What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

White carpets.

My grandparents were very posh, but my Great Aunt always seemed very glamorous in her totally white penthouse apartment.

White carpets.

My grandparents were very posh, but my Great Aunt always seemed very glamorous in her totally white penthouse apartment.

For me it was plush pink carpets and brass fittings.
MsTSwift · 24/03/2021 21:29

Cream plush carpets
Inbuilt mirrored cupboards in a bedroom

Don’t get the snootiness about the Ivy there’s one in our small city it’s perfect for eating as a family with teens as feels quite glamorous but wide ranging menu with burgers etc for them and slightly more sophisticated choices for adults. Booked for 17th May!

BurbageBrook · 24/03/2021 21:30

Ooh, thought of one. I thought a friend of my mum's had a very posh house.^^ All gilt photo frames and chandeliers and glittery cushions -- I thought it was amazing. Our own house was actually bigger and its wooden floors and beams and cottage style kitchen etc would probably have been 'posher' by many people (not that I set any store by that stuff now as an adult!)

But I desperately wished my parents would get all posh white carpets and chandeliers and gold everywhere like their friends had!

Bit of a reverse, I’d thought Wilkinsons was a nasty cheap shop, like Poundland and the ilk, but a colleague, assured me it wasn’t.

And really it’s just like Woolworths years ago, so decent quality stuff, but more paint, pet stuff and DIY.

Really what Woolworths should have aspired to, before it went under.

Less chocolate and sweets, more of a boots/ superdrug, with added, home wares, inexpensive B& Q , pets at home and some Woolworths toys thrown in.
Asda ish. Without the food.

A better, good all round store, without the worry of it being out of date and poor quality ( like pound shops)

Jacuzzi baths until I had one in my hotel suite and it chucked out a load of cold, manky water Sad

Also, shopping in M&S food hall WITH A TROLLEY!

My friend was posh when I was a child, a very long time ago. She had a Sunday best coat, a fridge and a box of tissues. I was awestruck.

It was many, many years before I stopped thinking that tissues were posh.

tanguero · 24/03/2021 21:33

Love Wilko !

BurbageBrook · 24/03/2021 21:34

@Dreadnought77 I had the exact same preconception about Wilkos! But actually it's fab for all sorts of homeward and DIY.

Just remembered I also used to think Minstrels chocolate was posh 🤣

SplendidSuns1000 · 24/03/2021 21:36

Going out for the day and buying food there, rather than bringing a packed lunch. I now buy lunch/coffee/a snack anytime I'm out (even if it's just when going to the supermarket) just to revel in how fancy I feel.

Yankee candles, scented soaps, jars and canisters for things like pasta or flour, lindt, having a glass of wine with dinner at the weekend.

Blyatiful · 24/03/2021 21:40

Having relatives that spoke RP. All of mine were foreign or cockney or a mixture of the two.

Having a Breville sandwich toaster and soda stream.

Terry’s All Gold or New Berry Fruits.

Spending Saturday night at home with your parents watching telly, instead of in the car park of a rough old boozer in North London, with someone bringing you a lemonade or bag of crisps to shut you up, and a tray of cockles to eat on the long walk home (“Don’t tell Nan or Aunt Aydel, they’re not kosher.”

WhentheDealGoesDown · 24/03/2021 21:40

I can remember when DS (28) was young, one of his friends from nursery was always dressed in Next clothes and a few commented about it as it was seen as posh.

I have never been to the Range as none local but imagine it to be like B&M from the way people speak about it on here

Jessbow · 24/03/2021 21:41

When I was a kid, posh was having coloured plimsoles to play out in, rather than finishig off your old school shoes through the summer holidays.

Posh, was having whole biscuits,in packets, NOt broken biscuits bought loose by the lb

Kona84 · 24/03/2021 21:41

Fridges with a ice maker.
People who had perfume and not just body spray.
People who had cars

PurpleRainDancer · 24/03/2021 21:43

Viennetta ice-cream

MolotovMocktail · 24/03/2021 21:43

Guylian sea shell chocolates!

Dreamponytail · 24/03/2021 21:44

A proper home made Christmas cake at Christmas, with decorations.

Biscuit tins.

Cereal containers.

Any food with garlic in it was posh. Garlic wasn't widely available then.

Scented talcum powder.

Having your own swing and/or slide in the garden.

LittleDoritt · 24/03/2021 21:44

Avocados. I was about eighteen before I had an avocado. I remember being absolutely gobsmacked when an Italian friend of mine casually fed her baby some avocado on a spoon. A rare and luxury food like avocado being fed to a BABY!! Once I moved from the sticks to North London in my early twenties I wised up Grin

LittleDoritt · 24/03/2021 21:45

Also, the words "dessert" and "settee" rather than "pudding" and "sofa". So posh.

Dreamponytail · 24/03/2021 21:46

Jessbow I remember the boxes of broken biscuits! Cheaper than nice ones.

Chocolate digestives were posh. We had Nice biscuits (if we were lucky).

Danish butter cookies in a round tin. Each one had its own paper case! So posh!

StripedLeopard · 24/03/2021 21:47

Imperial Leather soap

Howtomakeevery1 · 24/03/2021 21:47

So the Ivy - the one in Cambridge is great, assuming you’re expecting an upmarket chain.

SnowWouldHelp · 24/03/2021 21:48

Yes to Sobranies!

Luckyelephant1 · 24/03/2021 21:49

Boursin cheese
After eights
Vienetta
Desserts/cakes from Costco
Yankee candles
A serving hatch between kitchen and dining room
Travel sweets in a tin in the car
Air fresheners
Anything on a cocktail stick
Guylian chocolates

LittleDoritt · 24/03/2021 21:50

I'm having a right trip down memory lane now. Porches. (No, not porsches Grin). I dreamed of having a porch - a place to put your coat and your wellies and ooh, maybe even an ultra posh hatstand - rather than a front door that opened straight on to your living room. So unimaginably posh.
I've still never lived in a house with a porch and attained ultimate poshness.
