We have been watching Call My Agent which we like a lot, but Saturday is movie night.

So I would like to watch a French film with subtitles to keep up our practice. Please recommend me something good!

@Aquamarine1029

Tell No One. Love this movie.
This!! A fantastic film.

I also recommend Amelie and Delicacy, both featuring Audrey Tautou, and both very good although in different ways.

RhubarbTea · 27/03/2021 22:39

Oh, and La Haine is excellent. Vincent Cassel is amazing!

AFingerofFudge · 27/03/2021 22:51

Bienvenue chez les cht'is is very funny.
Lupin - excellent
Les Amants du pont neuf- oldish but brilliant
Panique au village- possibly Belgian, but French language. Animation/ genius!

Another vote for Portrait Of A Lady On Fire.

Le chateau de ma mere
Bienvenue chez les ch'tis
La grande vadrouille
The Lacemaker

Barkleyspaubles · 28/03/2021 06:13

I second Diving Bell.

clearsommespace · 28/03/2021 06:36

Loads of great sugestions. I'll add

Grace à Dieu (about child abuse in Catholic church)

Antoinette dans les Cévennes (with Laure Calamy who plays Mathias' lover Noémie in 10%)

I want to see 'J'accuse' about the Dreyfus affaire. Got good reviews.

Blyatiful · 28/03/2021 06:46

Pauline At The Beach. Very French, lots of long conversations about being in love, combined with some mind games.

Belgian/Romanian rather than French, Alone in My Marriage/Seule Dans Mon Mariage. Excellent film about a young Roma woman who does online dating and moves to Belgium to improve her life.

Blyatiful · 28/03/2021 06:48

Seule a mon Mariage... 🤦🏼‍♀️

My family really liked Heartbreaker (L'Arnacœur) - very funny and a happy ending. Nikita too was a hit. As for a series The Bonfire of Destiny (Le Bazar de la Charité) was very watchable.

Un long dimanche de fiancailles/ A very long engagement

Breathtakingly beautiful!

TryingAgain16 · 28/03/2021 06:51

Jean de Florette/ Manon des sources.

Just thinking about it makes me goosebumpy.

farnworth · 28/03/2021 06:58

Agree with lots of the recommendations on here, love lots of them,- but like an earlier PP have to really recommend Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (Welcome to the sticks) - it made us all cry with laughter. Can rent on Amazon currently.

MyOtherProfile · 28/03/2021 07:29

Gerard Depardieu made some great films despite being pretty obnoxious.
Jean de Florette
Manon des sources
Cyrano
Tous Les Matins du Monde
Martin Guerre
Camille Claudel

Otherwise Audrey Tatou has also made some lovely films. Amelie is beautiful to watch, Un long dimanche de fiançailles or À la folie, pas du tout.

DoubleTweenQueen · 28/03/2021 08:12

Quite a good film for the family might be Les Visiteurs, with Jean Reno, before he was big :) Love Jean Reno.

UntamedWisteria · 28/03/2021 08:59

Thanks for all the suggestions.

We ended up watching Tell No One (DH rejected Amelie on the strength of the trailer but I will watch it on my own sometime). Found it eventually on Apple TV.

Both enjoyed it - great thriller with a good twist at the end, although we occasionally got a bit lost understanding who everyone was.

Will come back to this list again I'm sure.

Saw several of the classics when they first came out - e.g. La Haine, Nikita, Cyrano. Don't think I could bring myself to watch a Depardieu film now though.

Never saw the Three Colours trilogy, so great to be reminded of that.

Thank you everyone who took the trouble to post.

After Sunset and Before Sunrise

To be honest I haven't watched any of his since I found out just how awful he is. Shame because he really has made some good films.

ALongHardWinter · 28/03/2021 17:09

Betty Blue. It's one of my favourite films.

JaninaDuszejko · 28/03/2021 17:52

@DuchessMinnie

After Sunset and Before Sunrise
Neither of these are in French and only one is even set in France. They (and the third in the trilogy, Before Midnight) are probably my favourite films ever though.
TonTonMacoute · 28/03/2021 17:59

One of my favourites is called You Will Be My Son, a very disfunctional father son relationship set in a vineyard in Bordeaux.

Also Samba, with Omar Sy as a sans papiers trying to make his way in France, light hearted but sad, also stars Tahir Rahim from The Serpent.

A Prophet, also with Tahir Rahim set in a prison
