Here it's Ponden Mill, Bon Marche, Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Peacocks. All part of the same group but all closing down in the same small town.

AaronPurr · 31/03/2021 10:11

Peacocks and Bonmarche here, as well as several on your list.

Not WH Smiths though. They're like a cockroach after an apocolypse, bloody indestructible. Grin

mum2jakie · 31/03/2021 10:12

Thornton's too as well as a couple of independent shops and cafes.

ssd · 31/03/2021 10:22

God yes I'd forgotten those shops mentioned.

We have four "independent" non food shops in our small village, 3 have closed for good. The 4th is hanging on by a thread. These are small shops that could have continued trading had they been allowed to. They could have enforced social distancing rules (family owned, so staff are already their household "bubble"), and could have had a 1 in or 2 in policy to stop the shop being busy. In fact, even in normal times, there'd only ever be 1 or 2 customers in at a time. They'd put up screens for the short period of time they were allowed to trade, had hand sanitisation station at the door etc. But no, despite being ultra low risk, they had to close during lockdowns.

And then they have to stand and watch the "food" shops nearby who are allowed to open despite having staff not part of a household bubble, more customers, etc.

The govt rules have done massive damage to the retail sector. There should have been exemptions for smaller shops that could social distance.

Totally agree

Debenhams and Topshop. Unfortunately they are both fairly large stores opposite each other. John Lewis in next town.

IggyAce · 31/03/2021 15:11

Argos are closing some stand alone stores and putting them in the Sainsbury’s.
ssd · 31/03/2021 15:34

Our Lakeland has gone.
Also in our high street Paperchase, Hotter Shoes and Kiko Milano makeup. Jack Wills, EWM, Whittards and some others I’ve forgotten.

UnderOverGround · 31/03/2021 15:42

What is going to happen to these empty stores? I live near a 'mall', commuter town so without the draw of the designer shops, the very idea of these now seems so 90s. Will it become a mix of bargain shops and luxury boutiques?

Our Debenhams is/has shut, I'm sure there will be many others.

Timper · 31/03/2021 15:44

John Lewis
Debenhams
River Island
Topshop
Dorothy Perkins
Oasis
Warehouse
Molton Brown
Must be others I’ve missed too.

StanfordPines · 31/03/2021 15:44

You say that about M&S and while I wouldn’t want them to close I did notice the other day that they were open with people buying clothes but Primark opposite was shut. Now I’m not a lover of Primark but that is unfair.
TheQueef · 31/03/2021 15:46

They were talking about turning our JL in to flats @UnderOverGround
There are blocks of offices sitting empty already in the TC it's only the takeaways surviving.

Bluebird2021 · 31/03/2021 15:47

Couple of charity shops here have gone too

Even a vape shop!...gone. Escape rooms have closed down too though not really retail

1moreglassplease · 31/03/2021 15:48

We've lost:

Debenhams - our one remaining department store
TopShop
Monsoon Accessorise
Flying Tiger
M&S closed their store a couple of years ago
BonMarche closed a few years ago in my town due to high rents
Next - town centre store closed so these are now all out of town

PickAChew · 31/03/2021 15:50

In our city centre, over the past year:

All the phone shops
EWM
Smiggle
Psyche
Cotswold outdoor
Fatface
Clinton's
M&co
Topshop
Thorntons
Plus some localish shops like esquires coffee, scorpio shoes and others I've not paid much attention to. There were already lots of empty units so it looks desperate.

Our local retail park is almost as bad
Outfit
Oak furniture land
Frankie & Bennies (burger priest now in that unit)
Laura Ashley

We have a couple of recently b oarded up pubs in our locality. One of them is no loss but the other was a proper real ale pub.

user1493494961 · 31/03/2021 16:18

Debenhams, Bob Marche, Poundstretcher, Argos, Shoezone, Holland & Barrett, Peacocks, Top Shop/Dorothy Perkins

A few small local shops. W H Shit can get to fuck, I wish they would just leave.

emmathedilemma · 31/03/2021 16:33

A local independent cafe has closed but other than the big high street brands like Debenhams that have been in the news I'm not sure.
I think some of the pubs have been boarded up for security?

AngeloMysterioso · 31/03/2021 16:55

John Lewis
Topshop
Crew
Smiggle
Jack Wills
Gap & Gap Kids
Polarn o Pyret

Then food & drink wise

Zizzi
Carluccio’s
ASK Italian
A lovely little independent baby cafe
Independent wine bar that had only opened in November ‘19

That’s just off the top of my head, there’s probably loads more
