The BBC have been overwhelmed with complaints about coverage of Prince Philip

Showing the same thing on 2 channels simultaneously.

Now you just enter your email to complain as they couldn’t cope with the amount of complaints.

When Diana died we didn’t have Netflix etc. I went to Blockbusters and hired a load of videos to watch.
I didn’t mind the footage, I just didn’t want to watch it, same with Prince Philip
. It wouldn’t have occurred to me to complain though

Mugginyouleftrightandcentre · 10/04/2021 13:35

Can't believe people actually complained! 😂

FlattestWhite · 10/04/2021 13:35

I almost never watch live television. But it doesn't mean that I don't think there could be issues with this. It's not the 'change of television schedule' that people are having extreme reactions to, which sounds very dismissive, but the fact that BBC is sending the message that people ought to be respectful by not watching entertainment programs. It doesn't matter that they can get the entertainment elsewhere, it's the being told that people shouldn't want that or that it's disrespectful to be entertained, because a member of the royal family has died. It's the abstract concept that is bothering many people, not the specifics of missing Masterchef or whatever.

Why is it more respectful of them to let people watching iPlayer and not BBC2?

No one on here has, as yet, been able to explain why the same programme was shown for 9 hours on both BBC1 and BBC2.

That is my complaint.

Not that the programme was being shown, but the fact that BBC4 was pulled and 1 and 2 showing the same programme simultaneously.

JovialNickname · 10/04/2021 13:35

I'm also really thankful that Covid restrictions haven't been extended under the guise of "8 days off national mourning" , which is what I was afraid would happen when I heard the news. Lack of BBC1 I can deal with!

tisonlymeagain · 10/04/2021 13:35

FFS Turn the TV off then and do something else? Do people's lives really revolve that much around what's on TV?!

NoWordForFluffy · 10/04/2021 13:36

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Yeah, Northern Ireland is much much more important, and it’s practically being ignored.
The lack of reporting about Northern Ireland was an issue before PP's death. Now THAT is something worth complaining about, in my opinion.

Slipperfairy · 10/04/2021 13:36

It's not so much the telly, it's the radio as well. How much sigur ros are we supposed to take in one day? And yesterday was the SAME DISCUSSION over and over again, with a side helping of 80s breakfast tv favourite, Giles brandreth.

Roussette · 10/04/2021 13:36

Can't believe people actually complained!

So many complained they had to set up a unique web page to cope. So believe...

Operasinger · 10/04/2021 13:36

I'm not a Royalist. I just found something else to watch last night. 🤷‍♀️

So did we, it wasn't difficult. However, I think the media seem to think we all loved Prince Philip. Well I didn't I thought he was a privileged, racist.

butterpuffed · 10/04/2021 13:36

It's pretty obvious that there would be loads of coverage, unsure as to why people wouldn't realise Hmm

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 10/04/2021 13:36

@Haydugi

WTF is wrong with people?

History in the making and people moaning about missing pointless Confused

A polite question but, how is history in the making? This isn't a groundbreaking event, it is the death of somebody in the Royal family. His place in history is assured but his death is just a date.

Where was all the coverage of these marvellous things that he apparently did, all this time?

The mawkish sentimentality and overdone grieving of a public who didn't know the man isn't any sort of tribute, it's unedifying.

I'm sure his life and the loss of him will mean much to his family but, to Joe Public, not so much. Prince Phillip had the best of everything, best lifestyle, best healthcare... and lived to a very ripe old age. It's not a tragedy.

Coverage could have been restricted to one channel and the other channels could have done the necessary to facilitate that. All day for 24 hours or a whole week if they wanted, but not multiples. That is the basis of the complaint and people do have a right to complain.

RaininSummer · 10/04/2021 13:37

Since a person can only watch one channel at a time and there are weeks in which they can show Dukey programmes, I think it is both pointless and thoughtless to viewers (licence payers) to do this.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 13:38

Can't believe people actually complained

Except so many did they were unable to cope with it.

Turquoisesea · 10/04/2021 13:38

I can’t understand why people are complaining. Yes it’s been a lot of coverage and probably annoying having the same programmes on bbc1 and bbc2, but it’s one day! It hasn’t impacted me whatsoever as like others have said, plenty of other channels to watch. The people who are most pissed off and not interested are probably the people who have got access to Netflix, Sky etc. My in laws who are in their 80s and mainly watch the bbc probably loved it watching it!

Some people love to complain but really what will it change? When the queen dies exactly the same thing will happen. It will be the end of an era and I think it’s really petty to complain about it even if you don’t agree with it.

Miljea · 10/04/2021 13:38

@LauristonLane

This is about protocols, heritage and respect.

I thought we wanted our country back, to fly the flag, to be proud of what we are...

And this opinion is where the problem lies.

Why do you assume your flag waving little England of 'protocol, heritage and respect' will 'bring our country back? From where? Where has it been?

Britain is a rocky damp island off the coast of Europe. Why 'proud'? Proud of what? It's just a country we happen to live in.

And look where compulsory flag waving leads...

AlexaShutUp · 10/04/2021 13:38

Do people's lives really revolve that much around what's on TV?!

It would seem so!

comingintomyown · 10/04/2021 13:39

Unbelievable that people would actually take the trouble to complain about this , it was one day.

RedcurrantPuff · 10/04/2021 13:39

@CatherineMorland

So sad that people couldn’t cope with an afternoon off TV to honour a man who devoted his life to public service.
It wasn’t an afternoon. It was all BBC channels all day repeating the same tired mawkish old shite on a loop. I don’t consider that an appropriate use of my licence fee.
MarshaBradyo · 10/04/2021 13:40

The mawkishness is insufferable

Yep. The radio stations are the same. Dirge music still going.

All thoughts must be aligned

Agreed. How pathetic and embarrassing that there are such sad individuals who can’t manage without TV for a few hours.

Cowbells · 10/04/2021 13:41

@Endlesscleaning

I’m embarrassed too that people would complain: it was 1 day!

Selfish entitled people with no concept of duty.

Oh, please. What 'duty' to we have to DofE? We are not forelock tugging peasants.
Roussette · 10/04/2021 13:41

@FlattestWhite Your post of 13.30 is totally spot on.

It's not the fact they were showing a whole day of coverage about PPhilip and his life. It was the fact they were traying to insist - by putting it on all channels, and pulling BBC4 - that we should be watching it without fail if we wanted to watch the bbc.

I found it really odd. I would've dipped in and out watching some of it but I want choices, everyone is entitled to choice, when you pay a licence fee.
