The creepy house on the corner of the road

Has an inhabitant! I'm shocked. The garden was ridiculously over grown but has now been hacked down. I assumed it was an estate house and would eventually go on the market but tonight when I walked past there was the top of a head sat on the sofa. I nearly crapped myself. It is a scary looking house and I'm so surprised someone lives there. Weirdly, I'm looking forward to going back past tomorrow. I know I sound hideously nosy but I've been past this house every day for about 3 months and never seen anything until tonight.

Please tell me of other towns that have creepy houses that fascinate.

there was one of those old huge victorian houses that was on the main road through the village where we used to live , it looked derilict and overgrown and reminded me of the bates motel lol . i was fascinated by it , one day me and my dd then quite little were going past it and i saw the figure if this elderly man lurking off to the side of the window ! , i was really surprised as id assumed it was abadoned , never saw him again when we went past , but a year later it went up on the market , i duly booked a viewing although i am never going to be in a position to own a house unless i have a lottery win , but it was my only way of seeing inside it , it was amazing , all the original tiles , fireplaces , it needed thousands of pounds worth of work . i did give the estate agent a cake and wine for wasting her time and she told me that the old man was a widower , wife died many years back , no children . and when she passed on he became increasingly reclusive and let it go to shit , one friend came every other week to check on him and it was the friend he left it to in his will who put it up for sale , quite a sad story really

@QueenPaw

This place is amazing, I have photos from inside too. It should be really creepy but I've been so many times it's not. One of my favourite places weirdly!
this looks wonderful , i would love to see inside it , must be incredible

Wow! I take it you never did see her?

My folks came over to stay with us once. That was our guest room (well, we tried to make it DD1's room but the first night in she screamed blue murder so I moved her in with her DD2) so in they went. Next morning I see my dad, he always had a sort of extra sense. Asked how he slept, he was always a hard sleeper. He said 'Fine except that damn Elizabeth woke me up.' I was like, 'WTF?' Yeah, he was wakened (but not my mother) by heavy rasping breathing in one corner of the room. 'Either she was 86 or it was 1886, I don't know, but I told her she needed to shut up because I'm in here now and want to sleep.' Then he went back to sleep.

DH saw her run by. I hated that room after dark. The fucking door would never stay shut.

We called our local weird one 'the house of God'. Totally overgrown, could barely see the house at all and privets so wild and bushy you couldn't pass on the pavement without stepping into the road.
As children we used to dare each other to go into the garden and up to the door. We could hear the old man ranting and raving, he was adamant he'd spoke to God and was recieving messages.
At the time it was terrifying and good fun in equal measure to walk by and hype each other up. Looking back now he clearly suffered from some kind of mental illness or breakdown bless him, but the kids were always polite if he was seen walking to the shops (probably out of fear of being cursed).

There's a creepy house on the end of my grandmother's road. It's a very large house, I've been told 10+ bedrooms. It's been on sale for a very long time and no one wants to/wanted to buy it, I've been told it's haunted. Strangely can't seem to find anything online about it such as a sale listing or history. I'm not sure what it's like now but here is a snap from Google maps!

Thanks its indeed wonderful . I could easily live in it .if i had the money to do it up

Happyaswhat · 08/04/2021 08:47

There's a house opposite my flat which is run down, windows covered in cobwebs, curtains in rags, paint peeling off the front door, never see anyone there. Someone has started to do it up but I still haven't seen them.
I'm hoping they'll sell when it's done and I'll be able to afford it (keep on dreaming)

There’s one near where I work, that I walk past every day in my lunch hour. Lovely old double fronted detached, but most bay windows boarded up. Behind it is a sheltered housing complex, presumably built on the land that went with the house. Such a shame they didn’t do it up at the same time to sell it.

In my village growing up there was a derelict Hall with attached ghost and rumours of an underground tunnel to the local Catholic Church. We used to dare each other to go as far up the drive as we could, then run away screaming we had seen the ghost floating towards us. It suffered one of those ‘mysterious’ fires that seem to happen when developers get hold of the land. The stables were converted and new houses built where it used to be.

We lived in a small village. In the middle was a very old farmhouse. It was run down and appeared empty except very occasionally there would be a dim light on in one of the rooms.
It was overgrown and the outbuildings were all tumbledown.

My DP and his colleague were called to the house one night. ( paramedics). They took the guy into hospital and sadly delivered him, dead, after trying in vain to resuscitate him.

A few weeks later, a friend and I saw him outside the house, mowing the lawn/ undergrowth with a scythe. You have never seen 2 women move so fast!

Turns out he came back from the dead whilst being taken down to the morgue. A spontaneous pulse- faint but there and was resuscitated, making a full recovery.

This just added to the weirdness of the house. I always gave it a wide berth- crossing the road to the other side. Apparently I wasn't the only one. Most of the village avoided walking past it directly.

fairydustandpixies · 08/04/2021 09:46

The county I live in has a street of abandoned houses. They're on a cliff that started to fall and the residents were evacuated in the middle of the night. It's so creepy and the houses still have belongings, curtains and cars parked outside even though this happened 10yrs ago.

knackeredcat · 08/04/2021 10:45

Love the second ceiling and fireplace, @QueenPaw - first ceiling looks like it has a masonic symbol on it. Was it a freemason meeting house?

QueenPaw · 08/04/2021 10:47

@knackeredcat it was!
There's a tour of it here

Interesting!

What happened if you tried to lock the door?

I'm loving the ceilings. Don't ask me why. No I'm not going to paint my ceilings black 😂

update

There is a man! I saw him today on one of my many walks. He was looking at me and I nearly waved. He had his dog in the back garden and now I half wonder if all this time he had been unwell and had no one to look after his property. I feel less creeped out and more sad for him.

Maybe he's fine, lives abroad, can't be arsed etc.

There was an abandoned house at the end of our street when I was growing up. All boarded up, overgrown garden. We called it the haunted house, never looked at it in the dark when going last. It was a big Edwardian house, totally out of place with the 1970’s and 1980’s built houses around it.
All of a sudden it was converted into flats and people started living there. There is no record of it being bought and It has never been on sale or advertised to rent so we are assuming the council own it. But why leave it derelict for so long ?

Gatekeeper · 08/04/2021 12:51

whenever I went to stay at my aunt's house I was always fascinated by an ancient Georgian house on the front street. It was falling apart bit by bit and a right mess. About 20 odd years ago I revisted the town with my friend and the house was still there and worse than ever. The front window was broken so after a few lunchtime beers I stuck my head through the broken window
There sitting in the front room was a family, eating their lunch off their knees whilst they watched telly. They all turned round to look at me and I shrieked and then said "Oh I do beg your pardon" before legging it. My mate was prostrate on the ground with laughter Grin

CirclesYurt · 08/04/2021 12:52

@AcornAutumn that's a very good point

Council and church property is often left till someone decides to action it.
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 08/04/2021 14:35

I love old houses, I find them absolutely fascinating.

QueensPaw, I can see why you like that place, its fantastic!

QueenPaw · 08/04/2021 14:46

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe I love it. It's sad to see it decaying more every time I go (we do photo shoots there) but I always find a new spot to look at. It's like a rabbit Warren and there's secret rooms too

TristantheTyrannosaurus · 08/04/2021 14:47

The door didn't have a lock. It was an internal bedroom door.
