What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

"HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee

@Ifeelsuchafool who knew! So Saxa from the packet doesn’t cut it"

No, but they're very old fashioned now, we all use Maldon Sea Salt, or Persian Blue with a shark's tooth grater if we're really posh these days Grin

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 25/03/2021 22:52

Persian blue what?

PeacheyPeach · 25/03/2021 22:53

Just chuckling to all these so funny!
I've thought of another one. Fresh orange juice! We would have this as a treat with a nice meal it would be poured into my mum's favourite glass jug and topped up with water.so it went around us all!!

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 25/03/2021 22:53

My grandparents had a saltseller and spoon, but I always thought that was because they were very old and hadn't seen salt and pepper shakers.

OnGoldenPond · 25/03/2021 22:58

Afternoon tea at The Ritz.

Went on work do. They didn't have lapsang souchong tea. You can get it in Asda.

Plain carpets. I became friends with a new girl at school when I was about 14. Her house was the first I went into that had plain carpets (some pale pink, some cream). I had literally never seen that in a normal house before, probably only in big houses in TV shows. It blew my mind at the time. And I was nervous every time I went in there as I knew I'd end up spilling something (which I did, many times over the years!)

Babygotblueyes · 25/03/2021 23:10

BBC2! As a kid I thought it was the channel posh people watched.

RedcurrantPuff · 25/03/2021 23:17

A silver after eight holder
Crystal glasses and decanter
Having 2 cars/toilets
Bungalows

BlackeyedSusan · 25/03/2021 23:33

next was posh. I was surprised that someone was saying they only got their kids clothes form next and not somewhere posh..

asda, charity shop and handme downs here. I still think next is posh. and bloody expensive.

posh is eating at the dining table everynight. (we ate in front of the tv.)
posh is holidays abroad, turns out some of them are cheaper than uk holidays.
video players were posh when they came out.
having more than a bread and dripping and salt white bread or cheese sandwich and an apple in your lunch. (ie home made cake was posh as were crisps) I still mostly hate apples, can't understand why dd would eat them.

RedcurrantPuff · 25/03/2021 23:40

I used to think salad cream was posh. It sounds posher than “mayonnaise”. I thought that’s why we never had it at home as it was too posh. It was actually because my mother thought salad cream was “common” so wasn’t allowed.

abricotine · 25/03/2021 23:47

Salmon
Buffets
A paper parasol in your drink.

Marcipex · 25/03/2021 23:50

I thought Persian Blue was a cat. It would be unkind to grate it though 🤔

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 25/03/2021 23:53

Honestly I knew about malden, saxa, not Persian blue
A whole new world

Ifeelsuchafool · 26/03/2021 00:02

There's also Frost Salt from Egypt, Indian Black Salt and a whole host of Salt Mixes, ie salt mixed with other things like Bamboo Salt, Black Lava Salt etc. Probably loads I've never heard of either! Grin

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 26/03/2021 00:19

I bought my mil a salt lamp thing - she loves it
That’s as exotic as I get

Ifeelsuchafool · 26/03/2021 00:22

The very first time I stayed in a five star hotel, (can't for the life of me remember the name, it was in Bristol but it's long gone now,) and the bath towels were sooooo gineormous that I could stand on one end and hold the other end with my arms at full stretch over my head! (And I'm not particularly small or anything, 5'8" in fact) We were travelling down to Cornwall from the frozen north for a holiday when our children were very small indeed so needed to break the the journey, but I was the child that night! It felt so decadently luxurious! Grin

RiverSkater · 26/03/2021 00:54

Tinned salmon

Wooden salad bowl and servers.

supperlover · 26/03/2021 02:54

As a child I thought all doctors were posh. I then started my nurse training and mixing with medical students cured me of that illusion!

sashh · 26/03/2021 03:36

I didn't know a fish fork was a thing, I've just googled it and I'm still not sure how its superior to the standard fork for eating fish?

They are not really different, they just match with the fish knives.

Now when it comes to oyster forks - they are different. I don't have any because I don't like shell fish. but they are the only forks that are placed on the right of a place setting.

I think I learned this stuff from my grandma, and I think her gran might have been in service.

Maybe there is some snobby rating of how posh you are by which spoons you have. I bet the actually genuinely posh don't actually use them.

groovergirl · 26/03/2021 03:44

Wholemeal sandwiches wrapped in cling film! In 1970s/80s Australia, genuine wholemeal bread was hard to find and cost twice the price of flabby ol' white sliced.

feralcat19 · 26/03/2021 05:33

@BikeRunSki

Not when it’s a glorified paddling pool!

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 26/03/2021 06:45

Council houses. When I was a child I thought Council houses were posh because the ones near us were semi detached, built round greens. We lived in a Victorian terrace. I didn't understand why buying a terraced house could possibly be better.
