...Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace and Immortal, Invisible. As a non-Christian, the lyrical message is probably lost on me but I like the tunes.

Funny OP I was listening to to hymns on Youtube earlier and looking for a particular one :

For years I've been looking for this one hymn that starts

"Oh Lord My God, The Father Of Creation, To You I Turn When I Am Most Afraid. You are my strength in you my soul takes shelter"

And it runs to the Londonderry Air (Tune of Danny Boy)

Found other hymns that use the Londonderry Air but not those lyrics.

Would love to solve it!

WildRosie · 03/04/2021 22:20

According to Google, there's at least eleven hymns based on Danny Boy. You'll need to do some hard listening, Ted.

Easter and Passover being very important for Christians and Jews and churches and synagogues being largely off-limits for now, I wonder how these folk worship between Good Friday and Easter Sunday ?

Many churches have moved services online and are using Zoom to have after service chat. Here is one example for you. www.facebook.com/groups/Malmesbury.Abbey/

I love a good hymn, even though I'm an atheist. My favourites, that I sometimes sing when I'm alone at home with nobody to think I'm a bit odd, are:

Crown Him with Many Crowns
At the Name of Jesus
Great is thy Faithfulness
Give Me Oil in my Lamp
Tell Out My Soul
Nearer my God to Thee
Were You There?

As I say, not religious at all, but went to a school where we had to sing our way through Mission Praise in assembly before being taught the philosophy of Marcus Aurelius, by masters in gowns. It doesn't really leave you.

TedTookVows · 03/04/2021 22:43

@VienneseWhirligig

Hear hear.

Haven't attended church in years and there are MANY hymns I could sing in their entirety without any prompt.

MidgeRidge · 03/04/2021 22:48

I guess you might think it‘s dreary if you don‘t like the minor key but I always loved Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus. Here is love, vast as the ocean, is another favourite. Amd you can‘t beat a good Welsh amen at the end of a hymn - often more rousing than the hymn that preceded it! Tydi a reddish has a good one

Thistles24 · 03/04/2021 23:28

Be thou my vision and How great thou art are my go to ones!

Follow Me
Here am I Lord
Shine Jesus, Shine
There are many more, I just can't think right now. I love singing hymns and Christmas Carols especially in church but unfortunately we haven't been able to since February 2020.

In Christ Alone is a beautiful hymn

FictionalCharacter · 04/04/2021 22:49

There’s a YouTube video of Susan Boyle singing Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace which I thought was wonderful. I’d never heard her singing - what a beautiful voice. I really like that hymn now.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 04/04/2021 22:51

Here I Am, Lord is a wonderful hymn.

Make Me a Channel of Your Peace played as I walked down the aisle at my wedding. Divorced now but I loved my wedding day and that song still gets to me

Thefamilybusiness · 04/04/2021 23:02

Many, I've not been to church since first lockdown and it's the hymns that I really miss.
Here I am Lord is a favourite as well as I watch the sunrise.

windthatbobbin · 04/04/2021 23:09

@TedTookVows I know lots of hymns, and my interest was piqued by this question. I looked in my rather extensive collection of hymn books, but no cigar yet. But.. if you copy and paste your hymn text into google, it comes up with lots of Russian(?) webpages that feel like they're trying to do something horrible to your phone. What's that about..?

AncoraAmarena · 04/04/2021 23:11

Oh I love a good hymn. I'm not keen on carols at all though.

My favourite ones are:

Here I am, Lord
Make me a Channel of your Peace
Let there be love shared among us
Dear Lord and Father of Mankind
I watched the sunrise

But my absolute favourite, that I rarely hear, is Lord Jesus Christ (Living Lord)

TedTookVows · 04/04/2021 23:14

@windthatbobbin

How strange.

I heard it once at a Catholic service and it was beautiful and I've never found it again. It would be like I imagined it had I not had the service book (which was a cobbled together unofficial thing) and I had the book for years and at some point it was like it vanished.

Like an unsolved mystery because the book was sentimental and I can't remember ever binning it.

Devlesko · 04/04/2021 23:21

Not a hymn but wanted to share.
Handel's Messiah last night was amazing, Royal Opera, from London Collusseum. BBC2 I think,
Thoroughly recomend.

PennyArcade · 04/04/2021 23:21

The only hymn for me is Cwmrhondda - more widely known as Bread of Heaven. That’s my chosen hymn for my funeral. I don’t care what else my family choose for my funeral but they all know Cwmrhondda MUST be included as my final wish.

Now you're talking. Heard many a Welsh Male voice choir singing this.

Spine chilling yet so uplifting isn’t it?!

Is that the 'Lord Jesus Christ, You Have Come To Us' one?

If so, I love that.

Also love 'At the Feet of Jesus'.

Considering I'm a hard atheist, I do love a good catholic hymn

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 04/04/2021 23:37

It’s not ‘How great thou art’ is it @TedTookVows?

Nstarr · 04/04/2021 23:38

@TedTookVows

I think the chorus is:

Then sings my soul, my saviour God to thee.
How great thou art, how great thou art
(Repeat) Then sings my soul...

PinkElephant7 · 04/04/2021 23:39

Here I am Lord is a favourite of mine!

HarkAVagrant · 04/04/2021 23:40

I’m also an atheist but was bellowing out Shine Jesus Shine in the shower this morning followed by Morning Has Broken and the first verse of Amazing Grace as that’s all I know. My favourite is Dear Lord and Father of Mankind though.
