@AgeLikeWine it won’t be a state funeral and COVID measures will also dampen things.

I always avoid Royal Weddings and hospital stakeouts by barricading myself in the house with food, drink & boxsets. Try that. Smile

EternalOptimist7 · 09/04/2021 15:09

I’m the same mosgirl - really feel for the Royal Family, especially The Queen. There was just a montage of photos on the news from baby to old man & I had a lump in my throat. He will leave a big gap.

HeronLanyon · 09/04/2021 15:11

Not a monarchist. Have felt it is momentous in part as a proper realisation that the Queen will likely pass away soonish. That will be mega/momentous.
It’s v odd being in lockdown so whether you are upset or want to grumble or whatever we’re kind of limited in getting it all out of our systems with mindless humdrum chats.

DoingItMyself · 09/04/2021 15:11

A sad loss to his family and friends. He served this country.

I did cry when I heard. 99 is a good age, it wasn't unexpected, but my entire life he's been there, supporting the Queen and irritating people. He was funny, and when they were young she fancied him like mad, you can see it in the photos. So, another stalwart has gone, and the sense of stability people of my generation have known is again undermined.

Rest in peace.

the80sweregreat · 09/04/2021 15:13

It brings back memories of my own late parents and I think that many feel the same when they hear about someone else dying.
My parents were from his generation and if my own dad was still alive he would be upset that he has died today.
It's always a sad day, whoever they are or however old they are.

ImpatiensI · 09/04/2021 15:27

Definitely not a state funeral? I thought it would be.

Zancah · 09/04/2021 15:30

No one knows yet, only that DoE had said publicly that he didn't want one. What he wants and what he gets might be two separate things.

Oblongsquare · 09/04/2021 15:31

Very sad, he was such a stalwart husband to the Queen. 73 years of marriage too. A huge shame he didn't reach his birthday.

CheesyBobs · 09/04/2021 15:32

The College of Arms have confined there won't be a state funeral.

ThanksItHasPockets · 09/04/2021 15:33

Neither the queens consort of the 20th century nor Prince Albert (the last male consort) had state funerals. As mentioned upthread they are reserved for monarchs and a very few others, eg Churchill.

ImpatiensI · 09/04/2021 15:34

@Zancah I didn't realise he said not to have one, that's different of course, I'm sure they don't want to go against his specific wish.

RickiTarr · 09/04/2021 15:34

Well he doesn’t automatically qualify for one, didn’t want one himself, and social distancing is ongoing.

So I would be very surprised.

HandsIntoTheFire · 09/04/2021 15:36

Listening to the bbc radio programme. It’s awful sad Sad

Campervan69 · 09/04/2021 15:38

Very sad news.

If covid wasn't a thing I think The Queen would have ordered one, tbh - no matter his views. Probably as a tribute to him rather that going against his wishes.
Who knows what they'll do now. They might keep him on ice until restrictions ease so they can do something more than a few butties back at the palace for 30 people Wink

ImpatiensI · 09/04/2021 15:44

Oh I don't think so @Zancah, surely she will want to show proper respect for his wishes and I doubt she wants all that stuff going on while she's trying to grieve for someone she's been with almost her whole adult life.

namesnamesnamesnames · 09/04/2021 15:46

I'm not a royalist, however, I respect both the Queen and Prince Philip's extraordinary sense of duty and commitment. Poor HM, such a loss for her. Even at such a great age.

So, I feel rather sorry about it, really. It's the odd thing about a person who has been present throughout our whole lives. It's almost, not quite but almost, the end of an era.

I feel exactly the same.

I think there will be some very interesting television programmes over the next couple of weeks, detailing his youth and ancestry.

Frownette · 09/04/2021 15:49

@SprungisSpringYaY why would you feel most sorry for Harry?

A woman has just lost her long term husband.

Armi · 09/04/2021 15:51

I wonder if there will be the relatively quiet funeral he wanted, then post-Covid a service of thanks and remembrance at Westminster Abbey.

The poor Queen. I do feel for her.

I just read its to be a ceremonial funeral. Which both the Queen mother and Princess Diana had.

something2say · 09/04/2021 16:02

I'm very sad too. May god bless him.

Longtalljosie · 09/04/2021 16:17

@BarbaraofSeville

All the papers have pre-written obituaries for major public figures. The BBC too

They'll have been writing obits and rehearsing news reports for the passing of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh for decades.

I read that the BBC had annual rehearsals and trying on of sombre clothing by senior newsreaders so now I need to put the TV on to see it in action.

It’s not like they change like superman - newsrooms often have spare black jackets and most on-air male reporters have an “obit tie” in their desk drawer. If you look at this morning both Anita McVeigh and Martine Croxall were wearing black already - this doesn’t mean they knew it had definitely happened, but during the later days of the Queen Mum’s life there were several “stand by for news” days where on air reporters would come in in sombre clothing or clothing that could quickly be made sombre just in case

Oh I thought he drew up his own funeral plans and didn't want a state one. Maybe they've changed the plans now, where was this reported?
