If you won the lottery....

Okay, just a bit of fun!

If you won the lottery (let's say £146 million - basically unlimited money!) what would you do/buy?

Would you give friends/family any money? Or would you hide it from friends?

Would you get a chef or a personal trainer?

Home gym/pool/sauna/cars?

Would you quit your job?

I would definitely buy a nice big house, in the countryside, with plenty of land so I could have a smallholding. Would probably quit my job so I could have more time for my crafting and hobbies. I'd give my immediate family money...not sure about my friends though.

I'd give money but in a trust type thing so they get a weekly sum....... But the full amount would be released if a terminal illness of whatever is diagnosed. As you can see I spend a lot f time winning the lottery in my head 😂😂😂

Four of the five schools my children have been at would receive large donations to their bursary funds. A couple of local charities that have helped me in the past similarly - I might well talk to them directly to work out the best way to support them and make a difference.

Id definitely be employing staff, one or two of the right people ideally. Cook/Housekeeper/personal trainer type for sure, I could be a lot healthier with someone else helping me make decisions and then stick to them! Someone to do admin for me, set up a timetable and tell me what I'm doing when. I'm a music teacher and would want to maximise how many children I could support with this.

First class flights back 'home' and whatever it takes to help my elderly mother sort her paperwork, sell up and get back to the UK. She's stuck at the moment with a house she can't keep up and can't afford the taxes to transfer it to us without selling it either. If money were no object we'd probably still sell up but it might take the pressure off!

I agree with those who say wait, before deciding what to do with the bulk of a huge sum though.

Piglet92 · 11/04/2021 13:37

First thing - get my teeth done. Then a few hundred acre estate with a modest house.

RaiseTheBeastie · 11/04/2021 16:09

Saying that, it's a nice problem to have, and one that I think about often

Me too...I'd love to have the ultimate first world problem of worry over who to gift money to, how much and how!

nettytree · 11/04/2021 16:52

I would give my sil 10 million so she could emigrate to Australia. Just so I wouldn't have to see her again.

Employ a wealth management consultant.

I’d pay my mortgage off, hmm, the big flat is for sale in this building, so maybe I’d buy that, living in a penthouse sounds quite posh.

I would buy a small holiday home in the UK.

I’m the ‘poor’ friend so I probably wouldn’t give a great deal to friends, but I would pay a few mortgages off and put some money in a trust for a friends two children.

My cousin has moved abroad and recently had a baby, I would help them as I know they are finding the loss of an income hard.

I would quit my main job.

I would invest in my rugby club, I would also donate to our adoption support group, it is extremely important and we’re always short on vital funds.

I would like to open a gym thats fully accessible, so many can’t be used by those with disabilities. I would also like to somehow produce highly quality PT training that ensures PTs know how to adequately support disabled gym users.

Somehow provide support for LAC and exLAC children, there are some amazing services available, but there simply isn’t the funding to enable all children to be supported. I’d also like to be able to offer things like respite and holidays for LAC children and their families and provide support for young LAC adults as they reach independence.

I’d also do a few splashing the cash things, I’d get my teeth done, have a very minor nose job (I have filler at the minute). Embrace my inner chav and have a huge walk in wardrobe that enables me to display my trainers.

I'd have to assume I was going to live quite a lot longer I'd want time to enjoy it!
I wouldn't want to burden myself with lots of extra homes that would need managing. Maybe we'd buy one of the nice flats on a beautifully landscaped development near where we live now, which overlooks two reservoirs; that would be our London pied à terre, then we'd get a nice big house in Suffolk or Norfolk. Actually I might get one built, very eco.
Big money gifts to DB, nieces, DP's DCs. Lovely holidays. New furniture!
And of course charitable donations.

FlipFlapFlop1980 · 11/04/2021 17:57

I live in a tiny house and the kids need their own room so we'd be happy with a house with 3 beds and a study.

Would secretly love a swimming pool and have my hair cut once every couple of months (lucky if I get a cut once a year).

I would love a weekly massage though!

I'd buy my best friend and her parents their houses and give them some money. Plus I'd anonymously donate some money to people who have been there for me.

Plus there's a local charity that have really helped me with my children so I'd give them some money.

I'd do some other things like buy a big sack of pressies at Christmas for kids in care in my local area. And food for people that are struggling.

And I'd make sure my parents, siblings and in laws were looked after.

Plus donate to wildlife conservation...

cyclingmad · 11/04/2021 18:11

I'd quit my job and help my closest friends and family out.

Then buy two properties, definately one overlooking an ocean and one near enough to shops but basically no close neighbours.

