The BBC have been overwhelmed with complaints about coverage of Prince Philip

Showing the same thing on 2 channels simultaneously.

Now you just enter your email to complain as they couldn’t cope with the amount of complaints.

Why get so fucking arsey about it? BBC 1 and BBC were showing EXACTLY THE SAME THING. No-one has said that it shouldn't be shown at all, but to have it take over sooo much. There was just no need.

Yes show it so people can watch it if they like, but give us a choice to watch other stuff if we want to.

I say that as someone who's TV wasn't particularly disrupted as I don't watch a lot of live TV so certainly not moaning about missing pointless or anything else.

Bluegrass · 10/04/2021 12:50

If only the BBC had some sort of on demand service with thousands of hours of tv and radio available at a click of a button and at no additional cost to tide people over for a few hours while they are in official mourning mode.

National Mourning protocol set by whom?

When your parent dies you're expected to be back at work after two days and over your "mourning"...

GlencoraP · 10/04/2021 12:50

I cannot understand this , off you don’t want to watch it turn off . It’s one day , one day FGS . Read a book , watch channel 4 or 5 or one of the many ITV channels , do a jigsaw.

So sad that people couldn’t cope with an afternoon off TV to honour a man who devoted his life to public service.

If people want to watch it either by me. But enough with the “a life devoted to public service” nonsense. He was an extremely rich man who enjoyed a life of immense luxury while traveling in style to every corner of the Earth. Perhaps he was a nice bloke but he wasn’t Mother Teresa.

JennyBond · 10/04/2021 12:51

Where can I complain about the number of MN threads about this?

HelpMeh · 10/04/2021 12:51

I appreciate it's somewhat irritating but it seems a bit dramatic and poor form to complain when it's been one day...

Surely the majority of people have access to Netflix, Prime or a plethora of other Sky/satellite channels?

You know there will be high coverage until the funeral has happened. It's not unexpected.

bonfireheart · 10/04/2021 12:51

I do love that the most watched TV programme yesterday was Gogglebox.

Apparently PP hated fuss, so am sure even he'd be bemused by this.

JennyBond · 10/04/2021 12:53

Perhaps he was a nice bloke but he wasn’t Mother Teresa.

He certainly wasn’t. But the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme is pretty amazing and has been pretty transformational for lots of young people over the years.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 12:53

What ‘National Mourning Protocol?’

It’s not about people being desperate to watch tv. It’s about the assumption that it is OK to do this when 1/2 the country isn’t interested but do pay a licence fee.

SleepingStandingUp · 10/04/2021 12:54

I haven't watched it, the only live telly we watch is CBeebies, but it feels a bit icky complaining. It isn't going to last a weeks. They're going to follow their protocol. When it's the Queen they'll do that protocol says, they won't suddenly do a nlNews Hour special and nothing else. So it's just moaning about how an old man's death has inconvenienced you which seems churlish.

A small proportion of people will be housebound with nothing but the basic channels sland no internet so will have their choices limited but it largely won't be them complaining. It's the people missing their favourite shows and objecting on principle even though those shows will be shown again

AnneLovesGilbert · 10/04/2021 12:54

Channel 4 was doing normal stuff as far as I know so there were other free options.

I’m interested in the reason for showing the same thing on bbc 1 and 2, there must be one. I’m not annoyed or inclined to complain but would like to know the rationale.

Dear God, I missed it! Where was the "history in the making"? What happened?

All I could get was repeated programmes about a dead Royal.

Sorry, but really? Some privileged old bloke I never met is dead and that is supposed to be my all-consuming passion? If I am honest I didn't even know there was nothing else on TV oddly for the time I watched TV yesterday I found plenty to watch, but then I guess HBO and SciFi possibly missed the memo about filling the airwaves with requiems.

Notnownotneverever · 10/04/2021 12:55

There was plenty of other choice. We all have freeview. It’s hardly like the days with only 4 channels.
It’s a sign of the times that people can’t cope with not having their personal preference of tv for half a day. Sad really.

AlexaShutUp · 10/04/2021 12:56

I'm not interested in the wall to wall coverage personally, but I recognise that PP has been a big part of public life for the last seven decades and that the media attention is therefore inevitable. I'm sure that there are people who want to watch it.

Surely the rest of us can just turn off the TV and find something else to do?

It seems to be in bad taste to me to complain about the coverage of a person's death. Just don't watch it if you find it dull?

Stellaris22 · 10/04/2021 12:56

Most people do have access to other viewing services.

But the issue is that the BBC showed the same thing on 1 and 2. Why? Showing it one channel would be acceptable, and I'd be fine with that.

People paying their TV license should have a choice of what they view, not having biased rubbish shown on every channel. The CBeebies reminder was particularly awful.

Tal45 · 10/04/2021 12:56

What a bizarre thing to complain about. If you don't want to watch it surely you can find something else to do for a day. How do people cope when it's the bloody budget I wonder.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 12:56

It’s not about missing favourite shows.

It’s about the assumption that the entire population care, when a lot of them don’t give a shit. And we pay a licence fee for this!

OP posts:
Roussette · 10/04/2021 12:57

Whilst I think there should be coverage, would someone like to explain why exactly the same programming was shown on BBC1 and BBC2?
There was no need. Not everyone pays for netflix or other streaming services.
And we're not North Korea. One channel, yes of course, but the BBC was embarrassing in its obsequiousness. They have read the mood wrong, and shot themselves in the foot. And probably realising that as they have had to set up a special site for complaints.

They have ensured that even more people will ditch the licence fee undoubtedly.

Whilst talking about the gun salutes, the voiceover guy says people may remember them being used in more recent events such as the death of Queen Victoria. WTAF?!
I'm not 160!

SleepingStandingUp · 10/04/2021 12:57

It’s not about people being desperate to watch tv. It’s about the assumption that it is OK to do this when 1/2 the country isn’t interested but do pay a licence fee.

Which costs £159 for 365 days. This has taken up what, 2? Even if you add in stiff around the funeral etc you'd be pushing it to say 4 days. And there's still iPlayer.

(159/365)*4=1.74. you happy with a2p refund?

bonfireheart · 10/04/2021 12:58

The Duke of Edinburgh award - yep its great but it's success is down to teachers, youth workers, volunteers and many people who do it for free. Some people seem to think he was single handedly doing all the admin, promotion and implementation of the DOE Award.

MWMWMW · 10/04/2021 12:58

Not everyone can afford the paid options, which I'm guessing is part of why some are so frustrated. They've nowhere to go, nothing to do and now nothing to even see on tv or hear on the radio which isn't PP, or sanitised and mourning approved music.

How many channels are on Freeview? 70 odd is it?
