What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

Who made the DM? Confused

MrsDrudge · 26/03/2021 11:58

My MiLthought she was posh because she served grilled half grapefruit sometimes for starter at Sunday lunch (calling it lunch not dinner was thought to be posh too). She thought it very refined to call pudding “sweet course”, and said “loo” not lavvie as I did.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/03/2021 13:29

@Winecurestiredness

I thought M&S was posh until thats where i got my lunch as an inpatient in hospital. Hospital had an M&S Cafe too....very nice...but not posh at all!
Slight sidetrack but I think the M&S food takeover of places like hospitals and service stations was genius. They are all places that you visit not very often, and where you expect food to be expensive anyway.

Oh the high flats in Glasgow

I used to think they looked dead glam, they are in fact a shithole.

SherbrookeFosterer · 26/03/2021 13:43

A school friend's parents had a tray of ready rolled joints on the coffee table prepared by the maid.

For a long time I thought that was a blend of cool and posh.

I think very differently now.

longwayoff · 26/03/2021 14:11

@Ifeelsuchafool, didn't know that but CS Lewis seems to have had him sussed. I feel that, when someone is a snob in JB mode, well, it's a bit 'common' to be pointing out the perceived imperfections of others. Tsk. Demoted properly to middle class.

That must have been an interesting interview, could any mumsnetters who have worked as maids confirm if they were ever required to skin up?!

@MrsDrudge although I've never owned a fish knife in my life, (nor used one, I prefer to use two forks), in addition to pastry forks (also used for cake) and soup spoons, the one type of, "specialised" spoon I do possess is a grapefruit spoon, several in fact. Now they were really useful as it did mean that I could be lazy in preparing grapefruit and not have to cut the individual segments before plonking it on a plate! They're pretty redundant now though as nobody seems to eat grapefruit halves for breakfast any more.

There was a time in the 70s and 80s (and maybe before but I'm not quite that ancient) when every woman watching her weight started the day with grapefruit as we were under the illusion that it helped boost metabolism! (Old gimmer here! Grin)

longwayoff · 26/03/2021 14:48

Come on people, who's got grape scissors?

This is the pinnacle of stealth boast which most of this thread has been Grin

Badedas. This was extremely luxurious and posh when I was a kid - no way would we ever be allowed to use mum's Badedas. I put some in my DH's Christmas stocking last year thinking it was a lovely treat (he likes baths) and he found it highly amusing. I thought it was the height of bathing sophistication. Apparently not.

alltoomuchrightnow · 26/03/2021 15:06

Not mine but....
I remember the programme with Caitlin Moran and her sister and she said when they were teens they thought Bon Marche was posh and unaffordable , Bon Marche was kinda their goal as I recall if they ever got rich...

Recently had a chat on FB with an Australian re Pizza Express in my local town, that he'd visited when over. He said he found it totally extortionate, therefore in his mind it was v posh. I said that's more to do with the exchange rate surely..and when I eat out in his country, I do find it very cheap (even though other things have gone up in price due to our exchange rate...) He said oh I googled it and saw it's closed. Obviously I'm right..it closed as it's too expensive and posh. My point is made. I said, errr no we are in lockdown three here ( he had no idea) and therefore all eateries that aren't takeaway, are pretty much closed.. Didn't believe me when I said it's where eg, teenagers would go for a date. Or a family would go if they didn't want McD's but didn't want the cost of a fancy restaurant. There was no persuading him that here it's not cordon bleu and where the 'upper class' go...

alltoomuchrightnow · 26/03/2021 15:08

I was called posh and a snob as a kid by my friends because I collected.... fossils.

longwayoff · 26/03/2021 15:19

@TeaAddict235, good innit? Not mine but an employer's many years ago. I answered the office phone "This is Garrards (I think it was). Please be so good as to let Mrs X know that her grape scissors have arrived." Who knew?

PeacheyPeach · 26/03/2021 15:26

My friend had a canopy over her bed and actual fitted wardrobes and blinds that had ruffled hems. I was green with envy it was a real posh princess bedroom in my eyes. So much so that I I tried to sellotape an old net curtain to the wall above my bed to get the same effect 😂

MrsDrudge · 26/03/2021 16:08

@Ifeelsuchafool - I’m an old gimmer too and remember the grapefruit diet. And the grapefruit spoons - like teaspoons but with a serrated edge. Great for removing the segments from your grapefruit halves, quite sharp though and painful if you caught your lip!

190190tnt · 26/03/2021 16:52

Back in the 70's someone who lived the same block of council flats as me had a white, shag pile carpet and a nose job, i thought that was super posh and the height of sophistication

@PeacheyPeach oh that’s really sweet. I remember those ruffled blinds too and wished I had one in my bedroom.

The Ritz and Harvey Nicholls. Both are full of people pretending to be posh!

whetherpigshavewings · 26/03/2021 18:02

the Ritz is not cheap though!

Afternoon tea is sold to any random, but the main facilities if not posh are still upmarket.

GlitterFairy01 · 26/03/2021 18:09

I thought having a telephone in your home was posh- we had a phone box for our street and when it rang, someone (normally a child) would answer it and then run to the which ever neighbour it was for.

Also thought potatoes with no dirt on was the ultimate posh buy! We just had a sack of muddy potatoes.

CityCommuter · 26/03/2021 18:11

In our house when we were kids we always thought having Artic Roll for dessert on Sundays was posh!

whetherpigshavewings · 26/03/2021 19:02

I am sure I even seen posters describing Waitrose as posh Grin

It's a blooming supermarket!

Bramblecrumble · 26/03/2021 19:06

Vienna ice-cream. Then I discovered it's often 99p!
