Low lying placenta

Hi there I got told at 20 week scan I have a low lying placenta. I carried on as normal until around 4 days ago 23+4 I went to the toilet as I felt I was starting a period and bled. I went to hospital was kept in 3 days baby wasn't bothered thank god! But the bleeding has scared the life out of me its made me paranoid and anxious. I was told light pink is ok and any fresh red blood to go to hospital. Has anyone else experienced this did bleeding stop, im constantly going to check in not bleeding and worried to go to the toilet im now 23+6 and terrified as I don't want baby coming yet

I had this with my first. My first bleed was slightly later than where you are now and like you I spent several days in hospital, terrified while baby was just fine.

This looked like they settled and I came home, took some time of work to take things easy but went back after a couple of weeks. Office job so I was still sitting most of the day and in the end felt more comfortable being around people than home on my own.

I did go on to have several more bleeds, each time with a stay in hospital and after the 3rd they said any more and I would need to stay in until the baby arrived. I did have a final bleed and stayed in hospital then till my baby was delivered at 34 weeks.

Baby did need some extra help at first so was in NICU, but there's been no lasting effects for either of us, unless you count a few more grey hairs for me.

Fingers crossed all stays settled for you and your baby stays put for a while yet.

Yes I had this but all ended well. It was also a bleed at 23 weeks. Diagnosed stage 4 placenta previa. Stayed in hospital until the birth which was elective caesarean under GA at 36 weeks. Worrying time but as I said it all turned out fine inthe end.

Sjfxx · 22/03/2021 15:49

Thanks both I was so terrified as she is to young to be here yet luckily all through she was fine and kicking away! I'm just terrified of it coming again. I haven't had any blood even while wiping for 24 hours now so fingers crossed although I know it can happen again it just terrifies me

I had the same, multiple small bleeds and hospital stays until they eventually just kept me in until planned C section. Mine wasn’t until 37 weeks exactly, when they didn’t want to leave it any longer,
and I was awake, so PP doesn’t always mean extra complications. Everything was fine for us. Hope goes as well for you. Sometimes the placenta moves along the way in pregnancy so you will get regular scans to check.

Sjfxx · 22/03/2021 21:31

My bleed wasn't heavy and haven't had any now for 24 hours so I'm hoping it will stop for a while now. I'm just so scared and anxious about it happening again although I know it is possible with my placenta.

Fingers crossed. Yes it may still move out of the way. 2 of my dc I had low lying placenta and they had moved up by 34 week scans. The 3rd was absolutely across the bottom hence the GA caesarean as I bled heavily again at 28 and 32 weeks. But was in the hospital all the way through so felt very safe. They like you to go as long as you can, but were always cross matching for bloods ready if needed. I did have a transfusion at birth. As I said though it was all ok in the end and I have a shiny 20 year old as a result!!

Sjfxx · 23/03/2021 11:26

That's brilliant. They didn't give me meds or anything so im guessing they didn't think thenbleed was a big one im just trying to get over the anxiety of bleeding again.

I had this at about 12 weeks but bright red fresh blood. Luckily DS was fine but no one knew why I bled they said it can just be one of those things.
But honestly every time I went to the toilet I found myself checking the paper through out pregnancy. It's not such a bad thing to have a check, I still do it now it's just a habit!

Glad your baby and you are okay and well.

AuditAngel · 23/03/2021 13:04

I’ve had PP twice, both grade 4 (as bad as it can get)

With DD1 I was 33 weeks, rushed in, kept for 3 days, released then back in within24 hours and stayed in until planned CS at 37.5 weeks, she was 8lb 11oz!

With DD2 I was first admitted at 24 weeks, then 36, three separate admissions in week 31 before finally admitted at 33 weeks until she was born at 36+1 weighing 5lb 13oz and no need for NICU.

AuditAngel · 23/03/2021 13:04

Sorry, that should be 24 weeks then 26

Sjfxx · 23/03/2021 16:44

Im just terrified of bleeding again luckily my bleeding wasn't heavy I didn't have any meds just observed and sent home when it was just pink not fresh. I had a speculum exam and cervix is still closed up thankfully. Did you find anything bought on the bleeding? I've been told to avoid intercourse so im hoping with pelvic rest I won't bleed again as its making me so anxious

OP posts:
jacqelinedaniels · 23/03/2021 18:02

Yes we were told to avoid sex! It was that brought on the first bleed. And then lifting, and then increasingly anything very much. Had to leave work much earlier than planned.

