Or cook a fabulous salmon or joint of beef and let people carve themselves just stick it on the table.

Poorlykitten · 02/04/2021 08:35

Love that the 70s cheese and pineapple hedgehog is thought of as ‘impressive’ 😂

Don’t knock the cheese and pineapple hedgehog. All buffets need one!

But it is impressive! First one I've ever seen with an actual hedgehog face. Art right there!
My easy go-to is a massive hunk of runny brie, bunch of black grapes and a pack of oatcakes on a nice breadboard.

Mini pigs in blankets?

Jamie Oliver chickpea salad with feta- always a hit at bbqs and buffets here.

The cheese and pineapple hedgehog is surely the winner here Op. You said you wanted impressive!

Pork pies and boiled eggs? What era are we in?

Gruntwork · 02/04/2021 09:45

Champagne.

Fifthtimelucky · 02/04/2021 09:50

Lots of good suggestions here already so I will only add a couple of others:

Savoury:
whole baked ham or salmon (ham is probably easier to transport)

Sweet:
Summer pudding
peaches or nectarines baked with a 'stuffing' made from amaretti biscuits butter and spare peach flesh
Trifle
Pavlova - always looks spectacular and if you mess up the meringue you can turn it into Eton Mess

If you decide to go for the easy option I can highly recommend the frozen food by Cook.

Their quiche is very good and so is every pudding of theirs that I have tried (which is quite a lot)!

Nigella's Cosmo Cocktail Sausages! Cook your cocktail sausages, and part way through smother with a mixture of marmalade, cranberry sauce and a shot of vodka.

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 02/04/2021 10:38

Savoury:

  1. A platter of fresh vegetables with dipping sauces - satay is versatile and easy to make
  2. Chicken and vegetable satay skewers - skewers are always handy at a buffer because they are single serving and easy to eat
  3. Spanakopita - looks impressive because of the phyllo dough
  4. Cherry tomato and 'ball' mozzarella skewers - see comment above about skewers and
  5. Kouliabac - baked salmon in puff pastry - very impressive on a buffet because when it's cut you see salmon, spinach, rice and hard boiled eggs.

Sweet:

  1. Fruit skewers (pineapple, apple, orange, kiwi etc)
  2. Fruit salad and
  3. Cheesecake topped with fruit.

Oooh I love a gala pie. I think Waitrose do one....

They do: www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/pork-egg-gala-pie/535632-132644-132645

That’s exactly what I thought. That would be my definition of old fashioned food! The sort of thing my grandparents would serve. Each to there own but certainly not my idea of impressive buffet dish
PurpleWh1teGreen · 02/04/2021 13:31

Cheese board.

chicken wings or drumsticks - an easy tart-them-up recipe is to slather with a mix of mango chutney & curry paste.

Veggie/vegan sausage rolls.

Parma ham, melon (the orange one is best) & balsamic dressing (Waitrose do a good one).

Myshitisreal · 02/04/2021 13:47

@toasty280 I'm in the market for a good biryani recipe 😍

EachandEveryone · 02/04/2021 18:24

@tf23

My easy buffet contribution is Mary Berry's lemon and ginger cheesecake (and I don't usually like cheesecakes). 10 minutes to assemble (no baking), fairly indestructible in a quiche dish, add the fruit on top when you get there.
Oh do you think i can cheat and add frozen fruit? I hate the thought of having to buy bag of icing sugar just for a dusting

Dunairbeanat · 02/04/2021 18:36

Thanks Aud I am going to make the noodle satay salad over the weekend Smile

I'm sure you could** use frozen fruit and the icing sugar definitely isn't necessary.

Raspberry cheesecake brownies. Top a brownie mix with a tub of cream cheese beaten with eggs, swirl it a bit and then poke a tray of raspberries in and bake. It looks amazing and people fall on it like locusts. Easily transportable in the baking tray to cut up before serving.

ExitChasedByAnImposter · 03/04/2021 06:56

Chicken and vegetable skewers.
Grilled tofu & vegetable skewers for the vegetarians/vegans.
Take on separate trays or separate with a layer of cling film/foil in between.
Take some dipping sauce - can be taken in a container then decanted if the host wishes.
