I just bought these but they piss me off.

They are to go over my dd nappy for under skirts. But the name really pisses me off. Why can't they be called 'under skirt shorts'? There's no need to be judging two year olds on their levels of modesty.

OP posts:
MrsHusky · 29/03/2021 17:24

because its generally unacceptable in society to have your flaming underwear on show.

good grief.

Its not about hiding genitals, but allowing girls to do whatever without flashing their knickers.

MrsHusky · 29/03/2021 17:28

i'm nearly 40, when i was at school we either wore gym knickers or tucked our dresses up the leg of our knickers.. and were constantly being told to stop flashing our pants and cover ourselves.

I have zero issue in 'modesty' shorts if they allow girls the freedom to do everything they can in shorts/trousers, while still wearing a dress, and not being told 'cover your pants.'

IF a little boy ran past with his shorts at half mast you'd tell him to pull them up!

jessstan2 · 29/03/2021 17:30

@frogswimming

It's the word 'modesty' I don't like. Girls climbing trees shouldn't have to think about being modest.
They would usually be wearing shorts or joggers if climbing trees. If they were wearing a skirt I don't suppose they'd want to be showing their knickers to passers by. That is what modesty means and applies to both sexes. I see nothing wrong with the word.

Oh come on. You can’t normalise children showing their genitals to all and sundry while going about normal school activities. That’s just incredibly inappropriate, and I’d say exactly the same thing about a boy having their penis or testicles out. How uncomfortable for the staff apart from anything else. Pants showing is one thing, but the pants should be covering the appropriate area.

Beat me to it. I've worked in a primary school and more recently a preschool and it's not in any way common place for a girl to sit with her 'labia hanging out' for all to see! Jesus wept.

On the basis that I've never even seen that happen, underpants would apparently do an adequate job. If it didn't, and it was noticed, I would think most staff working with young children would immediately make some sort of subtle move to re-position the child or get them up to rearrange their underpants or something, put on something different if it was the pants that were the issue.

Safeguarding in EYFS these days certainly doesn't allow for genitals casually hanging out of pants!

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

Maybe they should just bring back the sort of very generously cut navy school knickers we had in the Very Olden Days. I can guarantee that a glimpse of those wouldn’t get even the grubbiest old perve’s pulse racing. IIRC some of them even had a pocket for your handkerchief.
First year at Uni, my boyfriend kept going on about how he really wanted to see me in my school gym kit with navy knickers. Confused

Imagine his disappointment!!!

Big thick pants, elasticated at the waist with a double gusset.

He kept saying "Are you sure this is what you used to wear at school?" He really wouldn't have it.

ForwardRanger · 29/03/2021 17:37

You could suggest the brand re-name? Here they're just called underwear.

MrsHusky · 29/03/2021 17:37

ours were bottle green, and fondly known as 'greenies'
lovely.. Grin

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/03/2021 17:39

We had bright purple gym knickers. In 1999 we successfully petitioned for shorts instead. We ran in the local parks and roads In themup to the age of 16 before that with tucked in t-shirts..
Hardly modest!

5zeds · 29/03/2021 17:40

I’d call them trunks. Boxers gape so are useless if you are just looking to cover your bits. I prefer them as skirts are uncomfortable and unnecessary IMO

IntermittentParps · 29/03/2021 17:41

IF a little boy ran past with his shorts at half mast you'd tell him to pull them up!

The difference is that with shorts, they're just not being worn as intended and it's easily fixed. With a skirt/dress there's no real equivalent of 'pulling them up'. So the question is, do girls stop wearing skirts/dresses or do people just not worry about girls' underwear showing when they do?

MrsHusky · 29/03/2021 17:42

any one else recall the dreaded 'forgot my pe kit' and having to pull someone elses gym knickers from the lost property.

katy1213 · 29/03/2021 17:43

I'm ancient - but back in the day they were navy blue knickers. We hated them!

MrsHusky · 29/03/2021 17:44

so if a girl walked past with her skirt tucked in her knickers, you wouldn't tell her to pull it straight because she had her knickers on show?

As i said, its not about wearing outer clothes appropriately, whatever your age, its unacceptable to have your knickers/pants/underwear on public show.

Modesty shorts allow girls who prefer to wear skirts/dressed to still be able to do all the stuff they would in trousers/shorts without having to be constantly told to stop flashing their undies.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 29/03/2021 17:46

What's wrong with modesty? Its not a bad thing. I assume you don't go flashing your knickers to all and sundry? Do children not deserve modesty too?

JustLyra · 29/03/2021 17:46

If companies just made decent knickers that didn’t ride up/fall down/have shite elastic/stayed in place shorts like these and the likes wouldn’t be needed.

The difference in flimsiness in children’s underpants from when my elder 3 (21 & 19) were little to now I’m buying it for my younger two is massive.

GADDay · 29/03/2021 17:48

And in the normal world we call them pants, shorts, bike pants.

My DD wears knickers with a pair of bike pant style shorts.

Modesty pants sounds like something from Little House on the Prairie.

Goatinthegarden · 29/03/2021 17:49

I’m a teacher....when I wear a dress with bare legs in the summer, I wear cycling shorts underneath. I live in fear that I’ll fall over in the classroom (hasn’t happened yet) and flash my knickers to the whole class.

Also means I can run around the playground on a whim.

Not sure why a two year old would wear them with a nappy, but ideal for older girls that want to wear a dress, be active and not give a toss.

Modesty knickers is pretty old fashioned, but the name immediately communicates their purpose.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 29/03/2021 17:52

Quite honestly I've seen a number of little girls in skirts legs akimbo with practically everything on display I can understand why they are called modesty shorts. They would look much better with shorts on under their skirts. I wear them to stop my fat thighs chafing.

ittakes2 · 29/03/2021 17:54

I think you are over thinking this - so if they are NOT worn for modesty what are they worn for? Why would a child wear them if they are not trying to be modest? Surely its OK to tell it how it is?

Therarestone · 29/03/2021 17:57

@Twinkie01

How many pieces of material do girls need between their vulvas and the outside world to feel comfortable these days?
Well boys have 2 layers between their privates and the outside world. So with these so do girls.
IntermittentParps · 29/03/2021 17:59

Modesty shorts allow girls who prefer to wear skirts/dressed to still be able to do all the stuff they would in trousers/shorts without having to be constantly told to stop flashing their undies.

So why don't people just stop constantly telling little girls to stop flashing their undies? I agree for adults it's not OK to show underwear, but kids and adults have different social rules –for this and for many things. What troubles me about this is the idea that a little girl might be being 'immodest'; it's ascribing to little girls an age-inappropriate morality.

Chaotica · 29/03/2021 18:05

I guess I'm one of the minority, the 60s and 70s kids on here who were brought up not to bother about flashing our knickers in the playground at primary school. Probably a good thing because we did PE in knickers and vest 3 times a week.

While I can see the issue for older girls and boys, the idea that young girls (or their parents) should have to worry about showing their underwear is quite depressing. That said, I'm a big fan of trousers and shorts for girls.

Chaotica · 29/03/2021 18:06

Exactly @IntermittentParps (what a name BTW!)

roguetomato · 29/03/2021 18:09

Weird. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Don't complain after you bought it. You can find alternative with different name quite easily.

Eckhart · 29/03/2021 18:09

@Northernsoullover

Over-underpants?
Love this.

Modesty shorts are worn by both sexes when they might reveal something. When wearing a hospital gown, for example. It's just what the garment is called.