I'd hire a cleaner, chef and gardener...I don't mind doing these jobs but with so much money I'd rather help more people and employing people is one way. I'd probably have the chef teach me to cook as well.

I'd have a personal trainer too, one who can give sports massages as well. At this point with so much money I can use it to make sure im on top of my heath and at my best.

I'd love a house with a heated outdoor pool; gym, library and proper built in dressing room.

I'd travel the world spending a few months in each country as I explore it.

I'd also like to anonymously help people out, those who need money to help take thier child to x country for life saving treatment etc. Obviously being caeful and making sure its a legit case.

WentworthPrison · 11/04/2021 18:30

I would quit my teaching job but would go in voluntarily on my own terms Grin. I would share out about 50 million between family and friends. I would give 1-2 million to my school to ensure the best Covid catch up possible.

I would go on a worldwide holiday of a lifetime for a year or 2.

I would buy a large house and get 5 dogs Smile.

I would give my local council a few million to improve services.

I would keep a few million for retirement.

I would get a personal trainer, PA, hairdresser and chef for a few years. Grin

Buy Reading goal and save it as an art centre for the nation.

Support my favourite rescues

Set my family up

Buy a gothic pile in the countryside with seperate accommoation for a full time chaffuer and house keeper. Must have an orangery and library. I will furnish it from auction houses and specially commissioned pieces

Clean ironed white linen on my bed fresh every day

Carouselfish · 11/04/2021 18:39

Set up a retirement home for non wealthy old people and their pets combined with an animal sanctuary.

Give some to a list of friends.

Buy the walrus from Marineland and give her to Phil Demers.

Have a ranch in Montana, a flat in Rome and a house by the sea in Devon.

VictoriaLudorum · 11/04/2021 18:55

I wouldn't tell anyone, at first.
Luckily I have a fairly "affluent" lifestyle, so moving house and buying a new car would not raise any eyebrows.
I would invest enough for me to retire now. Put money aside to travel when this is possible again. Move house. Replace my very elderly, but still wonderful car, but ensure the new house had a garage for me to keep her (the car). Give it 6 months and then probably give a substantial amount of money to my siblings, nieces and nephews. Might also donate to my old school.
Possibly give some money to my oldest friend and to other friends to do up their bathroom (they are now renting, having given over their house to their 2 daughters, both of whom have their own houses).
I might possibly buy a house in the UK, but it would be unlikely that I would live there for any length of time.
That would be it.

Kezzie200 · 11/04/2021 19:25

Bank 40 percent for Inheritance Tax.

Give kids money to buy themselves houses and upgrade their cars and whack maximum amounts into pension funds for us all annually.

Pay off the children's student loans.

Allow daughter to leave her job as the company are complete tools and enable her to do what she is amazing at (but rarely earns enough to live off of).

Move, not sure where too but somewhere close by as I love it here. And buy some second homes including London.

Husband would buy a new car. I wouldn't as I love mine!

Bank a lot with solicitors to give to friends, family, and bank roll some local charities. Look at the major charities and consider those we wish to help. So the money can be given away semi anonymously.

snackmonster · 12/04/2021 15:29

I looove how everyone has plans, oh if only we could all win this much money!

I also never do the lottery so I think it would be just a little unlikely for it to happen to me...

I'm not sure I'd buy a second home, I think I would just stay in fancy hotels whenever I traveled anywhere.

I would definitely pop a few babies out too and set up trust funds for them. A decent amount so they wouldn't have to work too hard in the future.

I think I would gift about 5 million to my parents and sister each, and then 1 million for in-laws and other family members. And then treat my friends to things rather than gifting them money. I don't think I would tell anyone aside from closest family members (and DP of course) how much I'd won.

Money for family.
Revision of foot surgery for my daughter
Contact lenses for my daughter
Dental implants x 2 for me if it's not too late
Abroad for a month to come to terms. Business class private flight and a large private villa with pool, sauna jacuzzi and masseuse. My back is killing me.
Obviously I'd jack my job. I hate it and my boss could collect equipment from my house.
Sell my house, love it but the area around me has changed negatively so I've been desperately trying to leave for decades.plus daughters school is shit but they all are around here.
Private school or proper online school for daughter.
Counselling for daughter
Country House with ALOT of land and pool. I value space, peace, isolation, security and privacy more than a flashy modern pad.
I'd like to train for a doula or something that involves helping folk.
Or set up a cattery. I LOVE cats and mine died 18 months ago.
My partner could jack his job he hates it. He'd set up a fishery. He'd be damned good at it too.
