We have been watching Call My Agent which we like a lot, but Saturday is movie night.

So I would like to watch a French film with subtitles to keep up our practice. Please recommend me something good!

Ah i've seen so many but my recall off the top of my head is terrible...Les Intouchables, Potiche, La Vie En Rose, La Haine, Persepolis, Etres et Avoirs...

For TV series: Lupin, Fait Pas Ci Fait Pas Ca, Un Village Francais...

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 27/03/2021 18:14

Second Spiral

One of the uniquest films I've seen was a Marion Cotillard French film called Jeux d'enfants (literal translation Childs Play I guess) but in English it was called Love Me If You Dare.

Absolutely bonkers

Also La Vie En Rose and Amelie are musts. I also liked Tell No One

I know tonight is movie night but if you want to try a series for another night try Torn on All4. My French is pretty basic but I found it quite easy to follow without reading the subtitles. And the scenery is tres jolie. Smile

Also, try Spiral. It's a long running French cop thriller on BBC4.

Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (if you're in the mood for a silly comedy)

angstridden2 · 27/03/2021 18:25

C’est la Vie, very funny film about wedding planners.

NigellasMicrowave · 27/03/2021 18:25

I was also going to say Etre er Avoir. L’Auberge Espagnole is also lovely.

alanpartridgefromtheoasthouse · 27/03/2021 18:26

I loved L'Auberge Espagnole, about a guy who goes to Barcelona for a year with Erasmus. Lots of recognisable faces in it, including a couple of Brits, and it's very funny! There is a sequel too called Les Poupées Russes.

BraveBananaBadge · 27/03/2021 18:26

Where can you see Un Village Francais, @MeadowHay? I know it's got Gilou from Spiral in and it would be interesting to see him doing something totally different.

miltonj · 27/03/2021 18:36

Jean de florette/manor de sources has been my favourite film since i was little.

miltonj · 27/03/2021 18:39

Or my father's glory and my mother's castle

Fruitinator · 27/03/2021 18:41

Just want to second Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Lupin as well.

OP, I don't know what level French Speaker you are ( I'm only really at beginner/intermediate level), but there is a great You Tube channel called Street French and they go through the episodes of Lupin and talk through the slang phrases which I found really helpful.

converseandjeans · 27/03/2021 18:43

He loves me he loves me not (A la folie pas du tout)
Amelie
La Haine
Les choristes

LampsOn · 27/03/2021 19:01

The diving bell and the butterfly is beautiful

WeatherwaxLives · 27/03/2021 19:12

I thoroughly enjoyed Apres Vous, if you're looking for something funny.

purrswhileheeats · 27/03/2021 19:22

What about Les Amants du Pont Neuf?

greyinganddecaying · 27/03/2021 19:30

I Am Not An Easy Man - on Netflix - I loved it!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 27/03/2021 19:31

Amelie or Spiral depending on your mood

kayakingmum · 27/03/2021 19:34

It's a series, not a film but I couldn't resist mentioning because it's so good:

Spiral (known as Engrenages in French). My partner bought a box set of all 86 episodes for Valentine's days.

Nitgel · 27/03/2021 19:36

I watched Rust and Bone on Bfi player last week. Really good

Nitgel · 27/03/2021 19:37

Spiral is on iplayer now complete series

LilacsAndFreesias · 27/03/2021 19:38

I love Diabolo Menthe and Les Choristes,

musicmum75 · 27/03/2021 19:39

L'Apartment and Etre et Avoir. Both fantastic but very different films.

Cherrysoup · 27/03/2021 19:39

Betty Blue is quite depressing/shocking.

Au Revoir Les Enfants, old but fabulous. I did it for a few years running for the A Level film, the kids loved it and gave me a related card when they left. It’s a tear jerker.

LilacsAndFreesias · 27/03/2021 19:40

La Vie est une longue fleuve tranquille
