If you won the lottery....

snackmonster · 10/04/2021 15:33

Okay, just a bit of fun!

If you won the lottery (let's say £146 million - basically unlimited money!) what would you do/buy?

Would you give friends/family any money? Or would you hide it from friends?

Would you get a chef or a personal trainer?

Home gym/pool/sauna/cars?

Would you quit your job?

I would definitely buy a nice big house, in the countryside, with plenty of land so I could have a smallholding. Would probably quit my job so I could have more time for my crafting and hobbies. I'd give my immediate family money...not sure about my friends though.

Place in Switzerland
Place in London
Cotswolds

Move to Lisbon

Money to family and friends

And donate money to very specific causes like cancer treatment for people who can bennefit form having a trial of a drug etc that they have to pay for

I would also get a Range Rover vogue with a v8 engine and I would fly by private jet

I would holiday a lot

gamerchick · 10/04/2021 15:36

I would anonymously gift chunks to who I wanted to including myself. So I could join in with the who has gifted money thing.

That way I get a bit of peace when I'm spending more than usual.

StylishMummy · 10/04/2021 15:40

I'd buy a lovely big house for us, PIL, my parents, siblings. Then I'd start a new business offering 100% mortgages to those who had a proven history of successfully renting for 3 years.

Help generation rent and hopefully make some money in the meantime!

Mydogisagentleman · 10/04/2021 15:42

Leave work, gift money to family, move to a lovely warm country, get another couple of Bedlington and donate to their rescue fund.

Usernameisgone · 10/04/2021 15:43

Nice house
Nice car
IVF
Few more dogs 🤣

Whatwouldscullydo · 10/04/2021 15:44

Big house in Nice location.

Don't to some charities

Bail out friends and family

Put some away for kids futures

Body maintenance..get all skin, hair, dental etc stuff sorted.

Get a dog a cleaner and a chaufer.

Deffo.leave work.

TheMotherlode · 10/04/2021 15:47

I would give a decent amount to immediate family (parents, PILs, sister, SIL).

Definitely quit my job. Buy a lovely big house somewhere semi rural, and a flat in London. And then just spend my time travelling, learning new skills, eating amazing food, and generally just enjoying myself.

UhtredRagnarson · 10/04/2021 15:47

I’d buy the house I currently rent. Probably for more than it’s worth as I really want it. And I’d renovate it throughout.

I’d also buy my parents home off them as they’re eager to sell but can’t get it sold so they could move to their retirement home.

I’d give a chunk to my sister and my best friend to buy themselves a house each.

I could probably do with some new clothes that don’t have holes and bleach on them.

Holiday. Dc could pick and plan it.

Oh I’d buy a camper and travel round Ireland spending as long as it takes to see everywhere I want to see.

I’d take some advice on investing a tonne of it so I had an income for life off it.

I’d like to do something local too. Help others with affordable housing or something.

LubaLuca · 10/04/2021 15:47

I'd do it all. I wouldn't give huge amounts to parents, siblings or friends. I'd do my very best at blowing the lot on pleasing ourselves, including giving plenty away to causes that mean a lot to us.

Would you quit your job?

I think this should be a condition of winning the jackpot; if you aren't going to give up your job, don't enter. Let someone have the chance of living the life of Riley!

BrownEyedGirl80 · 10/04/2021 15:49

A bigger house.
3 more dogs.
Holiday abroad every half term.
Brand new land rover discovery.

Bargebill19 · 10/04/2021 15:49

Leave work and move home. Not tell anyone.

UhtredRagnarson · 10/04/2021 15:50

Would you quit your job?

My job cleaning other people’s toilets? You bet every single penny I would! Grin

BarbiesWorld · 10/04/2021 15:56

This is a fond daydream of mine Grin

146 mil =

3 mil each in trust for my 2 kids for when they reach 25

Then the 140 would be in half between my and stbxh so 70 mil left for me.

5 each to my 3 parents and oldest friend brings it to 50 mil.

Invest and get advice on most after buying the dream house (currently on the market for 900k). Couple of holiday home/apartments and whatnot. Set up the hair loss charity I've thought about for years after I finish uni.

Then I'd keep going with my education just for fun while travelling and giving my kids a really solid childhood.

Think I'd not tell anyone it was quite that much though. Obviously I'd say I'd won the lottery bit wait until there was a 50mil jackpot so I could explain the big chunks to immediate family but other people wolud assume I had a similar amount left

elsaesmeralda · 10/04/2021 15:56

But a house in the country somewhere, couple of places abroad

Sort out family

Donate some

Lots of holidays

My god the list is endless

gollymissdolly · 10/04/2021 15:57

I'd buy a plot of land and employ an architect to help design and build my dream home.
I'd give a lot of money to charity and family.
A second(or 3rd) home somewhere sunny overseas would be very nice too.

