Songs that make you sob

I know there’s a thread about breakup songs, but reading it got me thinking about those songs that you just can’t listen to without crying.

For me it’s Disappear by Dream Theater, particularly the live version. I actually can’t even read the lyrics without tearing up. Embarrassingly I once heard it played in a pub and ended up having to hide in the toilets until my face was presentable again.

‘Wings’ by Birdy and ‘Love Is A Compass’ by Griff always make me tear up. Also, the original ‘A Million Dreams’ from ‘The Greatest Showman’ as it just makes me think of how quickly my children are growing up and that I hope they have happy lives and achieve all their dreams.

Abba's 'Slipping through my fingers' - my daughter is 16 now and my son 13, and it's just so poignant.
I'm actually tearing up just thinking it about it.

@lumpybumpylooloo my son was part of a school choir who sang 'A Million Dreams' on TV for Children in Need - every time I hear it I think of his little face belting it out on telly and it makes me sad and proud all at the same time.

Oh, I can imagine! Proud mum moment!! Smile

This one gets me too, I remember my mum telling me, when I was about six or seven, how much it meant to her. I don’t have children myself but even now it takes me back to my own six year old “funny little girl” and the emotions my mum would’ve experienced as I grew up and away from her, and how I was aware of them even at that time because of this song.

I still have a great relationship with my mum, which is lovely.

Afraid of heights by McFly.

Also Morningtown Ride, ever since I was a small child it’s made me howl!

Memory from Cats and Send in the clowns, both get me every time.

expectopelargonium · 03/04/2021 22:30

Just misread your thread title. I thought it said: "Soups that make you sob" Confused

NiceGerbil · 03/04/2021 22:30

Only just begun by the carpenters
And some of their other songs
Something about her voice has a fast track to my emotions. It's such a beautiful voice and so sad even while it's so beautiful
And of course her personal story is so tragic which doesn't exactly help

chocoshopoholic · 03/04/2021 22:31

Who you'd be today makes me cry every time I hear it.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 03/04/2021 22:36

Old Shep.

Toottootdrivers · 03/04/2021 23:07

White Wine in the Sun by Tim Minchin. I'm the only person who can start sobbing in the middle of a comedy gig!

letmepeeinpeace · 03/04/2021 23:12

CharlotteRose90 · 03/04/2021 23:17

@secretmeetingsundertrees snap!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 03/04/2021 23:22

Scarlet ribbons. Both me and dh,though his mishearing of the lyrics as “one night the angels took her” ramps up the bathos.

MrsBerthaRochester · 03/04/2021 23:30

Wires. Not a band I would usually like but this song reminds me of being in the boiling hot NICU watching my 24 weeker die and wanting to scream why were they torturing him.
Debussy Claire de lune, loved it since I was a teen but listened to it obsessively after ds1 died.
Jerusalem. Reminds me of my grandpa.

LaLaFlottes · 03/04/2021 23:35

Kate Bush - This Woman’s Work and also the Epilogue song at the end of Les Mis (movie) has me sobbing!!

JoyOrbison · 03/04/2021 23:41

Toottootdrivers yes to White wine in the sun!!!

If it plays while I'm out in the car it sets me off sobbing big time!!!

scrappydappydoo · 03/04/2021 23:43

When I grow up from the Matilda musical

JoyOrbison · 03/04/2021 23:45

Oh and Everyday Feels Like Summer With You by the Baa baa shop Quartet from the Shaun the sheep movie... Don't ask me why, its just such a lovely tune, and I think of all the little sheep in the film lost and scared, that's another that sets me off!

LucysSkyDiamonds · 03/04/2021 23:53

Oh Holy Night, it's so beautiful. And Katy Perry Firework makes me think of my incredible, wonderful dd and I well up every time.

TheCrowening · 03/04/2021 23:56

I have also sobbed in the front row of a Tim Minchin gig at this song, he commented... Not Perfect gets me too.

And yes also to Wires. I remember really listening to it for the first time, actually taking in the lyrics, while sat in a McDonalds. Seems I have form for crying in public.
