Crumpets

Good Morning!

Just pondering as I make myself some breakfast - how do you eat your crumpets?

I pop mine in the toaster until they are piping hot then spread them with butter. The key here is that they are still soft.

My husband thinks this is gross as 'they're so anaemic' - he grills them to within an inch of their lives so they are rock hard.

I know some people have cheese on them, or jam, or marmite...so, how do you eat yours???

Toaster twice, then salted butter and chocolate spread.
Interested to try them with soup.

JeffTheOracle · 10/04/2021 10:23

Warburtons do giant crumpets.

fairydustandpixies · 10/04/2021 10:24

Toasted in the Ninja so crispy outside and squidgy inside. Then smothered in butter or butter and cheese!

Under the grill with lashings of salted Welsh butter.

They don’t need anything else

LawnFever · 10/04/2021 10:30

@EventuallyDistracted

I put mine through the toaster twice till they are crunchy on the outside but not burnt. Then butter, marmite or soft cheese (or combinations). Never sweet toppings.
Snap! I hate an under done crumpet, needs a double toasting
WeatherwaxLives · 10/04/2021 10:32

8 put mine in the toaster on the frozen bread setting. So they're a bit crisply on top but nice and fluffy inside.

Then lots of butter.

Sometimes with jam so it fills up all the holes.

I also like them buttered with soup, they're lush. Also like toast with soup, so much more satisfying than bread.

I tried them once with cheese on, expecting to like it, but it was vile. Not even really sure why, but it was just horrid.

DancesWithDaffodils · 10/04/2021 10:34

Toasted twice so still soft in the middle but not anaemic. Loads of butter added as soon as possible so it all melts through.
Butter needs to go on hot toast too.
DS adds honey or jam to his crumpets, but only toasts them once.

ShowOfHands · 10/04/2021 10:36

Same as steak or toast or tea or scones with jam and cream: it really doesn't matter as long as YOU are happy. DH spent a few years nagging me about how a steak should be done and it pissed me off because he was saying I should like the same things as him. "Waste of steak" was his favourite phrase.

I like crumpets well done with butter and marmite or peanut butter and jam. Also good with poached egg, cheese, avocado and chilli flakes. Had two with roast courgette and mozzarella yesterday.

lollipoprainbow · 10/04/2021 10:40

I like mine crunchy, nothing worse than a soggy crumpet!

PattyPan · 10/04/2021 10:42

I’m a purist - toasted until they are crispy on the outside and then covered with flora which melts into all the holes. I can barely entertain jam on them let alone anything else that weirdos other posters put on them Shock

DuesToTheDirt · 10/04/2021 10:44

Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, lots of butter. For lunch, they're nice toasted first, then put under the grill with some combination of cheese/mushrooms/tomato.

LizBennet · 10/04/2021 10:45

Waste of steak" was his favourite phrase.

😬 I take it you like it well done? I say the same to my DP, and you’re quite right, it’s very rude Blush

Chickenwing2 · 10/04/2021 10:49

Im shocked at this thread. I have never cooked a crumpet, just put butter or jam on and eat them cold.....

Chickenwing2 · 10/04/2021 10:51

Now wondering if I think a crumpet is something different... large, round and flat with lots of holes in them? It would be too difficult to fit the crumpets I get from asda in a toaster....

Solongtoshort · 10/04/2021 10:53

Ooh l love a crumpet l like them firm not burnt. I love sweet crumpets with banana, strawberry and syrup some days and others l like them with bacon and mushrooms or beans and egg. I am just going to make myself two now.

Chickenwing2 · 10/04/2021 10:53

This is a crumpet to me,not to be toasted or warmed at all!

bananamonkey · 10/04/2021 10:56

@Chickenwing2 a raw crumpet?! You’re missing out.

Toasted with salty butter on is my favourite, maybe poached eggs on top. They do go surprisingly well with soup (cheap tinned tomato).

God I’m hungry now.

WeatherwaxLives · 10/04/2021 10:57

@chickenwing2 have a look on the packet - I guarantee there's cooking instructions on it.

NannyR · 10/04/2021 10:57

That looks like a pikelet to me, similar to a crumpet but flatter. I would still toast them though.

lovablequalities · 10/04/2021 11:01

Very well toasted. With (loads of) butter and sometimes honey.

And then recently I discovered invented toasted crumpet with peri peri sauce and cheddar grilled.

This is actually the finest snack/mini lunch ever. I urge you all to try it.

bishbashbosh99 · 10/04/2021 11:05

I put them on hugest setting TWICE! I need them black and hard and loads of butter. Oh god I want one now

EsmaCannonball · 10/04/2021 11:09

Under the grill until they're really well done, then topped with Paysan Breton sea salt cream cheese or a really good jam or chocolate spread or, if I'm having a purist day, proper butter.

Is it true that they don't really have crumpets in the USA? Should we be organising food parcels for the poor souls?

IEat · 10/04/2021 11:10

Need to be crispy otherwise they’re disgusting, loaded with butter and nothing else

LubaLuca · 10/04/2021 11:12

@Chickenwing2

This is a crumpet to me,not to be toasted or warmed at all!
That's a pikelet, and I toast them as well. They're just a thin crumpet, so don't need toasting for long or they end up dry.

I'm intrigued about the size of your toaster if you couldn't fit a pikelet in it! Confused Grin

Isababybel · 10/04/2021 11:12

I like them golden toasted but still soft. I will have them with all sorts, houmous/cheese/jam/beans etc - they are far superior to bread!
