How is this not murder?(upsetting)

A mother has appeared in court today charged with the manslaughter of her toddler.

She left her, alone, for 6 days.

How can this not be murder? I don't understand.

Considering this mum and her baby lived in a mother and baby unit run by the YMCA and paid for by grants from Brighton council, someone in authority surely must be accountable. Her mother’s negligence caused her death, but if she had been left on previous occasions why were they not more closely monitored by staff. What is the point a mother and baby unit if there is no help or support or monitoring and a baby can be left alone to die. Heads should indeed roll.

Bubblebu · 09/04/2021 13:15

Sundances

i seem to recall that the head of social services Baby P got a massive pay out and / or brought an action against the council which was successful and popped up somewhere else sometime afterwards......

but more to the point why the heck did this mother not have a social worker.

Whingey · 09/04/2021 13:30

They all pop up elsewhere! Every time a spokesperson for social shirk is mentioned it's a useless idiot! Felt sorry for Victoria Climbie parents who can't understand why nobody has gone to prison. They built a school named after her! Haringey pensioners suffer to pay for it!

@LizBennet

Apologies to those who read my comment and translated it to “chop the mother’s head off like we’re in 18th century France”. Congratulations to those who applied some critical thinking skills 👍
So what you were trying to say was the mother 'should be dismissed or forced to resign' when you said her 'head should roll' Wink

In all seriousness, I'm glad you're not suggesting she should be executed. We're better than that, here.

I do wonder if those people suggesting social services should be hung out to dry have any idea how horribly under-resourced they are. You couldn't get me to do that job for three times the money it actually pays.

Whingey · 09/04/2021 16:00

Sorry but social shirkers spend more time on the sick or annual leave than they do working! Also will not remove children nobody wants. All came running when someone wanted a 13 year old removed and ran the other way when they saw it was ginger!

Moondust001 · 09/04/2021 16:08

@LizBennet

So reports are now saying she left the baby alone on 11 previous occasions. Heads should roll, including hers.
What reports would those be?

The judge has not yet handed down a sentence, so the entire matter is still sub judice and there should be no "reports".

LizBennet · 09/04/2021 16:19

“The 11 incidents where Asiah was left unsupervised, were brought to light by the prosecution at a bail hearing in Hove last year, The Times reports.“

Many news outlets are reporting that news.

I wouldn’t do the job either thedancingbear.

What a load of ignorant nonsense.

'Social shirkers' ffs. Are you eight?

It's not a mother and baby unit It's a low support provision for young parents. Completely different set up.
Stratfordplace · 09/04/2021 17:13

It was paid for at a cost of over £100,000 per annum. They had staff onsite. So what were they paid to provide and what was the point of on-site staff.

Where have you seen that figure?
Stratfordplace · 09/04/2021 17:23

It was reported that the YMCA had a contract for 3 years for in excess £300,000.

You know that there are multiple accommodations within gocher court right? It wasn't costing the council £100k per flat. It might not fit the narrative but low support accommodation for young parents is available and it meets the needs of some parents. This is what this young woman was assessed as needing.
PasstheBucket89 · 09/04/2021 20:53

from what her sister said about frequently going missing from 14 onwards, she possibly was being trafficked.

Newpuppymummy · 09/04/2021 21:01

That poor baby.

It wasn’t a mother and baby unit. For those saying that the baby must’ve been crying and staff at the accommodation should have heard , often babies who are badly neglected don’t cry as they are so used to not having their needs met. This is horrific but true.

thedancingbear · 10/04/2021 10:22

or £100k a year.

It costs about £78k a year just to put a security guard on duty, on minimum wage, 24/7. That's before you pay national insurance, buildings insurance, maintenance of the building, cleaning, business rates, everything else you can possibly think of.

How on earth, against that background, do you expect the YMCA to track the comings and goings of everyone in the block, train them on safeguarding, put in place processes for raising the alarm, etc, etc etc?

This was not a setup that was ever going to give this child any kind of protection at all. Please don't point the finger at the YMCA, point the finger at those who vote for political parties who cut our public services - which are there, amongst other, to protect children - to the bone.

Stratfordplace · 10/04/2021 10:34

Dancingbear please educate me on what Grocher Courtwas providing and why they felt the need to have someone there, in an office at the entrance, full-time. It looks very run down to me. You go out of your way to be confrontational to any poster that is questioning the mother’s neglect, the social services role and the landlord’s role (YMCA).
Does Grocher court include the terraced housing along the side of the property because it previously sold for £15.5 million. You could have bought a lot for that not 8 self-contained units in a run down part of Brighton. It must have been sold as a business or going concern. Please educate us what exactly was going on. There was a room for meetings and tenants to meet with their various social workers, advisers, etc. What was the responsibility of the YMCA. I suggest you look at job applications for this type caring, one is online for the YMCA and mentions Grocher Court as well as others.

@Jellycatspyjamas

We can't get involved with every young vulnerable parent on the off chance they won't be able to cope. I think we should. Even just weekly engagement with a Family Support Worker or something.

Very few people would be prepared to foot the tax bill to fund this. Services have been defunded and cut to the absolute bones, there’s literally no money for support work unless there’s a known risk.

The psychological profile of the mother here - which was known beforehand - clearly presented a serious risk.
SilenceIsNotAvailable · 24/05/2021 06:45

whilst it doesn’t necessarily make you feel sympathy it makes you realise that life isn’t all black and white and that we have to do something as a society to not keeping failing these kids that grow up to do monstrous things themselves.

Not "necessarily" feel sympathy? Why would you sympathise with a child killer, at all?

And here we go again with the trope that victims of abuse are destined to be abusers. Many of us had horrific childhoods and grew up to be kind people, not "monstrous". Sad

Lbnc2021 · 06/08/2021 15:27

She got 9 years in prison.

RIP little one Flowers

Nettymaniaa · 07/08/2021 12:28

If you google her (i thought she looked familiar) she was repeatedly in London papers from the age of 14 as gone missing from home. Would return and then go missing again. There is mention of sexual exploitation. What she did is horrible beyond belief. How she came to this point may end up as being awful there will be a SCR on the NSPCC website at some point.

Maddison12 · 08/08/2021 19:38

9 years for a child's life. A child that died alone, cold, hungry and in pain Sad
The mother will be out in 6 years when she's 25 with her whole life ahead of her. The great British justice system strike again.

Whingey · 08/08/2021 20:07

Sorry but as mentioned before 2 children are killed every week. What is the point of social workers? Another little girl has been killed since. Kaileigh Jade? Messed nappy and beaten to death over it😢
