Debenhams, Thornton’s and Outfit won’t be reopening here.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 31/03/2021 17:09

Oh I love flying tiger.

Sandgrown1970 · 31/03/2021 17:14

Debenhams (entire shopping centre built around the store).
Topshop
Clarks
Peacocks
Bon Marche
WH Smith
Argos
Thorntons
Poundstretcher
Miss Selfridge
Burton

Had already lost Wallis, DP, H&M etc. Loads of independent cafes and some small shops have closed too. It was already awful for shopping. Lots of locals would go to the Trafford Centre instead but that’s in trouble too.

Hate online shopping. With a passion.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 31/03/2021 17:16

The obvious ones...
Pizza hut
Pizza express
Bon Marche
Peacocks
One of Poundland stores
Argos Standalone

There's lots of empty shops.

While I get the thinking around off licences... Majestic Wine and Barbados share a car park. So you can buy expensive wine but not cheap children's clothes....

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 31/03/2021 17:17

Barnados Charity shop, not Barbados!

cheerfulpanda · 31/03/2021 17:23

We’ve lost two WH Smith’s, one during the pandemic and one about a year before so they must just be popular in your areas!

We’ve lost or are losing:
Cafe Nero
Joy
Runners Need
WHSmith
Burger Place (non-chain)

We also had a habitat that’s recently become a habitat “outlet” post-Argos takeover.

It'll be really sad once shopping malls open and half the places are closed. As a retail worker, it feels like armageddon.
I keep thinking of my mum and MIL, they were of the older generation who went into town most Saturdays, just for a wander. They would have a cup of tea and a scone somewhere like bhs cafe, or similar. Most of these places are closed now. Where do the wee auld wimmin go now? They don't want trendy or woke. They want a good cup of tea and a nice chat with the person at the next table.

It makes me feel so sad.

@ssd my DM Can't wait to have coffee and cake in M&S. Its not in town now, but a shopping park...

ssd · 31/03/2021 17:55

My mum or MIL didn't drive, so it was public transport into town in those days. There weren't any retail parks when they were alive.

But they would have gone to m&s cafe in town quite happily, i enjoyed going there myself when i could.

Peacocks
New Look
We'd already lost our local M&S

We have gained a Lidl and a couple of cafes though.

Just spotted that our branch of Shoe Zone is also closing down.

ShakeaHettyFeather · 03/04/2021 17:47

We'd lost QS, Maplins, Clarks, the big independent stationers, and the greengrocer in the couple years pre Covid. The only place to buy children's shoes is Shoe Zone, unless the half-a-dozen pairs chucked around Tesco happen to fit. If Peacocks goes, only independent shops sell clothes, mostly cheap ones for teenagers/twenties, or half an aisle in the supermarkets.

Covid just accelebrated closures of branded clothes stores and non-branded cafes (Costa moved in 6 months ago). WHSmiths will survive because there's a post office in it and no-one else in town sells new books.

TheChosenTwo · 03/04/2021 18:24

I genuinely have no idea Confused
How do you all know?!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 03/04/2021 18:30

Because the Shop names have gone and they have To Let signs on. Others have been in local news
zukiecat · 03/04/2021 18:34

Shops aren't opening here until the 26th of April, so not too sure who will be opening again.

Debenhams and John Lewis are definitely not re-opening. Bon Marche have already gone, I think Paperchase will be gone,

I hope WH Smith doesn't close, I love that shop! An absolute must whenever I'm in town.

TheChosenTwo · 03/04/2021 18:36

Oh okay, thanks.
I’m not near our ‘local’ town centre and we don’t get a local newspaper anymore, haven’t for about 20 years! I watch regional news on the tv but haven’t noticed anything mentioning shops in our town.
Interested to see what’s closing in other areas. Such a shame but the high street dying off has been coming for years with the invention of online shopping and the desire for convenience. This has just sped up the process for so many retailers. High rental costs for premises and low footfall.

nancy75 · 03/04/2021 18:40

Similar to most, Debenhams, Top shop + other Arcadia, cafe rouge, Argos, various smaller shops.
I can’t imagine what the high street is going to be like, our Debenhams and Topshop are both massive stores, we already have a huge Primark so I can’t see what else would go in those units.
