We have been watching Call My Agent which we like a lot, but Saturday is movie night.

So I would like to watch a French film with subtitles to keep up our practice. Please recommend me something good!

Les Amants du Pont Neuf

Quite a few series in french on All4 app and on Netflix too. Bazaar de charité is really good. Le Bureau on Amazon prime but not the easiest to follow.

Spiral of course . La Haine & Indigènes are gréât films.

Huit Femmes

L’Arnecoeur with Vanessa Paradis is really good.

Also Torn (tv series) on C4

UntamedWisteria · 27/03/2021 19:49

I watched Betty Blue, Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources when they all first came out.

I think I would prefer something a bit more contemporary.

We've also already seen Lupin, and greatly enjoyed it, but tonight want to watch a movie.

But will take on board some of the other series suggestions for when we finish Call My Agent.

Thank you all.

I love so many of the films already listed! Just to add, probably my favourite Kristin Scott Thomas film, I've Loved You So Long. And Nikita, an old Luc Besson. No one's mentioned La Reine Margot yet?

BlowDryRat · 27/03/2021 19:51

Untouchable. I didn't know it was a subtitled film before I saw it in the cinema. It's a brilliant film - funny, gritty, beautiful.

tanguero · 27/03/2021 19:57

Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot.

FruityPolos · 27/03/2021 19:57

Deerskin. It's a comedy horror, I thought it was fantastic but it is a bit odd so depends on your taste.

I also really like Jean-Pierre Jeunet's films, Amelie and Micmacs are my favourites.

Incidentally, for all those recommending Amelie on here, if you haven't seen the stage show version and get a chance to it is fantastic. It made me cry (but it's not in French)

tiramisualwaystiramisu · 27/03/2021 19:58

So many fab films already recommended! I recently saw The World is Yours (Le Monde est à toi) very silly crime film, but enjoyed it. It's on Amazon Prime. It's been a while since I saw it, but Heartbreaker (L'Arnacœur) was very funny

RosewoodBox · 27/03/2021 20:02

Another vote for Les Choristes. Entre les murs is good too.

FurrySlipperBoots · 27/03/2021 20:03

Petit Nicolas. It's a kids film but I thought it was hilarious!

Skyliner001 · 27/03/2021 20:03

Switchblade romance

DoubleTweenQueen · 27/03/2021 20:07

Cyrano de Bergerac
All the other fab suggestions too - so many great French films!

DoubleTweenQueen · 27/03/2021 20:08

Monsieur Hulot movies are very very dialogue-light though!

chuffoff · 27/03/2021 20:09

Les petits mouchoirs. It's a Guillaume Canet directed film (Marion Cotillard is in it) set in the Vendee about a group of friends. Brilliant film, they released a sequel last year which was almost as good. Nothing to hide on Netflix is a funny film too.

And Spiral is just about the greatest TV series ever made

DoubleTweenQueen · 27/03/2021 20:11

@UntamedWisteria Can I ask, where can you stream/watch these films? I don’t currently have any streaming service - just Freeview, Freesat, and my own DVD collection.
Do the main services have world cinema?

RainingZen · 27/03/2021 20:11

Le Diner de cons. It was remade as a dreadful film in English (American) but the French original is so funny.

DoubleTweenQueen · 27/03/2021 20:11

Yes Yes to Spiral! - all eight series currently available on iPlayer.

mellicauli · 27/03/2021 20:12

Le Grand Bain (male synchronized swimming team) and Marguerite (rich talentless opera singer) both excellent, amusing films, far superior to their English Language counterparts

Phyllis321 · 27/03/2021 20:13

Vagabonde (sans toi ni loi) is bleak but excellent.

DuckonaBike · 27/03/2021 20:14

Les demoiselles de Rochefort - lovely, beautiful, happy movie with fantastic soundtrack.

Also (already mentioned)

La gloire de mon pere
Le chateau de ma mere

Jean de Florette
Manon des sources

And Un coeur en hiver

As an aside, isn’t autocorrect a massive pain in the arse when you’re trying to type in a foreign language?

PeachMelba78 · 27/03/2021 20:22

Pour Elle, very intense but excellent, 36 - my favourite film of all time, or otherwise La Placard which is a good farce
