What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

@Howtomakeevery1

So the Ivy - the one in Cambridge is great, assuming you’re expecting an upmarket chain.
No...the original Ivy. Over 100 years old and back in its heyday the sort of place where you could mingle with dressed down a-listers whilst a horde of paps lurked outside.
Sarcobaleno · 24/03/2021 22:10

@MsIreneWinters

Chambourcy chocolate mousse
Blast from the past! And so posh
SallyOMalley · 24/03/2021 22:11

I am a child of the '70s. As a kid, these were definitely posh:

(Very) deep pile carpet
Baths where you climb carpeted steps to get in
Proper shower cubicles (not a rubber shower attachment on the taps)
Those swinging garden seats with a canopy
Sodastream!

TableFlowerss · 24/03/2021 22:17

@SweetMandarin

Sheba.
Yep- looks good enough to eat.

I’ve often wondered if DH would be able to tell the difference if I served him a tin if Sheba for lunch.....

Hyacinth88 · 24/03/2021 22:19

Those jellysweets like slices of orange and lemon or the ones like the shapes of the fruit in a box

ByTheStarryNight · 24/03/2021 22:20

My Granny's bathroom was posh to my naive eyes
Carpet on the toilet lid.
Barbie with a knitted skirt over the spare toilet roll.
A glass bowl with blue and white cotton wool balls in.

I could only dream of seeing cotton wool in our house. Such extravagance, we had 2 face cloths each; one in use, one in the wash.

The irony is I've stopped buying cotton wool as an adult as it feels environmentally irresponsibly, and I use a face cloth instead.

In the early 70s, was bowled over by a friend having a washbasin in her bedroom

After Eights - a treat just for Christmas

Thorntons’ Continental Chocolates - the height of sophistication

Huge, padded greetings cards which came in a box - my uncle always got one for my aunt at Christmas and for birthdays, I was very impressed Grin

[quote RubyViolet]Candles are such a racket !
You can keep your Neom and Yankee Candles , l give you the House Of Trudon who sell candle a that’s £450 and smells of the wooden floors at Versailles.
They also have a candle that smells of moss on a convent wall.
Now that’s reet posh that !

I've worked in a convent. The only smells you get from the wall are bubble gum, Impulse and sneaky fags before formtime.

Dining table/ dining room
Food hatch
Serving bowls on the table instead of being plated up (still embarrasses me as I don't know how much to take and end up with a tiny amount, feigning I'm full up)

Gardens, drive ways, garages, porches, garden furniture, rotary clothes dryer, 1970s build housing estates - envied my cousins. Thought they were all soooo posh!

Gardengrace · 24/03/2021 22:25

TV in a kitchen or childs/teens bedroom, Jamie Oliver restaurant cars with sunroofs, panelled decor, now it's everywhere and in all the wrong kind of houses 🤣

RedMarauder · 24/03/2021 22:26

Nescafe Gold Blend - thanks to advertising.

I struggle to drink coffee out of a jar now thanks to a former flatmate who was a barista, and then living abroad in places where people drunk strong freshly ground coffee.....

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 24/03/2021 22:26

Calling the couch a sofa.ohhhhh fancy..
A separate dining room and dining table
Real flowers, not the plastic ones from the market

Lochmorlich · 24/03/2021 22:29

Honey. We never had it as a child.
Liquers and liquer glasses.. I remember visiting parents friends and I was offered cointreau after my meal in a tiny liquer glass.

Respectmyauthoritah · 24/03/2021 22:30

Fenjal bath oil! My nan had it in the 80s in the little blue bottle and it looked like some sort of magic elixir to 8 year old me. I've just googled it and it's still going strong apparently.

PapaSierra · 24/03/2021 22:31

Brannigans crisps, you know the beef and mustard ones?
Going 'out'. I would call friends and they would say they were going 'out ' with their family, whereas I was always free as a bird. That seemed very posh to me.

Incense sticks.

Electric windows.

Those white puffy paper lampshades.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 24/03/2021 22:32

Oh my yes Fenjal. Vivid green really pungent
We had own brand shampoo also body wash and I so wanted a posh body shop or fenjal

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 24/03/2021 22:32

Calling Your tea supper, said as suppah

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/03/2021 22:34

Parents had friends with a bathroom like this when I was a kid. Plush carpet. Plum pink mat and loo cover to match. Posh coloured suite in a maroon red colour. But our ndn had bidets in 2 bathrooms. Now that was posh.

Rocking chairs - the wooden kind
Page boy haircuts
Eating out
Vienetta
Champagne
Foie Gras
Burberry Macs
Louis Vuitton handbags
TV in the bedroom
Continental quilts
Door curtains

Mummyoflittledragon · 24/03/2021 22:34

Forgot - fish knives.

longdressed · 24/03/2021 22:37

When I was a child I thought posh was:

Having Sky television

Having windows on the sides of your house rather than just on the front and back (I have no idea where this came from but I still prefer houses with windows on the sides to this dayGrin)

Having a cordless telephone

Having two 'big' cars, as opposed to one 'big' car and a tiny runaround

Fitted wardrobes

Ponds in the garden

I then grew up and went to university, made some friends who were actually posh and realised that their houses were full of ancient stuff, they had the scruffiest cars I'd ever seen and they had 5 TV channels Grin

FreshFancyFrogglette · 24/03/2021 22:38

Baylis and harding, Thorntons.. Actually quite middle of the line stuff, but from some reason, from the packaging etc I always thought that they were luxury brands...

Heartofglass12345 · 24/03/2021 22:38

When I was younger I thought the harvester was posh, I remember my friends parents taking us there on her birthday once, I thought I was so posh haha.

Anyone that went abroad, had sky/ cable TV, a PC, and had parents that owned their house.

We never went on holiday, or even for day trips! I was 17/ 18 when we first got a computer and had virgin TV, around 2002.

Chihuahuacat · 24/03/2021 22:39

Feather dusters (no idea, they seemed fancy!)
A combination dvd and vcr player, or a tv with a dvd plated built in.
Faux fur coats
Sara Lee gateau
Vol-au-vents
Gardens (we only had a yard)

LoveSummerNotIcecream · 24/03/2021 22:41

Vienetta.

Dee1975 · 24/03/2021 22:42

Viennetta ice cream. We only ever had that very occasionally on a Sunday as a ‘treat’ !!
