Recommendation for restaurants in York

After Nicola Sturgeons announcement today its looking like we'll definitely get away for a belated mini-moon/1st anniversary trip to York.

Our anniversary falls on a Sunday but we'd love to go somewhere a bit special. Nothing too fancy as my husband isn't into that but you know, something a bit nicer than your average restaurant.
We love Thai, Indian, Greek, Middle Eastern. Anything really although would say Italian is our least favourite. And im vegetarian.

Would love some recommendations that I can look into and see if we can get somewhere booked. Finally something to look forward to!!

My favourite is Cafe Concerto. Near the Minster. I hope it is still there when all of this is over as I want to go back. The food is lovely, and the the atmosphere is wonderful.

To clarify, it's not a glamorous smart-clothes place, but I feel like I'm cocooned in warmth from the minute I walk through the door. I've often worked in York so tend to be eating alone, and it's a happy space for me.

Ambiente tapas

StandardLampski · 16/03/2021 20:18

Does the Evil Eye lounge still exist?

teddybearsbear · 16/03/2021 20:20

The Star Inn the City is great especially if the weather is good and you can sit out. It's right on the river. Have a look at the website to see the terrace area

otterbaby · 16/03/2021 20:28

Rustique is very good. The one on Lendal, near the Minster. We had our small wedding party there!

And yes, Evil Eye Lounge is still open! Great for cocktails, although a bit student-y and gritty.

Also recommend Cave du Cochon, lovely little wine bar with cheese/charcuterie.

Sorry to tell you @LadyofMisrule , cafe conc is no more......

lojojomo · 16/03/2021 21:00

The Rattle Owl - friendly, unpretentious, very good cooking.

fizzybootlace · 16/03/2021 21:08

It was a couple of years ago but Meltons was lovely!

inevitablytired · 16/03/2021 21:21

Was a student in York a few years ago and went back last summer so know of a couple that are hopefully still around! Source is great for nicer quality food with good vegetarian options. I second ambiente tapas, some great options for everyone.

Low Moros on grape lane, absolutely delicious.

Baboutheocelot · 16/03/2021 21:23

*Los Moros that should have said.

Plump82 · 16/03/2021 21:25

Im looking forward to looking up all these places. Does anyone like to plan their holidays round where they will be eating! Outdoor seating would actually be lovely. We're visiting in July, so fingers crossed the weather is good.

The Star Inn the City, owned by Michelin award holder Andy Pern. I know him personally but he’s an amazing chef.

OP, agree with the Los Moros suggestion. Other good ones are: Ambiente Tapas (Goodramgate), Melton's, Melton's Too, Rattle Owl, Skosh, Roots, Cafe Number 8 (Gillygate).

I would decidedly not recommend the Star Inn the City, sadly - though the outside area is lovely for a drink, and they do good chips.

Lunch places: Mannions and The Larder Club (next door to one another). Mannions always has a queue, but is worth it - also has a nice outdoor seating area.

Drake's fish and chips are good.

RIP Cafe Concerto...

I love Star Inn the City. Some of the best meals I have every had there. Been good everytime I have been as well.

WhipMaWhopMa · 16/03/2021 21:48

Oh, how funny that people can have such different experiences! I've been there 5 or 6 times for various reasons (always to do with other people wanting to try it out), and have been very disappointed every time. Though I may just have struck unlucky - the last thing I'd want to do at the moment is kick any restaurant while it's down, as they all are in York at the moment, thanks to lockdown.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 17/03/2021 03:30

@WhipMaWhopMa that has been my experience too, sadly. The staff always act as though they are doing you a favour!

Plump82 · 17/03/2021 08:22

I had a quick nosey at the Star Inn the City and wasn't keen on the veggie options but it looks like a lovely setting so might try there for breakfast.

NotMaryWhitehouse · 18/03/2021 06:41

@purpleme12 yes, but it's not what it was.

PurpleFlower1983 · 18/03/2021 07:21

Another vote for The Rattle Owl for great food.
