What have you thought was posh, only to find out its not?

I have never been to The Range, I always thought it was a posh garden center. My partner has laughed at me and said its basically a Wilkos with plants. I still think that sounds pretty cool though!

Has anyone else expected something to be posh, only to have their hopes and dreams dashed?

I thought cake forks were called pastry forks. Confused

Ifeelsuchafool · 25/03/2021 18:24

Formal snacks and food restraint Had what I thought was a very posh auntie, (well she was mother's sister but her DH was posh so we thought) She would lay a tea tray complete with napkin, tea or coffee pot, milk jug and plate for coffee and biscuit mid morning, or tea and cake in the afternoon! Only had coffee once a day during the morning and tea on the dot of 1600hrs. If you ave her a box of chocolates she'd cry, "oh my waistline!" and have just one, in the evening with her post dinner coffee until they were gone. But shecwas such a sweet lady and never looked askance when she visited us and we grabbed chunks of cake on the run!

Belgium. I had a school friend with a Belgian mother and they went there every summer, while we camped in Devon.

Hobbesmanc · 25/03/2021 18:29

Kettle Chips- my heart sinks when they get brought out at parties and pre dinner. Nasty over- crunchy and greasy. Walkers are miles better

Harleyband · 25/03/2021 18:30

Ribena- especially hot Ribena at night.

Indoor shoes- we wore socks or slippers

Private schools- I thought only the very posh went but now I send my DCs to one and know that while there are some very rich, very posh families most are like us scraping together the money for the fees and living very ordinary lives

Whenigrowupiwanttobea · 25/03/2021 18:31

Black Forest Gateau!
Club biscuits.

Gladimnotcampinginthisweather · 25/03/2021 18:33

Harleyband I always thought that about private/public schools, but my neighbour who works at our nearest public school assures me that they have parents from all backgrounds.

Lindyhoppity · 25/03/2021 18:34

As a kid....sodastreams, Disney Holidays & kids dads who drove BMW’s.....Grin however this was the 80’s....

Waste paper baskets/bins

My granny was always posh to me. Her house had sugar cubes in a silverware pot, and she had a very ornate dressing table with her potions and lotions on which I loved, plus very posh built-in wardrobes! She would make us meringues which was such a treat, serve vienetta icecream for dessert, and let my brother and I have a whole bag of pick n mix sweets to ourselves when we went out shopping! My grandad had his own office with mahogany furniture, which seemed very grand to me. My grandparents had a beautiful garden with huge rose beds and a rose arch in, as well as a stone birdbath which I thought was exceedingly posh - they would regularly hold garden and dinner parties too. I remember going around trying to swing the remainders of G&T (So POSH) from glasses left lying around!
In their car (a cream Rover - again I thought posh in those days Grin) my granny kept a spare pair of driving shoes (!) and my grandad always had a packet of wethers originals in the glove compartment! I remember thinking my grandparents were the height of poshness and loved staying at their house (which was called a name not a number like ours!) and used to tease my granny for being like Hyacinth Bouquet!

Mitzimccormack · 25/03/2021 18:35

Viennetta ice cream dessert. My mum always served it in high days and holidays. En suite bathrooms.

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 25/03/2021 18:36

Wine Spritzer.

DesertSky · 25/03/2021 18:36

*swig the remainders

TheYearOfSmallThings · 25/03/2021 18:39

I still think Volvos are posh.

And there is a part of me that still thinks ferrero rocher are fancy.

wishes1111 · 25/03/2021 18:40

After Eights as we only had them at Christmas, limos, J20s.

caspersmagicaljourney · 25/03/2021 18:40

Champagne. Totally overrated and tastes gross🥴

Georgyporky · 25/03/2021 18:42

Being called by your full forename - e.g. Florence rather than Flo.

Silkies · 25/03/2021 18:43

Shloer was always posh growing up and reserved for Christmas and birthdays.

My Mum used to say McDonalds was posh when it first opened by us but that quickly got dismissed as every time you went past there was litter everywhere. She still insisted if you made a special request like no onions it was posh.

HippyChickMama · 25/03/2021 18:45

Those ice creams in a wafer oyster shell with chocolate sauce and nuts. DM used to have that from the ice cream man while we weren't allowed and had to have a lolly, a 99 or a screwball. I now realise it was because we'd have made a right mess eating it but at the time believed them to be grown up and posh.

TartanDMs · 25/03/2021 18:46

There's a really long road in the city I live in, where all the really big expensive houses are. As a child I aspired to own one of them - then as I got older and got married, DH was a postman in that area and the driveways were on average a quarter of a mile long, so I have decided that if I do live there I need to be able to drive, as the road is so far away from anywhere else including the neighbours. I have always said if I win the lottery, I will buy one of them. There is one with an awesome green roof that I have always coveted.

tryinghardnottocry · 25/03/2021 18:49

Brown eggs, when I was young in the 1960's you had to pay more for them than the white ones

VaVaGloom · 25/03/2021 18:51

In the 1990s as a tween/teen I remember thinking clothing from The Sweater Shop was the height of sophistication.

Next.

tryinghardnottocry · 25/03/2021 18:52

Two staircases !

Silkies · 25/03/2021 18:54

I was the opposite with eggs - we always had the brown ones as children and then once we went abroad and they had white eggs and they seem very exclusive and fancy. Smile

starfishmummy · 25/03/2021 18:55

@ThePontiacBandit

When we started going out, DH thought I was posh because I had cake forks! Grin

I always thought Ferrero Rocher were really posh...not sure why. Certainly not something we had at home growing up. Didn’t they weren’t until my 20s!

I have my late Mum's cake forks. I don't use them, bit they're more because I remember her wanting them and having to wait years until she got them!!
