will wash it anyway? Also I'm planning on doing a boot camp tomorrow morning so will get a bit sweaty too.

What would you do? Options are

A) don't wash it at all and go with dirty hair
B) wash it tonight then go to the boot camp without washing it afterwards
C) wash it after the boot camp and risk it still being damp when arriving at the hairdresser (I don't usually blow dry my hair)

I believe that you shouldn't have newly washed hair for a colour. So either leave it or wash it tonight.

Donatella · 22/04/2021 21:17

That's what I thought, I'm leaning towards washing it tonight but wasn't sure if that would still be too close to the colour

I'd wash it tonight, she'll put the colour on first I imagine and you'll be sitting there cringing at her colouring your dirty hair 😬

If you hadn't said swimming I would say leave it.

Im not fully clued up about chlorine and dyes and how they might react together though, I just have a memory in the back of my head. Hoping someone with more clues comes along.

MrBond · 22/04/2021 21:20

Wash it tonight.

gamerchick · 22/04/2021 21:21

Ah right you haven't been Grin

Just leave it then.

DrunkenKoala · 22/04/2021 21:21

I prefer clean hair. If my hair is dirty when I’m having a colour put on my scalp really itches but with clean hair it’s fine. I’ve never had a problem with the colour taking when I’ve had clean hair.

Planningobjection · 22/04/2021 21:21

Wash it tonight.

Donatella · 22/04/2021 21:22

Thanks all, definitely a clear majority there!

I’ve seen clean hair only on hairdressers windows

Roominmyhouse · 22/04/2021 21:25

As an ex-hairdresser if it’s really dirty or greasy please wash it. Having to do someone’s hair when it’s dirty is grim, it has a horrible smell. It’s no ideal to wash your hair immediately before a colour as your natural oils help protect your scalp but the night before should be fine.

Nataliafalka · 22/04/2021 21:51

Surely the whole point of going to the hairdressers is so that you don’t have to do it yourself. Leave it

getyourfreakon · 22/04/2021 21:53

I couldn't go anywhere with dirty hair and mine is very long (unlucky in that I have to wash it daily). Just give it a wash.

dementedpixie · 22/04/2021 21:54

Depends when you last washed it tbh
I had highlights yesterday (Wednesday) and had last washed it on Monday. Highlights are put on dry hair and the hairdresser doesn't like to do it on freshly washed hair as its less manageable

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 22/04/2021 22:08

@dementedpixie same here, highlights yesterday and washed it on the Monday

Wolfiefan · 22/04/2021 22:10

I definitely wouldn’t turn up with sweaty hair. Wash it after bootcamp.

SunshineandDaisies · 22/04/2021 22:20

I'm a hairdresser and absolutely wash it 🙂
The having unwashed hair is better for a colour is a myth. Any product or build up or grease actually acts as a barrier on the hair xx

pinkypink24 · 22/04/2021 22:23

Ugh. Can't believe you are asking this. I'm due at hair salon Sat AM & I will be washing mine tomorrow. Expecting someone else to be touching & handling your manky greasy dirty hair ... that's just grim. I would be so embarrassed.

I've seen the same post posted before re this... do you people have no shame?! I mean WTF ... hair gets dirty really easily.

Grim. As fuck. Wash it you scruff Confused

hairymuffet · 23/04/2021 00:14

Would you turn up for a smear test with an unwashed foof ?
Biscuit

Divineswirls · 23/04/2021 01:38

I wouldn't dream of going to the hairdressers with unwashed hair, I just couldn't.

dementedpixie · 23/04/2021 08:12

But I only wash my hair a couple of times a week so washing it Monday and then going to get my hair done on the Wednesday means my hair wasn't actually dirty. It was still soft and wasn't greasy. If I wash it too soon beforehand it is fine and flyaway and is harder to control when doing the foils

MrBond · 23/04/2021 08:14

Wow, @pinkypink24 and @hairymuffet, you appear to have gotten lost, AIBU is that way >>>>

Calling people scruffs and handing out biscuits- it's an honest question. No need to be rude.

FredaFox · 23/04/2021 08:21

I had my hair cut last Friday and hadn’t washed it for three days (wfh seeing no one so left it a day longer than usual)
There was no way I was going the hair dressers with dirty hair and funnily enough at the sink I was asked had I washed it that day as they could tell
Not sure if they were bothered but was surprised they asked

6rainbow · 23/04/2021 08:32

I don't colour my hair but I always wash my hair before going to the hair dresser even if they are going to do a wash and cut

Good lord, have some respect for the service provider and clean yourself.
