What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

Having a mum with a title but not being posh enough to marry someone with 1000 acres. Very Jane Austen and didn't make sense at the time. I had the last laugh. I have been married 33 years and he has just had his third expensive divorce.

I can’t believe no one has brought up the most poshest thing of all.....

Stone Cladding

Oh how I sighed for it.

After eight mints.

Going on a train.

Cafe rouge - though it does still feel a bit posh to me tbh

Bidets were the height of poshness when I was growing up. Always dreamed of having one. In reality, the only bidets I’ve seen in real bathrooms are avocado green with chipped, lime scale covered taps Confused

VaVaGloom · 25/03/2021 17:49

Ensuites and bidets

Whatisupwithme · 25/03/2021 17:54

Me and Dsiss always go 'ooh kitchen roll' if ever we see the other has it. As none of us have been able to keep ourselves in the style to which we had become accustomed and all agreed that kitchen roll was an unnecessary luxury.

@JimmyJabs

London was posh to me. All of it, without exception 😆. I had a friend whose aunt lived there and she was always going on about her visits to stay with her, when they would go on visits to Tower and Madame Tussaud's. I found out much later that this aunt actually lived in Leighton Buzzard, so not posh and not even London. She'd just talked it up to make people think she was holidaying in a delightful little pied a terre in Belgravia or something.
Leighton Buzzard hat is pushing greater London Grin

London did sound posh when growing up in a small town, it had Harrods & palaces with royalty after all!

LipstickLou · 25/03/2021 17:56

Not ensuites!

en0la · 25/03/2021 17:57

Waitrose.

Haydugee · 25/03/2021 18:04

As a DC I used to think Wimpy was posh.

It was a rare and wonderful treat to go there.

Claudia84 · 25/03/2021 18:04

Skiing holidays are still posh aren’t they?!

Cafe Rouge 😂 Yes a few years ago me and my sis thought we had found an exclusive little bistro in Surrey.......🤣 then we found out it was a chain but the food was good.

My daughter thought it was like John Lewis the way I talked about it . She spent her dinner hour queuing up for a high voucher for me for my birthday and was so shocked that it was the opposite to John Lewis :)

they really aren't.

Some resorts ARE posh (or at least extremely expensive), but skiing in itself isn't.

Mini Mars Bars in my friend’s parents’ biscuit tin!
I was about 10 and was gobsmacked.
In the days when you had 2 1/2 pocket money every week. No chocolate or crisps in the house.
We were a relatively well off family, but the norm had changed. This was the 1970s; no wonder hardly anyone was overweight.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 25/03/2021 18:10

Nearly all stuff from Daylesford Organic. Except their chocolate brownies, they're fab but come in at £2.99 each!

HibouMilou · 25/03/2021 18:10

I mistyped: 2 1/2p pocket money

JimmyJabs · 25/03/2021 18:11

@VaVaGloom I grew up in rural North Yorkshire and didn't even go to London until I was a teenager. I knew from seeing it on the telly that it wasn't all palaces and huge townhouses, but somehow it seemed to be not for the likes of me 😆.

This thread is a great example of why I wish there was a 'like' button for individual messages!! So many of them, I'm chuckling and nodding!

LowlandLucky · 25/03/2021 18:20

A boyfriend thought we were posh because we used jam spoons and used a salt spoon and dish.

Claudia84 · 25/03/2021 18:21

I’d still think you were posh with a salt spoon! I had to look that up
