Bit scared by What's App message I received

It's from a number I don't know, profile pic I don't recognise of just a man's face and says

"Thanks you for a card"

Then a message with the mobile number that has sent the message.

I blocked the number and didn't think much of it earlier as busy but since had a missed call from the number, (I didn't realise) and then picked up a call just now as expecting an important call which could have come from a mobile number. There was a delay and then the voice said "hello" and I realised which number it was so hung up and blocked.

It definitely feels like something dodgy and not just mistaken identity, I'm used to the odd spam call or text and don't think anything of it but this one has really weirded me out for some reason - has anyone had the same?

Meant I blocked the number on what's app, then he called my actual phone

999 Now.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 17/03/2021 15:57

Just sounds like a wrong number to me 🤷
I would just ignore.

FlyingBurrito · 17/03/2021 15:57

A wrong number?

What about this is unnerving you?

CherieBabySpliffUp · 17/03/2021 15:57

@ChonkyChook

999 Now.
Why??
GlubGlubGlub · 17/03/2021 15:57

I think 999 is probably a bit of an over reaction!

Just block the number.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 17/03/2021 15:58

999 Now

You’re joking, right?!

Just sounds like a wrong number.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 17/03/2021 15:58

I would call 101 and ask for advice on this. Sorry OP, horrible having unsolicited contact like this I know it's really unnerving Thanks

wendywoopywoo222 · 17/03/2021 15:58

Yes I've had messages and calls from people I don't know. A quick conversation has always confirmed they have the wrong number.

Not sure what has freaked you out.

Lanique · 17/03/2021 15:58

999 🤣

Jeez, some people.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 17/03/2021 15:58

Definitely not 999 as that's an emergency number and this is not one!

SunsetOnTheHorizon · 17/03/2021 15:59

Wrong number. Now back to the day job.

Whatsappmessage · 17/03/2021 15:59

It's not a wrong number, the picture and voice unnerved me a bit although I can't explain why

999 Now.

I’m guessing you’re being sarcastic....

OP, there’s a scam doing the rounds where you receive a phone call with no-one at the other end. Often the number will just ring and hang up before you answer and you then think it’s a missed call and dial the number back. And then you are put through to a premium rate number which costs you £££.

Don’t worry about it. Number is blocked, just forget about it.

SnoozyBoozy · 17/03/2021 16:00

@Lanique

999 🤣

Jeez, some people.

I assumed that was a joke?! I would hope so anyway...

You've blocked the number op, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

FoonySpucker · 17/03/2021 16:00

@ChonkyChook

Get a fucking grip.

nimbuscloud · 17/03/2021 16:00

I think the 999 comment was a joke.
I sometimes get numbers wrong and message or call. It’s not a big deal

Whatsappmessage · 17/03/2021 16:00

I think the 999 one was a tongue in cheek nod to the typical mumsnet overreaction! I'll take that

JonSnowedUnder · 17/03/2021 16:01

How do you know it's not a wrong number, maybe they think you're someone else?

FlyingBurrito · 17/03/2021 16:01

How do you know it's not a wrong number?
Whatsappmessage · 17/03/2021 16:02

Sorry, you're right, I don't know. It just doesn't seem like a wrong number, compared to times I have had messages or calls that were wrong number!

OP posts:
Feraltomcat · 17/03/2021 16:03

I don't understand why you're saying it's not a wrong number?

vampirethriller · 17/03/2021 16:03

Someone has got the wrong number. They think you're someone else. They probably realised when they rang and you weren't who they expected.

Swordfish1 · 17/03/2021 16:03

Perhaps he simply typed a number in his phone wrong and thinks he is messaging someone else to thank for the card?

I'd have just messaged back. 'Sorry I don't know you, I think you have the wrong number.'
Job done

Feraltomcat · 17/03/2021 16:04

Sorry cross posted. It sounds exactly like a wrong number to me. You've blocked them now tho so I'd just forget about it.