DarkDarkNight · 10/04/2021 15:58

I used to think I would buy a house in New York, one somewhere warm by a beach. I don’t know if I would even be bothered now. I’d get a nice house in the town I live now and a gorgeous 2nd home nearby (there’s one for sale for £4.5 million on the waterfront of a local lake with its own jetty).

I’d get a new house and cars for my mum and dad - their choice - and a lump sum so they never need think about money again. Maybe a holiday home. I would sort my siblings out and some sort of trust or pension pot for my child and my nieces and nephews. With the exception of one uncle I don’t think I’d bother with wider family as I know they wouldn’t think of me.

Ylvamoon · 10/04/2021 15:58

I actually wouldn't change that much...

Yes to quitting my job. And spending more time doing the things I love. Like travelling and helping out a particular charity that is close to my heart - both financially and giving my time!

I wouldn't buy a bigger house, I'd rather stay put and tell friends & wider family that I semi retired early - I will just about get away with it!
I would however help out my very close elderly family members, ensuring they have all the comfort and care they need.

cariadlet · 10/04/2021 16:00

Give up work
Buy a house in Costa Rica with lots of land
Give money to my mum, my sister and some charities.

Spend the rest of my life relaxing in my new home: breakfast on the balcony, looking out at the jungle; lying in a hammock, reading and dozing; strolling along the beach. Bliss!

ginghamtablecloths · 10/04/2021 16:00

It's my favourite fantasy but somehow I think I'd be a bit overwhelmed if it really happened.

In my locality there's a beautiful Grade II listed cottage for sale which I've always loved. Normally I'd steer clear of a listed building but if I had the funds I think I'd buy it. I'd furnish and decorate it exactly as I pleased within the guidelines obviously and get the garden landscaped to my taste.

I'd gift money to family and friends but how I could do so anonymously is a mystery I doubt I will ever have to contend with.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 10/04/2021 16:00

Buy a house nearby, preferably an old style one with lots of outbuildings (for DH to play in) and some land for the DCs to muck about on (drive old bangers/quad bikes, camp with mates). Far enough from neighbours not to annoy them. Build a swimming pool. Home gym.

Buying family and friends houses/giving money would get complicated as I have half siblings on both sides and DH has several siblings with drug problems. That would require careful thought.

Set up a housing association so that local people on low incomes can have secure housing. Run it not for profit, obviously.

I'd still work for a while, but probably 2 days a week or locum. I like my job. DH could quit his business though, he struggles to make a profit as he has bipolar so can only work when not suicidally depressed. He could play with motorbikes and maybe have some pigs. Also, he'd need to chauffeur the DCs around until they can drive as public transport here is shite.

Mincepiesallyearround · 10/04/2021 16:02

Oooh I like this game. I’d obviously sort out friends and relatives, by the big house etc and have amazing holidays. I’d devote the rest to children’s play spaces all over the country. So brilliant well designed playgrounds, With stuff for teenagers to do also (skate park, climbing walls), some could have a pavilion which could be staffed at certain times so groups and activities (funded from the money) could take place.

MiniTheMinx · 10/04/2021 16:13

I used to think I'd buy a huge old house and a lot of land and do the whole horses and dogs thing. I'd also need a good sized barn for all the classic cars I'd buy.

Now, I'd buy an older house with character not too far from where I live now, and a flat in Cairo. I still want a 70s Mustang and an AC Cobra.

Several million in trusts for all DC. Buy my best friend a house, my other bestie a flat in Brighton because she misses the sea.

I'd support a few charities, I'm most concerned about homelessness. Would be happy to give time as well as money.

Only other stuff on my wish list is a late C18th blunderbuss and a pair of Queen Ann duelling pistols.

snackmonster · 10/04/2021 16:24

Love hearing what everyone would do Grin

@ginghamtablecloths it's my favourite fantasy too haha!

I would definitely go on holiday a lot... I would love to go to the Caribbean or the fancy Greek islands like Santorini.

It would be nice not to have financial worries looming over you, or just not be constrained by finances. Would be amazing to just live an easy but luxurious life in a nice house, with kids, dogs, being a SAHM I think (and DP as a SAHD too!).

Oh, I would get a professional massage at least every week. For at least an hour. I loooove massages but DP hates doing them.

I'd do nothing for six months and make a really solid plan for how to make the most of it without regrets or becoming selfish.
