What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

Fish forks? Oh God, another failure. Never seen or heard of such a thing.

AgeLikeWine · 25/03/2021 13:37

Fish knives are not posh. They are a pointless waste of time and metal.

Steak knives are not posh. They are an essential bit of kit. We have a set of superb, lethally sharp French Laguiole steak knives, and I wouldn’t be without them.

Dreamponytail · 25/03/2021 13:42

YY to the professional job parents being posh.

Earl Grey tea was very posh. You can get it easily now obvs, along with all sorts of other teas but it wasn't as available back then.

Someone said a toaster- agree with that. We used the over-oven grill (70s thing with a pull-out tray above the hob bit on a standalone oven) and then when we moved to a house with no over-oven grill we never had anything toasted for years, except if you wanted to put the grill on the oven (as in, in the oven itself) which was OTT for just toast and discouraged as being too expensive to put the oven grill on for by my parents. Oven shelves and grill pan usually needed a good clean anyway so you didn't want to put bread on it.

Sometimes I really wonder what they were thinking. My kids have toast (and toasted crumpets and bagels and so on) from the toaster all the time, it's so handy.

Dreamponytail · 25/03/2021 13:44

Also, a specific brush thing to do the washing up with. We had the one same kitchen cloth (actually it was a cheap sponge) for wiping surfaces and washing up and it wasn't bleached or washed as far as I recall [boak] it just got thrown out when it was too manky!

Anystarinthesky · 25/03/2021 13:44

Only at Christmas, 'Twiglets' were served and the adults drank 'Snowballs' (Advocaat and lemonade).

Spillanelle · 25/03/2021 13:45

Cruises. I remember my grandparents going on a cruise when I was about 15 and thinking how they had really joined the elites now.

Dreamponytail · 25/03/2021 13:52

Age Steak knives are not posh in themselves but only if you eat steak regularly enough to justify them! But steak is expensive by comparison to other meats and was even more so "back in the day".

It's like saying tyres for your Roller are not posh, they're an essential bit of kit. Tyres are not posh but the Roller is!

FizzyPink · 25/03/2021 13:52

It’s funny because growing up I probably was quite posh. I went to private school, had ballet, violin, piano and singing lessons.
But I couldn’t possibly believe we were well off as we didn’t have Sky TV. As a child I believed that to be the holy grail of richness and couldn’t believe the number of channels some of friends had the choice of.

As an adult, I now realise why my parents didn’t prioritise paying for Sky 😂

BedisBliss · 25/03/2021 13:55

@giao

My friend was posh when I was a child, a very long time ago. She had a Sunday best coat, a fridge and a box of tissues. I was awestruck.

It was many, many years before I stopped thinking that tissues were posh.

Completely identify with this - posh kids had tissues and I had a wad of loo roll in my pocket!

I grew up in west Texas.
In my world, there's plenty of land so most houses are single story/ "ranch" homes.
Two story houses were rare and I used to dream of one day living in one.

Adding to that upbringing, my father was from Mexico (as were all four of my grandparents) and many people we knew were from Latin America and it wasn't a big deal to me to travel there.

However, I thought it was very posh to travel to Europe and my family used to think all people from Europe were rich. I remember that a local department store sold Belgian Godiva chocolate bars and I saved all my pocket money to buy one as it cost $2.50. The minimum wage was $3.25/hour then so it was expensive!

You can only imagine that I hit the jackpot, according to my sister, because I traveled to England, married an Englishman and lived in a two-story house in England. He was brought up in a council estate near Wigan but it's still very posh according to my sister.

Now, I want a single-story house and vacations to Mexico City and Acapulco like I did as a child. Those Godiva chocolates are still $2.50 though.

A peach coloured sunken bath is the height of ‘poshness’ in my opinion! My friend had one and I longed to have soak in it when I went around after school for tea.

beguilingeyes · 25/03/2021 14:50

@mrurddhasabitpart

Bloody expensive wilkos! I'd not say the Range posh but not wilkos level.
Oh god...The Ivy used to be wonderful. I sat opposite Stephen Spielberg the first time I went there..he was having dinner with Sam Mendes.

The did a big revamp a couple of years ago and I hate it now. They've put the bar..which use to be in a separate room, right in the middle of the restaurant. It's horrible. Always loved the food though.

beguilingeyes · 25/03/2021 14:52

@Decorhate

The original Ivy restaurant in London. Went once for a special occasion- I’ve had far better meals elsewhere & the service was impersonal

BluntlySpoken · 25/03/2021 14:52

The area I moved to. Lol
Only moved as closer to family and got a good deal from landlord.
Since joining the local FB page. I realise it's not as posh as people make out it is. Just how I like it haha.

Usagi12 · 25/03/2021 14:58

Vienetta ice cream 😂 we only ever had it at Christmas so I thought it was really posh and expensive!

Usagi12 · 25/03/2021 15:03

Another one, little pots of petis filou, my mum would never buy them as they were too expensive and I thought they were dead posh. I really wanted them 😂😂 now I have them all the time ☺️

OpusAnglicanum · 25/03/2021 15:46

@Weepingwillows12

Its not quite the same but growing up I always linked Nottingham with Robin Hood so I expected a historic town centre surrounded by trees full of beautiful old buildings more like York or possibly Newcastle. I expected a lot basically. It's a nice enough city but not at all Robin Hood ish.
@Weepingwillows12

It used to be nice! Was actually described as one of the most beautiful towns in England in the 17th century. Post WW2 planners’ (demolishers) have a lot to answer for.

miimblemomble · 25/03/2021 16:20

Having the same carpet throughout your house, like in every room. Most people I knew had random bits in different rooms, but one friend had the same, brand new green carpet thought and I thought it was dead posh,

Turned out her dad owned a hotel and got a special deal when he refurbished some bedrooms, the carpet fitters just did their house as well.

Her mum also had loads of Royal Doulton figurines which I coveted.

Dasher789 · 25/03/2021 16:22

Ribena!!

Cowbells · 25/03/2021 16:34

@DoggyDoolittle

Going to the races / Ladies Day
Oh, I still think Ladies Day is posh. Is it not? I see women dressed to the nines at Waterloo when I'm schlepping to work and they are all standing in clusters of pastel dresses and vast hats looking like the hardest thing they;ve ever done is choose a nail colour.
AlfonsoTheTerrible · 25/03/2021 16:47

Long-haul foreign holidays. I was at school with a girl whose parents used to take her and her brother to New York for a long weekend to see the ballet or to Kenya for a safari over Christmas.

My family had a country house, so weekends, holidays and summers were spent there. I would have much rather travelled.

I know: First World Childhood Problem.

PeacheyPeach · 25/03/2021 17:05

Roll top baths
Dado rails 😂
Microwave meals ( we didn't even own a microwave!)
Limos -
A globe with drinks inside
Sun loungers ( we only ever had deck chairs!!)

LadyVi · 25/03/2021 17:22

Horses!
In fact anything to do with riding horses/owning horses. I used to think they were all posh people sports but having now met lots of them, most are now dirt poor because all of their cash goes on the horse and travelling to shows etc.

SingleHandSue · 25/03/2021 17:22

Me and DH were quite young when we met and still living at home.

I thought his family were posh because they had wine in an evening, he thought me and my parents were posh because we used a knife and fork properly Grin

Hmm1234 · 25/03/2021 17:25