Sjfxx · 23/03/2021 18:57

Im just trying all I can to not aggravate it and bring on a bleed im just soso scared although I know I can't stop it im just hoping with pelvic rest it keeps the bleeding away

Sjfxx · 23/03/2021 18:57

Im just terrified to go to the toilet incase I see blood I know it can happen with low lying placenta im just so scared

jacqelinedaniels · 23/03/2021 20:25

Please don’t panic, that won’t help you or baby. Just take things as easy as you can and try not to worry (easier said than done, I know). They are so good at looking after this complication, they will keep a really close eye on you all the way along. Bleeds can have a long gap between them with this, and as said by many the placenta often moves xx

Sunshinegirl82 · 23/03/2021 20:40

I had two biggish bleeds at 20 and 21 weeks with DS1, kept in hospital both times until it settled. It was incredibly stressful at the time but my placenta moved up and I didn't have any further bleeds.

I was signed off work for 8 weeks and pretty much just rested on the sofa and watched Netflix!

I found I started to relax more once I got past 28 weeks and then again once I got past 32 weeks. DS1 was born safe and well at term and is now a very happy, healthy 4 year old!

I really understand the worry, I really do. Take it one day at a time, best of luck.

PlantingGreen · 23/03/2021 20:56

I had a biggish bleed at 18 weeks. Felt like i was starting to have a wee in bed. Ran to toilet and when i wiped there was a lot of blood. Hadn't realised that id dripped on the carpet on the way to the toilet. Got kept in overnight and never had another. I was so worried about having another. Found out i had a low lying placenta at 20 weeks but it moved by my 32 week scan. DS is 4 months tomorrow and doing great

Sjfxx · 23/03/2021 21:16

My first bleed came when I was on tje toilet then I seemed to just have blood when I wiped its just hard not knowing what causes the bleeds so it can be avoided

OP posts:
Sjfxx · 23/03/2021 21:17

Luckily it wasn't that heavy and after the first few hours was mainly when I wiped then it turned to pink on wiping im hoping that I won't get another further heavy bleed its terrifying

OP posts:
Sjfxx · 23/03/2021 21:18

Did you notice anything that bought on the bleed? Intercourse or lifting?

OP posts:
Snuzzle · 23/03/2021 22:08

I had the same, my first bleed was at 17 weeks and then on and off until 24 weeks. Was admitted and put on bed rest at 20 weeks but it never seemed to bother the baby. It then all cleared up until I had another bleed at 31 weeks.
Ended up being given steroids and kept in hospital again but didn’t have any more complications and had a planned c section at 38 weeks.
It was terrifying especially the first bleed because I’d had a previous miscarriage but midwives were lovely and DD is a very healthy 6 year old.

Sjfxx · 23/03/2021 23:07

Where your on and off bleeds heavy or mainly spotting? I can deal with spotting but with all I read it says can be very heavy thats what terrifies me I haven't had any spotting now for 48 hours so fingers crossed

OP posts:
Snuzzle · 24/03/2021 06:22

Each of mine were a single gush of blood then a couple of days of spotting. The first couple terrified me but I could always feel her moving and kicking which helped reassure me and I had regular scans and checks at the hospital. The midwives were wonderful and told me I could go in to be monitored any time I wanted as well.

user1493413286 · 24/03/2021 06:29

I had bleeds with a low lying placenta and I completely understand the dread of going to the toilet in case it’s happened again. My first bleed happened when I hadn’t had sex for at least a few days and I hadnt done anything strenuous for a good few days, there was nothing I could think of that triggered it. I went to the gym until my first bleed doing recommended exercises but I hadn’t been in at least 5 days beforey first bleed. I quizzed the doctors about whether it could have been work stress or that I’d recently done a long drive and they said these things can just happen.
I was told I could carry on with normal life (apart from sex) but I did take it fairly easy afterwards.
The main bit of reassurance I had was that the bleeds don’t really bother the baby

starfish88 · 24/03/2021 09:06

I had the same, huge bleed at 24 weeks and stayed in hospital overnight. I was then put on bed rest for several weeks with increasing activity as I got closer to my due date. I was lucky in that the placenta moved up as I grew so I was able to increase my activity towards the birth and I had a vaginal birth although I was induced at 37 weeks for other issues unrelated to the placenta.
