The Duchess of Cambridge attends the Sarah Everard vigil

My respect for the Duchess has just shot up. For a Royal, this is pretty bold and brave.

Not forgetting other women - if you attended the vigil tonight, thank you for sticking up for women's rights. Let's hope this is an opportunity for the Met Police to review and change how they treat both offending officers and female victims

The papers bigging up a token 'good woman' does not make then any less misogynistic and complicit in driving an anti-women's rights agenda. Quite the opposite, in fact. So please don't fall for their attempts to sanctify Kate as a cover for their day to day misogyny.

Yes I feel very uncomfortable about this.

daisypond · 14/03/2021 08:39

Why should she have been wearing a mask? I go to Clapham Common every day and don’t wear a mask.

OneFamilyToRuleUsAll · 14/03/2021 08:41

@Sparklingbrook

It's the new MN rules. Every thread about the RF has to feature Meghan and Prince Andrew, even if they are in no way connected to the discussion. Although have we had a mention of Prince Phillip on this thread yet-he usually gets squeezed in somewhere too...
You just did, congrats Wink

@HeadNorth

She had every right to attend the vigil and I have no beef with Kate M as a person. What does stick in my craw is that the papers have her all over the front page fawning over her, when you know if MM was there it would be all about how selfish she was putting other women/security officers at risk, making at all about her, me me me etc.

@lynsey91 no she didn’t need to wear a mask. It is not law to wear masks outdoors. And when she was there it would have been easy to maintain distance. I know that for a fact because I was there 2 hours afterwards.

Roussette · 14/03/2021 08:44

I'm just sad about this.

Kate.. OK you went but you may have been able to do it without any coverage if you had worn a mask. I wish that could've been the case because I'm sure she does care.

And now... she is on the front page of every newspaper. And that to me is sad.
There should be front pages about the Met not allowing RTS to organise a safe, socially distanced vigil with hundreds of female marshals making it safe, when the High Court had ruled that a vigil could go ahead. The Met would not talk to them.

And now all we have is Kate going there, which is PR for the Monarchy rather than what should be talked about. Such a shame.

Sprining · 14/03/2021 08:44

@goodbyestranger

On this issue there was no need to raise any awareness whatsoever. It's so bad it's one of those things which is right up there. Which is why it was a pretty sick idea of her PR team. Kate puts up and shuts up and is about as bad an example for women of the younger generation as it's possible to be. It staggers me that the royal PR guys get it so horribly wrong so much of the time, in the eyes of intelligent folk, but this was in the absolute worst possible taste.
I agree
speakout · 14/03/2021 08:44

Why should she have been wearing a mask? I go to Clapham Common every day and don’t wear a mask.

Because it would have been the perfect way to protect her identity if she had wanted to pay private respects.
No one would have given her a second glance.

Unless of course her intention was to be seen......

beyondtheshoe · 14/03/2021 08:45

@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows

indeed, but how ironic from the poster who started a thread about her! Confused

@beyondtheshoe

HOW is that ironic?! I don't think you know what that word means.

So now it's my fault the focus is on KM and not Sarah 😂😂😂away to fuck

who is making a thread focusing on Kate Middleton? Confused

You'll find I know what ironic means, unlike some people...

Sprining · 14/03/2021 08:45

@c75kp0r

sorry to be a grump, but unless Kate lives in Clapham and it's her daily exercise, isn't she breaking lockdown rules by going?
Maybe she considered it “work” a royal engagement?
burgerjack · 14/03/2021 08:46

I don't think she was wrong to not wear a mask.

and Prince Andrew, even if they are in no way connected to the discussion.

But if we are going to acknowledge violence against women & misogyny you can't really ignore PA in the context of the Royals can you?

Kimye4eva · 14/03/2021 08:49

Same as everyone else then.
JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 14/03/2021 08:50

who is making a thread focusing on Kate Middleton?

Me. Obviously. But what's your point? There's many threads about Sarah Everard already would you rather i started yet another talking about how terrible it is when there's already dozens like that?

What has this thread got to do with how the papers pick the front page news?

You really don't know what ironic means. There is no irony in a random MNer posting about something which then turns out to end up on the front page. That's just talking about current affairs. What do you actually think irony means?

If you can stop arguing, for just a moment, I would like to wish all mums a happy Mother's Day - including the DoC Flowers

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 14/03/2021 08:50

it is a shame there is such interest in Kate's appearance,
it is great she went, good for her

goodbyestranger · 14/03/2021 08:52

What an insensitive thing to write on a thread where one particular mother has just lost her daughter in the most shocking of circumstances.

OneFamilyToRuleUsAll · 14/03/2021 08:52

you and the likes of you have turned this thread into a focus about Kate Middleton, rather than Sarah

What? C'mon OP, "you and the likes of you" need to stop moving the goal post. This thread is literally about KM. The title literally says what KM did. Posters are literally responding to the thread's topic.

Poor woman's name has only been used as a pawn here to praise and adore KM for attending.

KM, what she did, how marvellous, brave and selfless she is for doing what she did is the WHOLE POINT of your thread. Until some people started disagreeing with you.

Agree
Blessex · 14/03/2021 08:54

@Redact but that’s just not true. The first news sorry BBC and shock horror The Mail is the police reaction.

Perhaps she wanted to be visible but not in the way you’re implying?

She went quietly and paid her respects. It was a nice gesture. She was showing her face because it matters not for her own self-advancement. I find that suggestion quite offensive actually.

Sparklingbrook · 14/03/2021 08:56

He comes up whatever the context. Thread about the Royals? PA gets a mention. I don't personally see a connection between what KM did yesterday (what this thread's about)and whatever her husband's Uncle was /wasn't getting up to twenty years ago.

Blessex · 14/03/2021 08:56

Has anyone actually seen the online news today? It is about the police reaction. If that is not on printed media it is because first editions would have gone already. Am about to put on Andrew Marr. And I bet the big story will be police reaction. I hope it is anyway.

PurpleReigns · 14/03/2021 08:57

Clearly a PR stunt. It’s so clear you can almost see her puppet strings.

Wanting to pay private respects = mask and baseball cap

Being told to attend to give the RF some positive PR after interview = clearly identifiable.

Come on, you can’t be fooling for it surely?!

Krispyk · 14/03/2021 08:58

@Sparklingbrook

This thread really is bonkers but it’s not your fault OP. I think a klaxon went off somewhere.
