The BBC have been overwhelmed with complaints about coverage of Prince Philip

Showing the same thing on 2 channels simultaneously.

Now you just enter your email to complain as they couldn’t cope with the amount of complaints.

Get a grip. It’s one days Tv. The other 364 days can be spent watching what you want. I’ve got 70 channels on my free view Tv, as I suspect most people have. Include Netflix and sky and NOW for the many people that subscribe to them, and you literally have hundreds of channels, most of which were running as normal yesterday. I love Masterchef, and it was the final last night, which was postponed. But I have the self awareness to appreciate the Princes death was a big event for most of the country, and so wasn’t going to get hysterical over it not being on.

Miljea · 10/04/2021 13:42

"Some people love to complain but really what will it change? When the queen dies exactly the same thing will happen."

Actually, I suspect some waters are being tested here. I hope that's a part of it otherwise god help us when Lizzie goes, if the BBC, Wisley etc think this level of coverage is appropriate or more to the point, acceptable?

RichardMarxisinnocent · 10/04/2021 13:42

@Bluegrass

If only the BBC had some sort of on demand service with thousands of hours of tv and radio available at a click of a button and at no additional cost to tide people over for a few hours while they are in official mourning mode.
My dad didn't have Internet access (had no idea how if worked and refused to get it) and watching certain programmes live on ITV was his main interest in life. Had he not died last year, he would have been one of the people annoyed by this and without anything else to do to keep busy. I do appreciate he would probably be in a minority and most people at least have accces to lots of other free view channels, and possibly netflix, amazon etc.

@bonfireheart

The pandemic has everything to do with it.

A) they've cancelled all covid press conferences, briefings, communication as we are all supposedly mourning.
B) 120000 people have died, all of whom were loved and pretty sure many of them did amazing things but no back to back coverage
C) lockdown is easing on Monday and we need to be reiterating what that means, how to stay safe, ensure people stay compliant but cos of A that will be hard to do
D) This encourages people to go to windsor/Buckingham Palace during a global pandemic. Pics on the news show people not social distancing, not wearing masks etc.

Excellent points.
canigooutyet · 10/04/2021 13:43

People die every day. Would have had more respect for the BBC if they paid this much coverage to "normal" people who have died and did loads for the community etc.

So glad I got rid of live tv years ago so I don't have to be "told" to mourn for someone that quite frankly I couldn't give a toss about.

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/04/2021 13:43

Out of interest.. does anyone know when radio stations will go back to normal?

Will it be the same for the day of the funeral too?

I found it so bizarre that radio played only instrumentals yesterday afternoon.

Brefugee · 10/04/2021 13:43

So sad that people couldn’t cope with an afternoon off TV to honour a man who devoted his life to public service.

As pp said an overprivileged leech who was lucky enough to marry into wealth. How other many frail 99 year olds do you think have been allowed to have heart surgery?

One channel would have been enough. So what if there are plenty of others? Not everyone wants to watch their output. And since everyone pays a licence fee, they should get that 25p or whatever it is, back.

It's sad for his family and friends. For the rest of us it is a reminder to stay in our lane. It is completely unnecessary in a modern democracy.

Jent13c · 10/04/2021 13:43

I felt sad for the Queen, must be so lonely after sharing 70 years of life with your spouse and that was pretty much the end of my feelings on the matter. I think a nice program on iplayer would have been a lovely memorial for him. I think days upon days of coverage and shut down of TV when its all most are relying on to get us through the days is a bit much.

No I won't complain because I don't really care all that much but I am quite surprised how uninterested I am. I enjoyed the wedding coverage a few years ago but since the whole Prince Andrew situation I am less convinced there is a place for them.

just hope its all finished before Line of Duty

Bookrat · 10/04/2021 13:44

For some people TV is their lifeline. Failing eyesight, isolated by covid, no technological ability to find other options, etc. Gutted for my MIL yesterday. Watching her programmes of an evening is one of her very few pleasures. To take that from her was cruel.

And people here would characterise her complaints as 'whining' and 'selfish.' Nice.

Geamhradh · 10/04/2021 13:44

@ShesMadeATwatOfMePam

So sad that people couldn’t cope with an afternoon off TV to honour a man who devoted his life to public service.

An incredibly privileged old man who lived a life of luxury in exchange for shaking hands and showing his face at events.

