Meh I thought I'd used bodmas and I got 11. Ix7 choc chips, +1 banana + a mystery thing

hedgehogger1 · 20/03/2021 22:47

Oh I see where I went wrong, the weird thing needs to be clearer

This was great fun reading OP. Would be even funnier as the evening goes on and glasses get emptied. I'm watching.

And enjoying my star.

Bodmas!

SandAndSea · 21/03/2021 06:47

I haven't rtft.

SandAndSea · 21/03/2021 06:51

I'm changing my answer to 11. (I haven't got my glasses on.)

I discussed BODMAS upthread without giving my answer, it's 10

10. Look at the cookies more carefully
YetAnotherSpartacus · 21/03/2021 08:25

Yeah, it was the raisins on the biscuits and the hands of the clock that had me stuffed. I also didn't pick up on BODMAS, but then I have always thought that this was a bit wooly as a concept...

What the hell. I'm a social scientist and a qualitative researcher.

It's a simple set of rules for unambiguous arithmetic which have existed for centuries. What's woolly about it?

The bit where it does not say

Times 1 and 7, then add together 2 and 1 and add both totals together. Instead, you have to look at every single frigging equation and find the hidden trick.

But then, the only way I can do maths is to write it out in full sentences with proper words.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/03/2021 09:08

There's no 'trick', it's a really simple and consistent rule.

But then, the only way I can do maths is to write it out in full sentences with proper words.

Some people's brains really do work differently from others, I guess!

To be fair, Errol, while there's no trick with the arithmetic operations, you do have to guess that the question-setter wants you to assume that a 7-chip cookie is worth 7 (7 what? pence? we're not given any units) because a ten-chip cookie is worth 10, and that a clock that says n o'clock is worth n - even though neither of those things seem to be true in the real world!
RaelImperialAerosolKid · 21/03/2021 09:19

Just to complicate things further there is a move away from teaching BIDMAS because division and multiply have equal precedence, as does addition and subtraction- I teach it as order of operations.

Also how do we know that that bananas together are 2b and not b^2 - they are joined so that would imply a product rule?

Love a good maths argument.
