Crumpets

Good Morning!

Just pondering as I make myself some breakfast - how do you eat your crumpets?

I pop mine in the toaster until they are piping hot then spread them with butter. The key here is that they are still soft.

My husband thinks this is gross as 'they're so anaemic' - he grills them to within an inch of their lives so they are rock hard.

I know some people have cheese on them, or jam, or marmite...so, how do you eat yours???

@Chickenwing2 I agree that looks like a pikelet - crumpets are similar with holes but not flat. Both pikelets and crumpets have toasting instructions on the packet though!

shivermetimbers77 · 10/04/2021 11:18

Cannot stand a floppy crumpet: they have to be crispy on top or it’s like eating foam , and for me it’s always butter and marmite on top. Yum!

Illy605 · 10/04/2021 11:18

Toasted enough that they are crispy but not burnt and still soft in the middle. Then drown them in butter, preferably Country Life 👌🏻 I might have to waddle over to Asda for some crumpets now!!

Toasted on highest setting with cottage cheese.

I'll get my coat.

@Chickenwing2

Im shocked at this thread. I have never cooked a crumpet, just put butter or jam on and eat them cold.....
Sorry for being rude, but that's definitely not the way to eat them!!

Toasted both sides under the grill(bottom first so top is as hot as possible for buttering)

Toppings depends on what I fancy, but always starts with lashings if butter

  • just butter
  • maple syrup
  • jam
  • jam & (cold) cheese
  • Peanut butter, jam & cold cheese
  • peanut butter & banana
  • marmite

I don't eat them too often, so when I do, I prefer to have them as above. I've never tried them with soup etc. as it's always felt like a 'waste' of the carbs. (I usually eat low carb)

StevieNix · 10/04/2021 11:23

I like them like you do OP! Only very lightly toasted - basically just warmed so that the butter melts Grin

Brahumbug · 10/04/2021 11:25

Top Tip. The butter runs through toasted crumpets (obviously) so stack then on top of each other so the butter doesn't go to waste.

SpiceRat · 10/04/2021 11:26

Crispy on the top, soft in the middle. Usually in the toaster for 1.5 pops. Butter on both, marmite on one, jam on the other for pud haha

This is an absolute travesty, you have no idea what you're missing out on!!!
OliveHenry · 10/04/2021 11:51

@PattyPan

I’m a purist - toasted until they are crispy on the outside and then covered with flora which melts into all the holes. I can barely entertain jam on them let alone anything else that weirdos other posters put on them Shock
You're not a purist if you're using Flora!

Has to be butter. The more the better Grin

onlyhereforthefood · 10/04/2021 12:04

Super toasted, cream cheese and lemon curd. You're welcome.

Chickenwing2 · 10/04/2021 12:28

It wont let me add another picture but I just bought a pack of 6 mcghees crumpets and they are flat like the picture above. It says crumpets on the packet, never heard of a pickelet. Maybe a scottish crumpet is different?

These ones definitely are not to be toasted and it doesn't give any instructions on the packet. Maybe shove them in the microwave for 2 mins to let the butter melt Grin

Iamblossom · 10/04/2021 12:29

@EventuallyDistracted

I put mine through the toaster twice till they are crunchy on the outside but not burnt. Then butter, marmite or soft cheese (or combinations). Never sweet toppings.
This exactly
PattyPan · 10/04/2021 12:31

@OliveHenry as close as I can be to a purist whilst being dairy free Grin I at least used to use flora buttery and then they went and changed the recipe!

Kenneldogsrock · 10/04/2021 12:37

Toasted Golden brown and then lots of butter. I put anything on top depending on what I fancy at the time - jam or syrup or peanut butter. I’ll often have them
With scrambled egg or baked beans for lunch too.

idontlikealdi · 10/04/2021 12:46

They have to be crispy. Flaccid crumpets are beyond grim.

StarsonaString · 10/04/2021 12:48

God level crumpets;

Heat butter in a pan. Soak crumpets in beaten eggs (I also include salt, pepper, garlic and paprika in mix). Fry holey side down until golden then flip and cover topside in grated cheddar or red leicester. Put lid on pan so heat melts cheese while toasting bottom. Serve with sauce of choice.

ShowOfHands · 10/04/2021 12:54

@LizBennet

Waste of steak" was his favourite phrase.

😬 I take it you like it well done? I say the same to my DP, and you’re quite right, it’s very rude Blush

@LizBennet we had a blazing row once because he said it once too often. Because "waste of steak" to my ears sounded like "you don't deserve to eat something you enjoy because I prefer something different". The alternative was that I ate something I disliked to satisfy somebody else's opinion. To this day it makes me cross and I've been vegetarian for years Grin

Pikelets are lovely too but generally, are toasted. I'm surprised to know that people eat them untoasted. I don't think I've seen it before.

PleaseValentina · 10/04/2021 13:57

There is nothing more unpalatable than a flaccid, underdone crumpet Envy (not envy)

That’s the DC’s tea sorted!
BigWolfLittleWolf · 10/04/2021 15:46

I love crumpets.
Haven’t had any ages because they are so calorific.
I toast them so the bottom is nice and hard and crunchy and put so much salted butter on top it oozes out of the bottom.
Rip up the crumpet and mop up all the butter puddle on the plate with it 😍

Missreginafalange · 10/04/2021 15:46

@AngusThermopyle

I toast mine until they are just crispy golden, and then LASHINGS of melty butter.

This, all day long!

LadyDanburysCane · 10/04/2021 15:48

Toasted under the grill so just the “holey” side is toasted until it is slightly crispy then covered in so much butter that it leaks out of the holes (and down your chin).

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 10/04/2021 15:49

Crispy and golden with butter and marmites my ideal. I also like them with

butter, cheese (and marmite)
peanut butter
lemon curd
butter & marmalade

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 10/04/2021 15:50

Life is too short to be eating flaccid crumpets. @Chickenwing2 - that's no crumpet: it's a pikelet.