And being a decorated war hero for fighting against the Nazis. Which as a privileged Prince he was under no obligation to do.

The other thread urging people to complain was deleted, but interesting points were raised about people being so reliant on watching TV that if their viewing schedule is interrupted, they find it disproportionately upsetting. It's quite ironic that their lives are ruled by that box, yet they complain about what's on that box not being what they want. We saw it with unexpected press conferences etc.

Lord knows how they'd have reacted on 9/11 or should something majorly historical happen.

HereBeFuckery · 10/04/2021 13:44

@expectopelargonium

He was married to the most recognisable, influential and powerful woman on the planet for 73 years. He'd been at the core of the Monarchy for 68 of them.

How often do we have to put up with sport being broadcast simultaneously on both channels? Watching overgrown schoolboys playing with their balls is a bit trite in comparison, don't you think?

Too right - well said. No bugger ever cares that arsing football takes over WEEKS of tv schedules at a time, not to mention the fact that often it's the only sport covered in sports updates on tv and radio (even during 6Nations this year!) but one afternoon of respect and people lose their minds. I want a refund of my tv license for all the mindless fucking football I've had to endure over the years, about which I care so little there is not a measurement small enough to describe it.
PoutineQueen · 10/04/2021 13:44

I thought we wanted our country back, to fly the flag, to be proud of what we are

Proud? I'm embarrassed to be British these last few years.

Do you by any chance have a Union Jack as your social media profile pictures?

Operasinger · 10/04/2021 13:44

@comingintomyown

Unbelievable that people would actually take the trouble to complain about this , it was one day.
Well "people" were obviously upset about it. So you'd better believe it! Of course TV has been an absolute lifeline for many people during lockdown. We still can't go anywhere much and many have relied on TV for company and entertainment. Yes, other channels are available but there were programmes ditched last night that people have looked forward to, with little else in their lives due to Covid restrictions.

If you are one of those people, with little interest in the Royals, then yes I 100% understand why the BBC have had those complaints.

Lauren15 · 10/04/2021 13:44

@Toomanycars

An incredibly privileged old man who lived a life of luxury in exchange for shaking hands and showing his face at events.

If you’d watched some of the coverage yesterday, you’d realise he did a hell of a lot more than that Biscuit

Well said.
YellowPurple · 10/04/2021 13:44

And the point if complaining is what?

How can they change protocol?

Wait till the Queen dies!
When London Bridge is down everything will stop.
People will be sent home from work and her funeral day will be a bank holiday.
Bet those people wont be complaining then

titchy · 10/04/2021 13:45

@StopGo

The BBC is a public broadcasting service and operates under a Royal Charter. It has absolutely no choice but to follow a pre-prescribed protocol. We as viewers have to the option of many other channels, providers etc and ultimately the off switch. Don't like it? Campaign to have the Royal Charter amended or abolished.
That protocol does NOT include transmitting identical content across all its channels. Protocol - one channel only.
Bookrat · 10/04/2021 13:46

I forgot to say: fine to devote one channel, but not fine to remove all choice.

Sanitised music iirc 8am the day after the funeral.

Thank God for spotify.

jessstan2 · 10/04/2021 13:46

I quite enjoyed what i watched yesterday, it doesn't bother me. I can always watch something on catch up or Netflix, often do anyway.

It seems a bit much to be complaining when we only got the news of the DofE's death yesterday. The fuss will die down soon enough.

justasking111 · 10/04/2021 13:46

Did they cancel Emmerdale, Eastenders, Coronation Street?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 13:47

Duty?

Have l missed something? Why would l have any duty to a load of parasites?😂

OP posts:
starfishmummy · 10/04/2021 13:47

I thought it was pretty usual for this sort of thing. There are still plenty of channels - even on freeview - showing other stuff.

Nohomemadecandles · 10/04/2021 13:47

I don't watch much of what's on the BBC anyway. The odd thing in a week. I haven't the inclination to start divvying it up into pounds and pennies though.

This fuss is because of how people feel about PP and about their perception of the BBC politically.

If it is about the TV, find a book to read or a film to watch.

Geamhradh · 10/04/2021 13:47

@Mugginyouleftrightandcentre

Can't believe people actually complained! 😂
They'll be the same sad bastards who cry when the result of Strictly is mentioned on here before they watch it ON CATCH UP 🤣
