The BBC have been overwhelmed with complaints about coverage of Prince Philip

Showing the same thing on 2 channels simultaneously.

Now you just enter your email to complain as they couldn’t cope with the amount of complaints.

I thought the coverage was a bit OTT, being on both BBC1 and BBC2. I expected ITV, etc to show their own stuff.
So, I watched a bit, then turned onto something else, and watched a downloaded program on iPlayer.
Plenty of other stuff to watch - (with the exception that the schedules are currently rather dire at the moment)
I cant be bothered to complain, as I rarely watch BBC anyway.

TempsPerdu · 10/04/2021 13:47

DP and I both complained. Lots of our friends did too. Nothing to do with missing Pointless or Masterchef, neither of which we care about; it was just overkill, totally disproportionate and I don’t appreciate being told what to think or feel by the media. (Actually it’s more being told what I am feeling, with the whole narrative of ‘a nation is mourning’ - no I’m bloody well not).

Ditto the RHS throwing people out of gardens and idiocy like this: www.johnlewis.com/ It’s not 1953 any more, but plenty seem to want to go back there.

Arbadacarba · 10/04/2021 13:47

No bugger ever cares that arsing football takes over WEEKS of tv schedules at a time

This bugger does! Grin . I can usually be found having a moan about that when there's a World Cup/Euro/FIFA whatever on.

Mind you, England matches provide an excellent opportunity to go shopping etc. and have the place to yourself.

Maybe the protocol needs updating then?

For some people TV is their lifeline. Failing eyesight, isolated by covid, no technological ability to find other options, etc. Gutted for my MIL yesterday. Watching her programmes of an evening is one of her very few pleasures. To take that from her was cruel

Exactly. Flowers for your Mum.
People on here saying... go on iPlayer, go and watch something else, go and play a board game, you have no idea.
I do some work with Age UK ... there are many many people like @Bookrat s Mum. They are stuck at home, feeling very vulnerable and to have to watch wall to wall grieving before going to bed is unfair and mean.
The BBC could've put something else on one of their other channels. But no...

your reaction to the mention of people stuck in hospital or in bed says it all...

@CatherineMorland

So sad that people couldn’t cope with an afternoon off TV to honour a man who devoted his life to public service.
So sad people can't empathise with people who have no interest in the royal family, and don't want the TV constantly talking about his death.

Sure it's mildly interesting, but is nothing else happening anywhere??

UrAWizHarry · 10/04/2021 13:49

Anyone defending the BBC able to explain why it was necessary to show the EXACT same content across 5 channels?

Nobody is saying that the BBC shouldn't cover it, but the blanket identical coverage across BB1, BBC2, BBC Scotland, BBC News and BBC parliament was completely absurd.

Most people don't care about the death of a man they have never met.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 10/04/2021 13:49

I watch a lot of UKTV which the BBC has a stake in. Although it was still on air yesterday all adverts were suspended and a black banner demanding me to tune to the BBC for breaking news. A quick flick through the channels showed there was no getting away from it. Even the shopping channels were off air as a "mark of respect", so if anyone is planning to go shopping in the next week be warned...it's apparently "disrespectful".

Kinneddar · 10/04/2021 13:50

@JennyBond

Where can I complain about the number of MN threads about this?
There's a certain irony isn't there in yet another thread being started - to complain about excessive coverage
Atalantea · 10/04/2021 13:50

@Endlesscleaning

I’m embarrassed too that people would complain: it was 1 day!

Selfish entitled people with no concept of duty.

Now I know you're joking
thebillyotea · 10/04/2021 13:50

comingintomyown

Unbelievable that people would actually take the trouble to complain about this , it was one day.

It's not North Korea yet, they still have the right to complain, well done for using it.

You can have a different opinion, but it's a good thing people do bother expressing themselves.

jessstan2 · 10/04/2021 13:50

I'm stuck at home at the moment, Rousette, and watch a lot of TV but there are many channels. I doubt anybody still has only BBC 1&2, ITV and Channels 4 & 5.

It won't be for long anyway.

Ditto rugby in Wales, I just load up my kindle or watch netflix.

And the sneering comments about people watching TV are really unpleasant and snobbish. So what if people are upset at missing MC/golf/EastEnders? These things are important to some people, it doesn’t make them lesser than you.

YellowPurple · 10/04/2021 13:51

@WonkyCactus

Good. It's absolutely ridiculous to suspend the usual programmes on multiple channels for hours on end. I hope they learn from this for when the Queen dies....................

Please tell me your joking!!!!!!
Read my comment above to what will happen when the Queen dies !

CalicoKate · 10/04/2021 13:51

One BBC channel for Royal fans and one for the rest of us. Royal fans don't need two channels showing the same thing. I don't feel the need to pay my respects to someone who went round the country being rude to people

There are more than five TV channels.
Arbadacarba · 10/04/2021 13:52

Failing eyesight, isolated by covid, no technological ability to find other options

You've just described my dad - blind in one eye so nervous of going out alone, but mum has limited mobility & neither of them can drive any more, so he's stuck at home a lot and relies on the Radio/TV to keep him going. It's normally Radio 4 he listens to so it can't have been great for him yesterday (he's not a royalist).

Viviennemary · 10/04/2021 13:52

I agree it was ridiculous showing the same thing on two channels. They could easily have shown something else. People do pay a licence fee for this. Sometimes you think the BBC forgets.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 10/04/2021 13:53

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

So sad that people pay a license fee to watch channels totally dominated by something they may have no interest in.
I feel that way every time DP turns the TV on and we're faced by EastEnders/other soaps, Be A Rich Wanker in the Countryside, Be A Rich Wanker in a Cooking Show, Be A Rich Wanker in a Dancing Show, Be A Rich Wanker in a Sewing Show and endless game shows.

I do think that BBC2 and Radio 3 could have run as usual, but they would have inevitably shoved all the BBC1 shite onto the schedules (so more sodding dancing, shrieking and property/auction shows cluttering up the place), so they might as well stick to the big news item for a bit, as it's frankly, still less repetitive than the normal programming.

UrAWizHarry · 10/04/2021 13:53

Yes there are.

Still doesn't answer the question, does it?

On the bbc news website the front page is entirely about sodding Philip. The fact that there are riots in NI and volcanos going off barely get a mention. Y'know, actual news rather than "an old man has died how sad".

Theunamedcat · 10/04/2021 13:53

9/11 was initially both channels then it was live on BBC2 and updates on bbc1 from what I remember

It would have been better to put it on one channel and keep the main schedule going on the others

Such a shame people use his death to attack others who are human beings and mourning I dislike my ex and his mother but I still sent my condolences when her husband died i still put myself out so he wouldn't be inconvenienced by his own children I even kept my mouth shut when he told me I wasn't allowed at the funeral (I didnt ask to go i had no intention of going either)

I find the whining over emmerdale pathetic really its just one day 🙄

Roussette · 10/04/2021 13:53

I must tell the 90 year old I speak to every week to load up her kindle or watch netflix or one of the other channels. Not even sure if she has freeview to be honest.
