We have been watching Call My Agent which we like a lot, but Saturday is movie night.

So I would like to watch a French film with subtitles to keep up our practice. Please recommend me something good!

Elle
Trios hommes et un couffin
Dans la maison

TheVolturi · 27/03/2021 20:36

Breathless, but it's very old! 1960 I think.

Watchingpaintdryagain · 27/03/2021 20:41

La famille Belier.

Icytundra · 27/03/2021 20:44

Divines and Les miserables (2019) are both excellent and on Netflix

Les choristes is lovely

areyoumeop · 27/03/2021 20:47

bit of a mix of drama, horror, comedy and action
Taxi
District 13
Martyrs
Raw
les yeux sans visage
Girlhood
Alphaville
Faces Places
any film with Blue in the title (Big, Betty, Warmest Colour)

IJustLovePirates · 27/03/2021 20:48

Not a movie but the TV series Les Revenants is brilliant,

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 27/03/2021 20:49

They aren't contemporary, but La Haine and the Three Colours Trilogy are excellent

DipSwimSwoosh · 27/03/2021 20:53

I've seen most of those mentioned. Haven't got many more to add, but of those mentioned my favourites are
La vie en rose
Persepolis
intouchable.

DipSwimSwoosh · 27/03/2021 20:53

Les choristes is gorgeous too

LilacsAndFreesias · 27/03/2021 20:56

I liked La Vie Scolaire on netflix

FreshFancyFrogglette · 27/03/2021 21:03

I agree with breathless and switchblade romance.

Also want to add the French new wave "Le Quatre cent coups" (think it translates to the 400 blows before you die). And "Les Bonne Femmes" (think its the good girls) but my French is shit

mscynical · 27/03/2021 21:07

The Closet
Romuald and Juliette
both very funny with Daniel Auteuil who is one of my favourite French actors.
All of Spiral which will keep you going for some time!

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 27/03/2021 21:09

Taxi/ Taxi 2
Harry, He’s Here to Help/ With a Friend Like Harry
Tell No One

Amore2 · 27/03/2021 21:17

As pp said, see if you can watch Romuauld et Juliette. Gentle, funny and touching. Easy to watch too.

@EmmaOvary

Ridicule by patrice Leconte
I’m so glad someone mentioned Ridicule! I love this film. Not contemporary but it’s wonderful.
SulisMinerva · 27/03/2021 21:24

La Veuve de Saint-Pierre is good.

Seconding the recommendation for Les Revenants.

Nearlymelanie · 27/03/2021 21:26

Comme une Image (as good as gold) is a lovely film

321zyx · 27/03/2021 21:27

Jean de Florette / Manon des Sources

MrsDarcyIwish · 27/03/2021 21:53

A few of my favourites:

Les Visiteurs - silly but funny time travel comedy with Jean Réno as a 12th(?) century knight stuck in the late 20th with century his serf sidekick, played by Christian Clavier. There was a sequel too.

Le soleil au dessus des nuages - late 90s feel good movie with Daniel Prevost. Can't say too much without spoiling it.

La Vérité Si Je Mens - another mid/late 90s comedy.

Les Enfants du Marais - love story, comedy, feel good, set in the 1930s. Eric Cantona has a role in it but the main stars are the lovely Jacques Gambelin and André Dussolier.

Une hirondelle ne fait pas le Printemps with Michel Serrault and Mathilde Seigner.

Lots of wacky 70s comedies with Louis de Funès : L'Aile ou la Cuisse, La Folie des Grandeurs (starring Yves Montand), La Grande Vadrouille (also starring Bourville), Les Gendarmes de St Tropez...

soontobeamama · 27/03/2021 22:20

Not a film, but the series Lupin is very good, in French but with English subtitles.

mammmamia · 27/03/2021 22:21

Good old fashioned slapstick comedies:

Le Diner de Cons
Taxi

mammmamia · 27/03/2021 22:26

Agree with many of the suggestions here but also

Le chateau de ma mere
La gloire de mon Pere

bagelbaby · 27/03/2021 22:28

The Hairdresser's husband

LilacsAndFreesias · 27/03/2021 22:29

The Well digger's daughter
