The BBC have been overwhelmed with complaints about coverage of Prince Philip

Showing the same thing on 2 channels simultaneously.

Now you just enter your email to complain as they couldn’t cope with the amount of complaints.

I would be astonished if they didn’t have extensive coverage. Of course they are going to have it. It’s the national broadcaster. It’s a national event. Loads of people would complain if they didn’t.

thebillyotea · 10/04/2021 13:20

@whenwillthemadnessend

Read a book do a puzzle play Xbox. Go for a long walk knit bake play a board game. Sit in Mumsnet

Tv is not the only pleasure

you tell that to people who are bed ridden and worst in hospitals. Hmm

It's not just about YOU, is it.

User135644 · 10/04/2021 13:20

Aren't the BBC supposed to be neutral? Doesn't constant fawning coverage break impartiality? Pay respects by all means but don't go full North Korea.

This is way worse than when the queen mum died, and that was annoying enough. At least she never did anything offensive.

Was so irritated this morning to get more of this shit instead of the actual news.

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 10/04/2021 13:20

I''m not surprised that they had so many complaints. It was a complete overkill to have coverage on two channels, why did they do that?

One channel showing a few programmes devoted to his life and coverage of the state funeral would be more than enough.

HeartsAndClubs · 10/04/2021 13:20

I wouldn’t complain, but surely there is middle ground between not showing any coverage, and essentially shutting down the bbc in the name of it?

We have the bbc news channel for precisely this reason, it could have all been broadcast on there, it really didn’t need to be broadcast on bbc1 and 2 at the same time with BBC4 being shut down.

Why does someone pointing that out equal someone not respecting the making of history or not doing their duty? Hmm.

As for the queen, apparently the bookies are already taking bets on how long it will be before she follows. Shock

TeenyTinyDustinHoffman · 10/04/2021 13:20

History in the making?
A 99 year old has died of natural causes. The only real development they could have with this is if they managed to reanimate him.

FTEngineerM · 10/04/2021 13:21

They've nowhere to go, nothing to do and now nothing to even see on tv or hear on the radio which isn't PP,

You have bigger issues that a complaint to the BBC if you can’t go one day without TV/Radio entertainment.

Nohomemadecandles · 10/04/2021 13:21

I've sat between arguing, normally fairly level headed, intelligent adults both claiming the BBC is biased.
One thinks it leans too far left, the other too far right.

I think we've enough access to news and journalism to find a source that suits us these days.

Regarding the coverage yesterday; I get the full evening coverage. Lots of people (who probably don't frequent forums) will have appreciated it. We only know about the complaints.
It'll be back to normal soon enough.
The person I know who was most upset by not being able to watch BBC shows she never watches anyway was also the person who was quick to ask if we got a day off work. So hypocrisy is ever present.

Listener2021 · 10/04/2021 13:21

Which costs £159 for 365 days. This has taken up what, 2? Even if you add in stiff around the funeral etc you'd be pushing it to say 4 days. And there's still iPlayer.

(159/365)*4=1.74. you happy with a2p refund?

SleepingStandingUp Your maths is out by a factor of 100

NoWordForFluffy · 10/04/2021 13:22

@Bluegrass

If only the BBC had some sort of on demand service with thousands of hours of tv and radio available at a click of a button and at no additional cost to tide people over for a few hours while they are in official mourning mode.
This.

We don't have any pay TV services so watched iPlayer (Repair Shop) last night. It was fine.

Meowchickameowmeow · 10/04/2021 13:22

Pro-tip, the TV has an off button.

Cookerhood · 10/04/2021 13:22

What people are missing is that it's not necessarily the coverage, it's the fact that both BBC channels were showing the same programme at the same time, & ITV was similar I think. We had a nice evening of Grey's anatomy. I have complained.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/04/2021 13:22

And it’s not about the money....

OP posts:
MWMWMW · 10/04/2021 13:23

We’re not missing the point.

The point is, people are pissed off that the same programming was broadcast on more than one channel, and programming suspended on another, on a service for which people have to pay a licence fee to watch broadcast TV

I still disagree that it’s a big deal. It’s a few days of coverage. The last time it happened was 2002.

It’s the nation’s TV broadcasting channel broadcasting the nation’s news.

The BBC broadcasts lots of stuff I don’t like, the total hours of which FAR outweighs what’s going on now. Sometimes it broadcasts different things on their channels (none of which like) at the same time leaving me no viewing options on the BBC. So I watch another channel on Freeview (or Netflix, Now or Prime, since I have them). 🤷🏼‍♀️

Just an excuse for some to have a whinge, frankly.

JennyBond · 10/04/2021 13:24

So what on earth have you complained about? That you watched a tv show that you enjoyed on a different channel?

If ever there was proof that some people just love to complain this is it.

I'm not surprised; it's been non-stop wall to wall. Completely OTT.

I feel sorry for his family members having his life endlessly rehashed at every turn. Time to let up for their sake (and ours).

JustJustWhy · 10/04/2021 13:25

@MimiSunshine

OP I’m embarrassed for you that you complained.

Go read a book.

Did you mean go AND read a book?

I don’t feel I am missing the point, I just don’t agree with it. I feel complaining is a complete overreaction to losing a night of TV.
LoveMySituation · 10/04/2021 13:25

I can ignore the TV coverage (although how dare they zap Top of the pops!) but it's the radio that's annoying me..As I live in the middle of nowhere, I only get BBC stations on my digital radio in the kitchen. So now when cooking, cleaning up etc, mourning appropriate(dreary often)music is on all stations punctuated by a dj saying every ten minutes 'there is more news at something o clock' there's only so much of slow music of a similar bpm I can take.. Think radio 1 is the fastest at the moment !

Cactus1982 · 10/04/2021 13:25

Also I don’t think it’s at all comparable to Diana. Diana was a young mum of two who was killed suddenly and tragically in an horrific car crash. It was shocking because no one expected it or saw it coming.

Hotcuppatea · 10/04/2021 13:26

Same on the radio. All BBC channels devoted to a tedious rosta of rent-a-quotes all saying the same thing in a different way. Terrible idea and terrible programming.

justasking111 · 10/04/2021 13:26

Who still only gets BBC1, BBC2, on their tvs. someone show them freeview.

Call me cynical but the lefty BBC have an agenda here non?

ThankyouPeter · 10/04/2021 13:26

I suspect the reason for showing it on BBC 1 and BBC2 at the same time was because the other option would have been a blank screen. The country is officially in mourning and the BBC will have a protocol in place including broadcasters wearing black. I suspect it was more about suspending their entertainment schedule as a mark of respect rather than trying to get double viewing figures.
