What song has a sad memory?

Just heard Killing Me Softly, which I sat at a Christmas party listening to after being dumped by guy I thought was the love of my life he wasn't. Over 20 years ago but still makes me wince inside with pain.

You?

Are you watching University Challenge?!

Bloodybridget · 22/03/2021 20:53

Sorry it brought up a sad memory for you!

en0la · 22/03/2021 20:54

Dancing with tears in my eyes by ultravox

Symphony by clean bandit was playing in the car on the way to a private scan I had that confirmed a mmc. More poignant because of the lyrics about the heartbeat... I instantly burst into tears every time I hear it even now years later. This did happen to me in home bargains which was embarrassing! But it’s like a knee jerk reaction!

@Bloodybridget

Sorry it brought up a sad memory for you!

It was a long long time ago and it wasn't the Roberta Flack version, but it whooshed me right back

Thinking of the Days by Kirsty McColl played at my friends memorial service, she died when she was 18 and it was the first time I had had to deal with the death of a peer rather than an elderly relative.

I don't really have sad associations with songs, but A Case of You reminds me of an ex-girlfriend with whom I had a very passionate but intrinsically doomed relationship! We are good friends now so it's not sad.

'The Winner Takes It All' in 'Mamma Mia'.
Now XH wouldn't leave for three months and we tried to carry on pretending in the meantime (long story and not for here).
We took the dcs to see it at the cinema.
I sobbed my heart out.
It still catches me unawares, even over ten years later, and takes me straight back to how I felt.

Dance with my Father. By Luther Vandross I think. Always has me chocked with tears. Woman by John Lennon is another.

peakygal · 22/03/2021 21:03

Bobby Goldsboro Honey. No matter what mood I'm in it makes me cry every time

itwa · 22/03/2021 21:04

For me it was Leave a light on by Tom Walker, as my ds had had some issues with drugs and I couldn't and still can't listen to it, without crying

Paddy1234 · 22/03/2021 21:07

Borderline by Chris de burgh

LoungeLizardLhama · 22/03/2021 21:11

The drugs don’t work by The Verve. This song was in the charts and was playing on the radio when I got the call to say that my very good friend had just been pronounced brain dead after suffering a massive asthma attack a few days earlier. Just gut wrenching.

MrsTreglowan · 22/03/2021 21:15

Caledonia by anybody really, my Father loved the song but he died suddenly and we sang it at his funeral and now when I hear the words to the song I'm a soggy mess.
The line
" Let me tell you that I love you and I think about you all the time''
just gets to me.
I do realise what the song is about it's just the words that get to me

Modwolvesrock · 22/03/2021 21:19

Brown eyed girl
Reminds me of my miniature dachshund, the best friend I ever had. I still miss her and dream about her.

CandleWick4 · 22/03/2021 21:20

My love is your love by Whitney Houston. A few days after my Nan died we were taking a trip to see some family and this song came on in the car and I cried and cried and now I can’t listen to it anymore

Floralnomad · 22/03/2021 21:22

I’ve a few but notably Forever Autumn as it was one of my late dads favourites and REMs everybody hurts which is known as the dead animal song in our family .

rubbered · 22/03/2021 21:26

The last of the summer wine theme tune which was played at my Dads funeral, also had a hymn which is the hocks advert tune but it's called going home, very fitting.

Strokethefurrywall · 22/03/2021 21:28

Sweet Child Of Mine - Guns N Roses
Don't you worry bout a thing - Stevie Wonder

Played at my brothers funeral.

Fix You - Coldplay. When my brother was diagnosed I couldn't listen to it and it still brings back memories I struggle with.

There are so many more but these are the first that spring to mind.

Bohemian Rhapsody - reminds me of a 6th form disco when it was top of the charts - a group of school friends were in a car crash driving home and sadly one was killed.

UnsolicitedDickPic · 22/03/2021 21:45

Wild World, Cat Stevens. It was on a CD that my ex had made for me. Our relationship had broken down, mostly because I was a knob, and I had just moved into a flat on my own. I'd never lived on my own before. I still have trouble listening to it.

darumafan · 22/03/2021 21:49

Adam's Song by Blink 182. The line 'Please tell mom this is not her fault '
It makes me think of my son who died by suicide when he was just 22 years old.

MouseholeCat · 22/03/2021 22:04

The Lark Ascending. Played at the funeral of my friend who passed away from a very aggressive form of cancer in her early 20's. When I hear it my whole body relives how I felt at that moment.
