Anglesey

We have a long weekend in Anglesey booked for the end of June. It was moved from last year and it's looking like it should go ahead this year...

We are going to be walking some of the coastal path but are looking for ideas of things to do on our rest days.

If Beaumaris Castle is open then that's a lovely visit.

Dugee · 31/03/2021 12:55

There is a national trust house and gardens that we liked. Typing on the run but it's called something along the lines of Plas Newfydd. I'll look it up for you later.

Sennedd · 31/03/2021 12:58

Plas Newydd.

Dugee · 31/03/2021 13:01

Thank you. I struggle to spell Welsh words without looking them up. I think the language sounds beautiful and listening to spoken welsh is always a nice thing about visiting Wales.

AlexaRain · 31/03/2021 19:01

Thank you. I will have a look at those.

Dingle Nature Reserve was a nice couple of hours too. Anglesey is beautiful OP, I hope your holiday goes ahead this year.

Newborough Warren and Llandwyn Island
Parys Mountain
Beaumaris
Eglwys St. Cwyfan - a church on an island in the middle of the sea at high tide, go at low tide and walk across to it

cataclysmiclife · 01/04/2021 08:00

Drinks/food at red wharf bay
Newborough beach

AlexaRain · 01/04/2021 08:07

Thanks all. I'll add these in to my list and do some reading up over the weekend.

I'm really hoping this can go ahead too. It was one of 3 holidays that were moved / cancelled last year.

Menai bridge had some nice restaurants too

Pearbear · 01/04/2021 14:03

Beaumaris is nice for an afternoon wander or a boat trip out to Puffin Island. Penmon Point lighthouse is a few miles down the road and worth a drive out to.

AlexaRain · 02/04/2021 11:40

Thank you!

I'm busy reading up on this lot. So looking forward to this holiday and really hope it goes ahead this year.

Sea zoo if it’s open, the lady who owns it also owns the Hal y mon sea salt company.

Ah I used to live in Bangor and spent a lot of time around Anglesey! Admittedly this was 20 years ago but I can suggest a few things!

Greenwood Family Park is lovely in Felinheli. Short drive from Anglesey as it's on the mainland but a good day out with kids. I used to work there when I was in my early 20s!

Someone mentioned the sea zoo already - that's a good trip out and it used to have a farm near it that you could also visit. Foel farm I think from a quick google. They used to make chocolate on site!

There was butterfly place called Pili Palas that looks like it's still there.

Rhosneigr is a lovely beach but can get busy. Llandonna is also nice and I've seen seals off the coast there! Back to north wales you have Abersoch which used to be excellent for surfing and body boarding if that's your thing?

Beaumaris used to have lovely restaurants and the marina to walk around. Caernarfon on the mainland has a castle that's worth a visit.

Your heading in to Welsh as a first language territory as well so remember people aren't being rude - they are just speaking the only language they know in some cases! It's a beautiful language and as with any country a few phrases can go a long way!

MrsFin · 05/04/2021 11:32

they are just speaking the only language they know in some cases!

Or at least that's what they want you to think Wink

I'm pretty sure there's not a soul alive these days who only speaks Welsh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

There was 20 years ago when I lived there! When I worked at Greenwood I had a few older people come in who didn't speak enough English to communicate with me and my primary school level welsh. We got by or we would find one of the better welsh speakers. Regardless, it is a first language area and people shouldn't be made to feel they are rude for not speaking English initially. We wouldn't say the same if it were France or Italy etc.

Did you go to Anglesey OP? We are considering going in June or September.

Tambora · 02/05/2021 13:38

I'm amazed nobody has mentioned a visit to Llanfairpwllgwyngllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Thank you, will have a look.

AlexaNeverListens · 02/05/2021 13:44

Moelfre is really pretty and has the most amazing ice cream parlour there.

Lligwy is just up from Moelfre and is also beautiful.

Newborough, Beaumaris, The Dingle, Plas Newydd, are all favourite days out for us.

I hope you enjoy your trip, it's an amazing place!

ErrolTheDragon · 02/05/2021 13:46

It's pretty easy to get to the north Wales coast or into Snowdonia from Anglesey - massive choice of castles, walks, beaches etc. It's really one of the best areas in the whole U.K. for having lots of things to do, in all weathers - though Anglesey seems to have a generally nicer microclimate.

On Anglesey itself, apart from the more obvious attractions we very much enjoyed the little geology museum stonescience.co.uk

And of course South Stack for the birds and lighthouse.

ChikiTIKI · 02/05/2021 13:47

Butterfly Palace is pretty cool. Would recommend.
