What's your favourite salad?

ElizaLaLa · 16/03/2021 16:42

I'm on salads atm as I'm trying to lose weight and am looking for some inspiration.

My favourite salad is mixed leaves, cucumber, tomato, red onion, avocado & coriander, or greek salad with feta and olives.

For the last few days I've been having romaine lettuce, komato cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, radishes, gherkins, and green chillies with tuna/sweetcorn/mayo or omelette.

I do love a salad but they can get very samey.

The Avoca brocolli, hazelnut, feta and tomato salad. Delicious.

AgnesNaismith · 16/03/2021 22:50

Peach, mint, Parma ham and mozzarella with mixed leaves and olive oil

Herbs always make salads more tasty - as an alternative to a heavy dressing

Cowbells · 16/03/2021 22:53

@PrintempsAhoy - I like the sound of your version with grapefruit and feta

My ultimate is a chicken Caesar, but that’s because I like all the higher calorie elements of it.
I also love anything with a ton of blue cheese dressing on - again very calorific Grin

If I’m going lower calorie I like nicoise without the potatoes - so tuna, boiled eggs, green beans etc

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/03/2021 22:56

If I do nicoise I use a fresh tuna steak to top it.
I do like tinned tuna, but I usually use that in a pasta salad with beans of some sort and radishes, sometimes beetroot or fennel, and mustard in the dressing.

@SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius

Tricolore salad - avocado, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes and lots and lots of fresh basil, with a balsamic vinegar, sesame oil and whole grain mustard vinaigrette.
That sounds delicious, I'm definitely going to try this one.

Waldorf salad

Chickpea salad - red pepper, cucumber, avocado, red onion, parsley (can also add other veg eg tomato, radish, celery). Feta and chickpeas

LemonSwan · 16/03/2021 22:59

I have one I call secret salad which is spinach and basil - they look the same so its a bit of a suprise IYSWIM.

Another one I named summer salad is a beaut with a bbq style - apple chunks, cheddar chunks, iceberg

I also like cucumber and white wine vinegar

But 9/10 the winner is tomato mozzarella with basil

Fifthtimelucky · 16/03/2021 23:01

My favourite and most frequently made salads are:

  • Grapes, pear, figs, celery, chives and soft blue cheese;
  • coleslaw consisting of carrots, cabbage, spring onions, celery, apple and raisins, with homemade mayonnaise;
  • my version of a Greek salad (tomatoes, cucumber, spring onions, Feta, no olives); and
  • a colourful rice salad made with brown short grain rice, quinoa and/or bulgar wheat, grated carrot, spring onions, edamame beans, yellow pepper, pomegranate seeds and lots of parsley.

I like salad leaves, especially lambs lettuce, on the side.

LemonSwan · 16/03/2021 23:04

And these are also some pretty banging salads...

The spring salad one with edamame is really good and can be made from mostly from freezer if you buy bags or prep.

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 16/03/2021 23:05

Add avocado, sundried tomatoes, quinoa, flaxseeds, pumpkin seed, sunflowers seeds,
OLives, pickled onions, precooked beetroot, crispy onions, bean sprouts, tin of mixed beans, sweetcorn, almonds, peanuts, mozzarella, fry the vine tomatoes they really are tasty

There’s so much

You can make salad dressing from mixing a little olive oil with harissa, pesto, chipotle paste, a yogurt dressing

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 16/03/2021 23:06

Even some warm mushrooms cooked quickly in some garlic butter

Redyoyo · 16/03/2021 23:08

Salad leaves, cucumber, tomato, spring onion, beetroot, feta and walnut, amazing.

Or chiquitos fajita salad, chicken, fried peppers and onion, salad leaves, guacamole, salsa, sour cream and crushed tortilla chips.

The Leon kale and peanut salad.

I am trying to lose weight too and salads are my go to lunch. One slice chicken, chopped up. Iceberg lettuce chopped, small amount. Spinach chopped, sweet red pointed pepper, tomato, cucumber. Then secret ingredient: kimchi. Including some of the juice (it's mainly chilli and ginger and it's amazing). So light in calories but so tasty.

Lawton · 16/03/2021 23:28

Best salad I had was as a substitute due to venue not being able to find me gluten and soya free bread. Iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, rocket, roast chicken breast, fresh mango, cress, cashew nuts and jaleponos.

I could have been super hungry but it was delish.

VaggieMight · 16/03/2021 23:29

The Leon superfood salad is lovely. Google it.

I think the key is the dressing and if you eat meat adding chicken or tuna.

ElizaLaLa · 16/03/2021 23:32

I use to love Pret's crayfish salad. I think they called it a breadless sandwich, but it was salad in a box.

Leon's superfood salad sounds grainy and I very low carb.

Shredded hearts of romaine, slatted pepper, scraped cucumber, some chopped acorn leaves, grass, weevils, button mushrooms, buttons, pan-fried radishes, cat food and some paper clips.

VaggieMight · 16/03/2021 23:37

I use to love Pret's crayfish salad

I loved it too. M&S and Aldi do a similar one.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/03/2021 03:23

Omg Panther
I was almost agreeing but you've left out my favourite, a dressing made from liquid soap.

JingsMahBucket · 17/03/2021 07:18

@ElizaLaLa Pret still has the crayfish salad for sale. If you’re too far away from a Pret, you can look up the ingredients on their site and recreate it at home. This was one tactic I used a couple years ago — making restaurant salads I loved at home. It wasn’t exactly the same but a darn good approximation.

Thanks, I'll have a look, it was the dressing that made it.

Thai beef salad

As a dressing mix some lemon juice with aesofoetida powder and a pinch of salt.

Lessthanaballpark · 17/03/2021 07:32

I bloody love salads. DS made a fennel cucumber and rocket (fennel bulbs and toasted fennel seeds) with a soy lime dressing. Delicious 😋
