What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

A classic set of encyclopaedias

Classic books on the bookcase (now you can buy the classics very cheaply from all sorts of places but back then it was just either expensive book shops or second hand market stalls and not the gentrified type of market either Grin).

LittleDorrit I grew up being aware that Sofa was posh whereas Settee wasn't (because my mum said Settee whereas posh friend's mum said Sofa) but yes to Dessert being posh back then instead of Pudding. (now Pudding is posher than Dessert!)

Posh friend's mum also said Sitting Room whereas my mum said Lounge.

I grew up in large house in the country with wooden floors and Victorian bathrooms. My friend sally lived in a house in town with carpet everywhere and an avocado green bathroom suite. I thought it was to die for I was sooo jealous.

When I was a kid I thought French stick (baguette) bread was super posh. My parents would get it on special occasions and cut it into slices at an angle. Amazing!
And those Phileas Fogg 'nibbles' like Mignons Morceaux. Actually come to think of it weren't those little dried up bits of garlic french stick?

ThePontiacBandit · 24/03/2021 21:53

Grin seems cake forks are quite divisive! DD always asks for one when she has cake...

Thought of another - having columns on your house. A friend had them (she did live on a very posh road though).

LittleDorrit YY to porches and especially hatstands! I would have loved to have a hatstand! SO posh! And also the PP who said Doorbells. A proper wired bell one, not a battery one. I now actually have a proper wired bell one (original) and I am very proud of it and don't really like people who don't ring it carefully, in case it should break Grin grin])

Also a bathroom with a bidet and thick toilet/bath mats - a far cry from our worn out raggedy things and shower over the bath.

The Beef Eater and the travel lodge bar area. We only ate out on very rare occasions, mainly to celebrate first communion’s and big life events. This was always at the Beef Eater, I thought it was beyond posh and the mock tails the essence of class, the staff were also so nice to us and always made us feel really special. Once before the cinema, for a very special treat we got sandwiches in the travel lodge bar next to the cinema complex. I was thrilled to be so grown up to be taken to a fancy hotel for lunch. We take going out to eat so often for granted these days, I would love to feel the same excitement going for din’s at pizza express now, or in a few months anyway.

Fry's Turkish delight, but they always were more expensive than the other chocolate bars. They used to be a good size as well though, not like the tiny things you get now.

Wimpy birthday parties. All my birthday parties were at home. DM later told me it was because we had good sized rooms where loads of children would fit and not everyone had that. I still would have loved one though, I just had really creepy clowns instead of Mr Wimpy who was only just a little bit creepy. Wink

I remember visiting a school friend one lunch time and her mum made us tomato soup, and added milk to the can to swirl around and pour into the pan too. When I went home I asked DM why she never did that as it seemed so nice, she replied that people did it to make the cheaper brands seem creamier and make them go further. (We don't have it often now but I still use a splash of milk to rinse out the can, even with the nicer brands, DM would be so annoyed if she saw me. Grin)

I used to be under the impression that Sheba cat food was posh! Grin It was only around 8 years ago when we took in a rescue cat that I discovered that a) it's not really any more expensive than most other cat foods, and b) my cat hates it. She will not even try ANY of the varieties I've offered her over the years!

@longwayoff

I bought some Fortnum's tea the other day. It's ok but could have had equivalent from any shop imo.
I don't know why I get swayed by Fortune but every single time I come out the shop with something am disappointed with..it's usually stuff you can buy elsewhere packaged for them. I never learn!
flipflop76 · 24/03/2021 21:58

Houmous

orangecinnamon · 24/03/2021 21:59

I mean Fortnums not Fortunes

Gingerlilly · 24/03/2021 22:02

PiatD’or wine - about 35 years ago I took to a dinner party because I thought it was posh. It’s not.

Middleagedmidwife · 24/03/2021 22:04

My husband thought I was posh as my parents had both a dishwasher and a conservatory! Poor man- how disappointed he must be.

YonderTweek · 24/03/2021 22:04

Coventry.

NoProblem123 · 24/03/2021 22:05

People who had wine in the house. Just wine for no reason, waiting to be drank.

I loved those Phileas Fogg garlic mignon things! Bought something that looked similar recently and was disappointed, not nearly crunchy or garlicky enough 😔
DianaT1969 · 24/03/2021 22:06

Harvey's Bristol Cream
Not posh, but special. We only had it in when my man was visiting.

Cheese boards. Nobody I knew would have this after dinner. It was Artic Roll or Angel's Delight.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 24/03/2021 22:06

Vesta meals were a posh treat when I was a child - being foreign food and all

WhentheDealGoesDown · 24/03/2021 22:06

Years ago, having a Matalan card, at one time I'm sure it was a bit exclusive

heywhatswrongwitu · 24/03/2021 22:08

Sky TV
And a collection of video cassettes on display

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 24/03/2021 22:09

What sticks in my mind from secondary school is crisps! If you had something like kettle chips, they were “posh” and someone would take the mick. If you had supermarket value, that was “skanky” and - yep - someone would take the mick. You had to stick to the middle ground of walkers or wotsits!
I thought tumble driers or dishwashers must be posh, because we never had one.

LokiDoki75 · 24/03/2021 22:10

Boxes of multi-coloured tissues, can you even still get them? I used to think Mintolas were pretty posh and then they changed their name to Mint Munchies and the illusion was shattered 😆

DragonPoop · 24/03/2021 22:10

J20’s, appletizer, and coca-cola all in glass bottles Grin
