The BBC have been overwhelmed with complaints about coverage of Prince Philip

999 replies

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 12:29

Showing the same thing on 2 channels simultaneously.

Now you just enter your email to complain as they couldn’t cope with the amount of complaints.

As for when the Queen dies - we'll have about two weeks of this

It will be far worse than that. This is a very interesting article.

@MimiSunshine

OP I’m embarrassed for you that you complained.

Go read a book.

Missing. The. Point.
thebillyotea · 10/04/2021 13:15

Shows that a referendum about the royal family wouldn't be as clear cut as the sheep like to pretend...

Prince Philip and the Queen are the only ones who gather the most supporters, and the public is already bored.

I came on to find a thread about this. The radio is back to back misery, sad songs all day long.

This had made me realise I'm actually quite anti-royal. I feel for HMQ I really do, anyone passing is sad. But we've had a year of grief, families ripped apart, and life went on.

I know he's a figurehead but truthfully, I don't think he's anymore special than the doctors or nurses that gave their lives in fighting Covid.

After The Queen passes, I think the Royals need to go. Life doesn't work like this anymore. Inflating one family above all others because of birth, nope.... next.

Arbadacarba · 10/04/2021 13:15

There's nothing I'm routinely watching on TV at the moment so I wasn't personally affected but I can see why others were irritated.

I'd be totally fine with one BBC channel being given over entirely to Prince Philip, but why both? Put it on BBC1, say, and show a mixture of BBC1 and BBC2 on BBC2 to cater as well as possible for everyone.

titchy · 10/04/2021 13:15

They were right to complain. The BBC has a public service remit. That means it has to cater to the interests of the whole population. Broadcasting identical programmes across ALL its channels for getting on for 24 hours clearly doesn't fulfil that obligation. One channel would have been reasonable, not the whole lot.

The availability of other channels is irrelevant - they're not publicly funded and don't have the same obligation as a requirement to receive tax payer funding.

Surely if you think it's disrespectful to complain about the coverage, then you think it's disrespectful to watch neflix or read a funny book or play a game with your family, if you think we should all be feeling serious and sober and reflecting on him all the time

I don't think it's disrespectful to do other things.

I think people who are complaining need to get a sense of proportion. Not the same, and not hypocrisy.

TheVampiresWife · 10/04/2021 13:16

I'm a staunch anti monarchist but I can see why such a momentous occasion deserves wide coverage. What I don't understand, though, is why the same coverage needs to be on several channels simultaneously, or why channels need to be taken off air. Completely ludicrous.

As PPs have said, it's embarrassing and feels like something from another - not better - age.

AlexaShutUp · 10/04/2021 13:16

Do those of you stomping your feet over not wanting your licence fee spent on historical coverage not understand that there is likely many more license payers who do want this level of coverage?

Exactly. There is only so much coverage of PP's death that I can take, because I'm not especially interested in the royal family. However, I am not so self-centred as to think that the BBC should arrange its schedule around my personal tastes, and I recognise that there will be plenty of people in the country for whom this will be a massively significant event. Let them have their coverage for a couple of days, and then normal service will be resumed.

Roussette · 10/04/2021 13:16

We get that with sporting events at times too

No we don't. There has never been a time when an identical sporting event is shown simultaneously on both channels.

Cactus1982 · 10/04/2021 13:17

@CatherineMorland

So sad that people couldn’t cope with an afternoon off TV to honour a man who devoted his life to public service.
It’s not just an afternoon though is it? And I don’t think people would have minded had it just been on BBC1, but it was also BBC2, BBC4, BBC News and all the BBC radio stations as well. We are in lockdown, people are bored and lonely and fed up and their TV is their only lifeline at the moment.
poppycat10 · 10/04/2021 13:17

It’s about the assumption that as a licence payer which funds the BBC l want to watch this crap. And l don’t

This is the last hurrah for the over 50s. The BBC has said they aren't going to cater for the over 50s in future. THAT is a much bigger problem in my view - that they think only the under 50s matter.

Miljea · 10/04/2021 13:17

@expectopelargonium

He was married to the most recognisable, influential and powerful woman on the planet for 73 years. He'd been at the core of the Monarchy for 68 of them.

How often do we have to put up with sport being broadcast simultaneously on both channels? Watching overgrown schoolboys playing with their balls is a bit trite in comparison, don't you think?

expectopelagorium "He was married to the most recognisable, influential and powerful woman on the planet"

Eh? Influential? Powerful? What??

He was married to the most recognisable ceremonial figurehead, maybe... but steady on with the rest of it!

mermaidsariel · 10/04/2021 13:17

@ShesMadeATwatOfMePam

So sad that people couldn’t cope with an afternoon off TV to honour a man who devoted his life to public service.

An incredibly privileged old man who lived a life of luxury in exchange for shaking hands and showing his face at events.

If you’d watched the coverage you would have realised how wrong you are.
corcaithecat · 10/04/2021 13:18

I feel like I’ve been transported back to Thatchers 80’s and it’s horrifying.
😱

But why do they need the same thing on four channels? Why can't they just watch it on one? It's not like it's going to break if millions of people watch it!
whenwillthemadnessend · 10/04/2021 13:18

Read a book do a puzzle play Xbox. Go for a long walk knit bake play a board game. Sit in Mumsnet

Tv is not the only pleasure

PaquitaVariation · 10/04/2021 13:18

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

It’s not about refunds. It’s about the assumption that as a licence payer which funds the BBC l want to watch this crap. And l don’t.
I don’t want to watch (or pay for the production of) the hours of Eastenders produced every year, which I’m sure amounts to more than a few days of coverage of the royals, but I don’t complain about it.
StopGo · 10/04/2021 13:19

The BBC is a public broadcasting service and operates under a Royal Charter. It has absolutely no choice but to follow a pre-prescribed protocol.
We as viewers have to the option of many other channels, providers etc and ultimately the off switch.
Don't like it? Campaign to have the Royal Charter amended or abolished.

Eminybob · 10/04/2021 13:19

@PicsInRed

It's probably worse for some as restrictions mean there is less people can entertain themselves with instead. Shops closed. Cafes and restaurants closed. Pub closed. No travel. Crap weather. If you rent, there isn't even a spot of DIY.
How about the zillion other channels available? Or if you’re desperate for bbc programming (although why you would be is beyond me) there’s iPlayer.
MrsTophamHat · 10/04/2021 13:19

I feel for elderly people who might not have many options of what to watch having to sit through it. It must be very depressing and close to home.

Ilikewinter · 10/04/2021 13:19

*@bonfireheart

I do love that the most watched TV programme yesterday was Gogglebox.*

Ive never watched a full episode of googlebox...until last night!!
I believe channel 4 had complaints that they showed Googlebox and The circle last night.

LauristonLane · 10/04/2021 13:19

This is about protocols, heritage and respect.

I thought we wanted our country back, to fly the flag, to be proud of what we are...

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 13:19

I’m hoping Kamala Harris becomes the most powerful woman on the planet.

At least she’s earnt her stripes.
