My mum is a dog boarder. She boards and walks for a multimillionaire couple and has worked for them for 8 years. They are very generous and will always pay her more than her listed prices and bring her lovely gifts back from their holidays as a thank you. They are both retired and seem to have complete financial independence, and their house similar to if not worse than this.
She has told me that when she has gone to pick the dog up (the woman often invites mum in for a cup of tea and they are sort of friends now) there is a grand piano literally hanging mid air in the reception area. The kitchen gets painted all sorts of bizarre colours on a whim. There is a shrine for the cockapoo with a hand painted portrait and large sculpture. Lots of leopard and zebra print furniture as well.
I think perhaps when people reach a point where they have financial freedom and independence, they sometimes go a bit eccentric with their houses just to be able to spend their money on something.
