What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

@SittingAround1

Real parmesan cheese. We always had the pre grated shavings in a sprinkle pot.
I notice they still sell this in Tesco. Who buys it?! It was like cheesy vomit dust and a block of Parmesan isn't particularly expensive.

I had a friend at college whos parents used to serve exotic delights such as pesto, I thought pesto was proper posh in the 90s but I guess it was just quite new?

When I was a child Vienetta was very posh and a birthday treat. Now it costs about £1 Grin
I had a school friend who was from a wealthy family so she always seemed posh. I remember being jealous that she had strawberries in her lunchbox which I was never allowed as they were too expensive!
Magnums (ice cream) were posh too then. We were never allowed them or Cornettos from an ice cream van.

I envied my townie friends and thought that their smart,tidy houses were much posher than our old, fairly large farmhouse. Became a townie as an adult and then realised that they probably thought owning a farm and living in a house which had been handed down a couple of generations was quite posh. Those stone flag floors, which I didn't rate at all ( friends had lino or tiles in their kitchens) seem beautiful now. We even had an Aga ( solid fuel) which my mother had installed in 1939 so long before they were posh.

@dcb2 , your post made me laugh out loud waking my 2mo! That poor burglar! Ha

Ifeelsuchafool · 26/03/2021 07:52

When I was a child, orange juice came out of a can as a, "breakfast starter" in down at heel, north eastern, seaside b&bs. Two mouthfuls in a wine glass on a plate. Already on the table getting warm when you arrived in the dining room but I thought it was dead posh! Hmm

TeaAddict235 · 26/03/2021 08:11

@HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee

I’m imagining two balconies Tina as a right gerl. Stacey Slater
Me too. Bet she dated Billy too and they drank snowballs on the church walls.

@DiscoLightsOnAFridayNight

Renault Clios! I desperately wanted to be ‘Nicole’ when I grew up & would start calling my dad ‘Papa’ every time a new ad came out.
OMG yes. French & Italian ads and holidays all seemed posh. I found Italy to be a BIG disappointment - grubby and mucky and not forgetting all the air pollution.

Wearing natural fibres as a teen looked well to do to me. Only recently found out that one friend had been wearing her mum's altered clothes. Looked good though

Drinking Perrier water or Minute Maid juice also struck me as an educated palate. After studying in France I know why bottled water is preferred.

Themadcatparade · 26/03/2021 08:52

This thread is hilarious.

Cappuccinos.

Themadcatparade · 26/03/2021 08:52

I just call them frothy coffees now Grin

JimmyJabs · 26/03/2021 09:22

Coffee full stop! I came from a tea-drinking household, where coffee was something you only had in cafes while out shopping, or after dinner in a nice restaurant. The marketing was always aimed at making it seem all sophisticated and grown-up, whereas tea was advertised by cartoon northerners and chimps 😆

Themadcatparade · 26/03/2021 09:24

@JimmyJabs agree with the marketing thing for coffee.

Changed my mind about British coffee when I went to Sicily and tried how absolutely top notch the espresso was there!! It just tastes like watery crap over here now imo not the smooth, silky stuff on tv adverts

Tea reminds me of Yorkshire farmers

Marcipex · 26/03/2021 09:29

Avon ladies 😆
My friends mother was an Avon lady, and I was totally awestruck by her long blonde hair, blue eyeshadow, and bathroom full of pretty bottles. She was angelically sweet and kind, as well as glamorous.

Chrispackhamspoodle · 26/03/2021 09:35

Capri sun.
Never had one and watched my best mate have one every day in her packed lunch throughout primary school.Mega posh.And she wore Marks and Spencers school uniforms whilst I got my sisters hand me downs from the market.

A rag no one ever thought was posh, presumably.
StartingGrid · 26/03/2021 10:39

Serving hatches seemed so fancy to me!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/03/2021 10:43

I told my partner I'm famous, he said its an amusing thread but not newsworthy. Shall I LTB?

@JimmyJabs this cartoon northerner (or am I a chimp) nearly spat out her tea just now! Grin

Ifeelsuchafool · 26/03/2021 11:18

@longwayoff I never did like Betjeman personally for that very reason. Only got into Oxford because of his background and did everything he could other than actually apply himself to studying to get some sort of degree and failed. He hated his tutor C.S. Lewis, who was infinitely more talented than Betjeman ever was who, in turn, labelled him an "idle prig".

LookAChicken · 26/03/2021 11:19

C.s.Lewis called it right.

Winecurestiredness · 26/03/2021 11:23

I thought M&S was posh until thats where i got my lunch as an inpatient in hospital. Hospital had an M&S Cafe too....very nice...but not posh at all!

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 26/03/2021 11:43

@LivingDeadGirlUK - He clearly is not good enough for you. But make sure you get your ducks in a row first.
