The creepy house on the corner of the road

Has an inhabitant! I'm shocked. The garden was ridiculously over grown but has now been hacked down. I assumed it was an estate house and would eventually go on the market but tonight when I walked past there was the top of a head sat on the sofa. I nearly crapped myself. It is a scary looking house and I'm so surprised someone lives there. Weirdly, I'm looking forward to going back past tomorrow. I know I sound hideously nosy but I've been past this house every day for about 3 months and never seen anything until tonight.

Please tell me of other towns that have creepy houses that fascinate.

We used to live opposite this house that was all boarded up and the garden overgrown etc. Just assumed it was empty until the landlord who was XP's friend was over one day and he casually mentioned "Oh yeah a bloke lives there, there was a fire at the front of the house but the back was undamaged so he just boarded up the front and lives in the back of it like that" Confused

Assuming it was the same layout of ours he'd have had to go to the front to get up the stairs unless he just lived in the kitchen? It was weird.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 07/04/2021 22:54

is it a Gatehouse?? I cannot bear them, I always think they are so sinister and creepy looking!

I don't know why cos I have looked at houses next to graveyards and loved them!

covetingthepreciousthings · 07/04/2021 22:56

@CirclesYurt Ha! I wonder if you live in my town as there is a corner house that has been seriously overgrown for what looks like years, and recently been hacked down to reveal the house.. Wink

You'd barely had noticed there was a house there, it was so hidden. I always wonder who lives in it and why it was left so long, as it must surely start to damage the house.

This one. The house next door is immaculate and I always wonder about it

Shock What is the big X thing for?? Is it going to explode from the inside out?

I just went back in time on street view to look at the house we used to live by and it looks like just the upstairs was boarded up and everything was in generally poor condition. Then you zoom to 2015 and it's been tidied up a bit and apparently was sold with the listing saying it needed fully renovating inside. Then there's another listing six months later when it's been completely renovated, garden redone and everything and it just looks like a totally normal house, you'd never know!

I would hate to live next to that.
Kenshi · 07/04/2021 23:16

Haha it will be even creepier if that turns out to be the only time you ever see signs of life and it's all dark again from here. I love creepy stuff! Don't think I coukd live in a creepy house though especially not alone.

QueenPaw · 07/04/2021 23:25

@BertieBotts I think it's actually holding part of the house up Blush although I've been driving past it for 14 years and it's not collapsed. Yet

AcornAutumn · 07/04/2021 23:25

OP why is it creepy?

Excitedforxmas · 07/04/2021 23:59

There’s one by my auntie Sues house which has glass missing from the windows and has never been done up. She thought it was empty but apparently a man has lived in it for years quite happily.

A house behind my dad's looked like it was derelict for years.. Garden so overgrown the postie struggled to get in.
I remeber mentioning it to dad. He said there's an old boy lived there. He sees him about occasionally. How he ever got in and out i don't know. Or what he survived on.
Sad said neighbours often offered tk help and he refused and said he was happy.

Sadly he passed away 2 years ago and a new family have renovated and moved it.
It looks bizzare seeing a house not overgrown garden. Windows that are open with open curtains not rags.

I was always fascinated wondering what it' was like inside

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 08/04/2021 00:11

Yup theres one around the corner from me. Its a bungalow, the garden is so overgrown you can barely see the house. There was an old-ish car out the front (probably from the early 2000's) that hadnt moved since ive lived here. Tyres totally flat, you'd be really hard pressed to move it. One day I was walking my son, went passed the house and the car was gone. No glass or anything on the floor so suggest it had been broken into. Anyone who wanted to drive it off would be really hard pressed to move it anyway since the tyres were so flat and it probably needed a lot of engine jiggery pokery to get it going. Id love to know the story behind it all.

This post has made me laugh as I have just recently watched a film on Amazon Prime called
“House at the end of the street”.If you have prime movies then watch this as it’s really good and made me think that anything is possible .

There was one down the road from a house we rented years ago that even creeped my kids out. It was a hoarder house from hell. The couple died and it was cleared out but man, it had an eerie feeling.

That kind of thing makes me think of the Collyer brothers

Tbh I can relate to them

But after seeing the play The Dazzle - which I think is the best play I've ever seen in my life - I understand them even more.

CirclesYurt · 08/04/2021 00:25

It's not a gate house. It is just the "dark" house on the corner of a road where are the other houses are pictures perfect ones. It always looks dark and sinister. The overgrown garden was full of wildlife. I was quite surprised they hacked it down because I think birds were nesting in there.

It's actually a bungalow so next to the front room is a bedroom with bunk beds. The sofa is all piled up with the cushions except for the one he/she was sat on.

X house is terrifying . How is it acceptable to live like that?

The missing glass... That's just plain strange. It must be freezing!

The whole area had plenty of houses known to be haunted. The house we rented was. I told the landlord and she was like, 'Oh, yeah, have you see her run by the stained glass window, outside?'

Wow! I take it you never did see her?
Blerg · 08/04/2021 00:27

There is one on the the outskirts of my town. It’s an old boarded up newsagents with signs that look like 1990s. It looks empty but apparently the brothers who ran it still live in the flat upstairs. I always wonder how it is inside and how old they are.

AcornAutumn · 08/04/2021 00:29

This is the story of the Collyer brothers if anyone is curious

allthatsinteresting.com/collyer-brothers

I knew of them but of course, Andrew Scott (Hot Priest) in the play gave it sooooooo much meaning.

TellingBone · 08/04/2021 00:37

Didn't everyone have a 'witch's house' nearby that everyone was frightened of playing near when they were growing up?

We certainly did. There were all sorts of tales about what she'd do to you if she looked out of the window and caught you looking. We also had a looming, unused, blackened stone roadside Victorian era church which was terrifying to walk past on dark nights.

No

I feel like I missed out! 😂

QueenPaw · 08/04/2021 00:40

This place is amazing, I have photos from inside too. It should be really creepy but I've been so many times it's not. One of my favourite places weirdly!
