The most random things you watch on YouTube

Like so many I do enjoy a good cat video and things like drone footage of beautiful places I don't know when I'll be able to visit.

Lately I've got sucked into watching random mundane vlogs of people walking round their towns. There seem to be quite a few doing this for Blackpool in particular, all going round the same streets every day but the video quality and narrative varies. (Is it some sort of local arts sponsored thing?) I don't know why I've ended up watching these but I keep doing so. There's one elderly sounding man in particular who seems to find joy in the little things such as sunshine over the Irish sea and that's quite charming in a way.

I also love watching things like old TV idents, announcers, snippets of old news, etc. particularly regional.

I watch repair videos so old watches and I am fascinated when they are really old and think about the machinery required to stamp out the tiny cogs. Or they restore vintage bags or shoes. We live in a throwaway culture so it is nice to see some things survive.

I also watch a chap repair and repaint tiny things that actually work like a tiny cooker.

Also this mad woman who makes the most incredible Cosplay outfits that are on a whole other level,

Also people making book nooks, sewing vintage patterns like Edwardian Walking Skirts. I like seeing the passion someone must have for making or restoring. My uncle is a huge train enthusiast, old steam trains mainly. He is like a walking encyclopedia of train knowledge.

DS got me watching this guy that is a beachcomber and fisherman, I grew up by the sea so enjoy them.

I also watch gaming videos of a game I play to pick up tips. I just managed to complete a mission in a game that is played by at least half a million people on a daily basis. Only four thousand people have managed to complete it.

I tend to watch clips of stand up comics, classical music and some music from my teens. DS also shows me fail army but it can be utterly hideous.

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2021 10:06

Pool cleaning-very satisfying.

Views of taking off and landing from airplane cockpits

Reaction videos. There's a brilliant American guy who howls with laughter at British comedy, it's very uplifting.

ASMR. There's a lady who tidies shelves in Dollar Tree and it is the most relaxing thing ever.

Pimple popping / blackhead removal is my favourite, there is a giant subculture of it on YouTube.

My toddler went through the world’s longest phase of watching botany/herbarium videos, I’m glad we’re through that!

Mochudubh · 01/04/2021 10:12

I went through a phase of watching house and garden "hacks" (that were called hints or tips when I were a lass). Then I tried some of them and most were shit and don't work.

E.g Grow your own mushrooms from mushroom stalks or spring onions from the left over root-ends. No, just a slimy smelly mess.

QueenPaw · 01/04/2021 10:17

Reaction videos especially singing ones
Grackle (I find her really chilled, no drama just a nice channel)
All day house cleans

QueenPaw · 01/04/2021 10:17

Oh and American food hauls

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2021 10:19

Ken Tamplin Vocal academy is very entertaining. He watches live singers and tells you about their singing style and how they do it.

Tempusfudgeit · 01/04/2021 10:26

An American chap who unclogs drains and clears flooded roads. Relaxing and satisfying!

Giggorata · 01/04/2021 10:39

I love watching people from rural villages in Pakistan and India being introduced to Google Earth, Street View, VR, etc.Their reactions are full of wonder and intelligent questions.
One old man wept for joy, as he had always wanted to see the Statue of Liberty, and one younger man was fascinated by the construction of the Eiffel Tower.
Recently, they saw a NASA rocket launch, something they had only heard about vaguely and were transfixed by the controlled explosion that looked as though it was all on fire.

knackeredcat · 01/04/2021 10:48

As my OH is a train geek I've also found myself watching driver view videos - there's a particularly lovely journey to the Norwegian Arctic circle. Our cat loves it!

I'm also drawn to Victorian every day life snippets - fascinating and sad at the same time. So many beautiful old buildings lost and such grinding poverty in so many. But like many I'm also fascinated by the clothes, vehicles, etc.

I've always liked astronomy videos - anything from amateur sky watching/photography to the recent Curiosity footage. But the timeline of the far future videos can be a bit of a rabbit hole 😲

I was watching recipe videos by Maangchi. I was then recommended a YouTuber Ashley B Choi’s Channel. She is a former K Pop idol who lost some members in a car accident. Watched a few of her videos, ended up watching Get Real which was recommended by YouTube. Then recommended university student Yoora Jung and her sister’s channel Ella’s Life. I disappear in a wormhole of recommendations so I am constantly clearing my history or else I’ll waste hours doing this.

PlayDohDots · 01/04/2021 10:53

I love those video walk channels! Saved my sanity during lockdown. Particularly like ones in Japan which feels like you're on holiday. Most have incredible production values and are wonderful to watch just before bed to wind down. Also like urbex & dead mall tours which is similar but a bit creepier.

There's a new trend of anonymous vlogs mixed with ASMR, which show domestic things like cooking, cleaning, organising without anyone talking in the camera or even seeing their face. Also very immersive and relaxing.

Hyperion100 · 01/04/2021 11:01

ASMR shoe shine videos

"Anglo shoe shine" puts me in a state of deep relaxation. No idea whay.

Put your headphones on and zen the f*ck out!

ShirleyPhallus · 01/04/2021 11:01

Top British moments makes me laugh a lot
Fail army good
I’ve recently started watching people decorating cakes

I absolutely HATE ASMR. It sounds to me like someone tickling my eardrums, not in a good way.

knackeredcat · 01/04/2021 11:10

@PlayDohDots - I LOVE dead mall footage. I like the juxtaposition of the shiny happy ads announcing them opening with what they have become. The ones stuck in a 70s/80s timewarp are fascinating. Would love to see more UK centric ones but I suppose our shopping centres don't compare to US malls in terms of size.

Urbex and abandoned creepy houses are always good to watch. But the poignancy of relatively untouched old houses is sad. I always try to find back stories.

The lady that tidies shelves in Dollar Tree is classed as ASMR but nothing like the assault on the eardrums type I hate those.
ParkheadParadise · 01/04/2021 11:39

I looked at video about how to gift wrap a bottle
Bloody hours later I was still watching videos about how to wrap all your gifts 😂😂

Bettina500 · 01/04/2021 12:56

I watch a lady who videos her day to day life, housework, and orders loads of clothes, tries them on and returns most of them. She also reviews her designer handbag collection and did shop with me videos pre lockdown.

I like blackhead removal videos, come thrift with me, hairdresser reaction videos, car reviews (especially of cars I own/ed) and videos of places I'd like to see.
But of an eclectic mix Grin

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 01/04/2021 12:57

I found myself watching someone making those jellies with flowers in.

Why would anyone want to eat that is beyond me, watch I did nonetheless.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/04/2021 13:00

Disney food vlogs.
I've never been to Disney and don't want to go either but I'm weirdly obsessed with the food and know the menus from all of the restaurants

Pumpkinstace · 01/04/2021 13:06

Rollercoaster pov vids plus theme park vlogs.

Surprise trip reveals.

People trying colour blind glasses/ hearing aids for the first time

Redcherries · 01/04/2021 13:06

@Mochudubh we had some great success with spring onions last year, had to change the water a few times but they grew really well.

I watch metal detecting, Mr Ballen (tells stories about strange stuff) history and archeological documentaries, scary videos, cooking shows. Its a bit endless but its kept e sane shielding. I tend to go through cycles.

Gingernaut · 01/04/2021 13:11

As well as restoration videos in general, pimple popping and pop videos, I've found a Midlands watchmaker who restores watches.

FailArmy is funny too.

Redcherries · 01/04/2021 13:12

@IHaveBrilloHair me too, plus the ones about rides etc. I hate rides.
